This is a very good review. Thank you posting this as I am looking for a proper head for my spotting scope. When I get my spotting scope cranked down to 60x magnification, things get really shaky, especially in the wind.

It is good for video work, but for DSLR stills you may want to look for another model, as this head is designed to be used in the horizontal position, vertical shots are not possible.

Yes you can lock off the head in any position. This is an excellent entry level video head for HDSLR cameras and lighter camcorders. The more professional (and expensive) heads can be balanced so the head will remain in any position without the need to lock off

i got the 502.. its great, with full drag... but im thinking of this 500 for my slider... it looks smaller than the 502, thats the only reason im considering it...BUT the 502 has FAR better drag control, so i might just buy another for the slider. theres only about £30 price difference...hmmm
@DonnieBasss7 жыл бұрын
Do you advice to put IS on or off when filming on this head? Bought it by the way. Just got the prox 2 way but switched it for this one. Altho i like compact i think this one is a little more heavy.

Thank you for the review -- very helpful. Out of curiosity, have you ever used this Manfrotto MVH500AH,755XBK system with a DSLR slider? I have a 47" slider and Sony A7s (approx. 7.7lbs/3.4Kg total) and I'm wondering if this tripod could handle this amount of weight, especially when the slider is at the edges?
@sully35448 жыл бұрын
No, not sturdy enough for even a 24"slider. You need the 502 for that.

Won't tightening the screw for more resistance in panning result in a damaged head in the long run?

Thanks for the review, I'm looking at getting a new head right now so it really helped! But is this head counterbalanced? By that I mean does it return to level by itself when you tilt?

Hello! What is the brand/model of that red ball and socket mount you have there? I'd love to use that with my existing Manfrotto 701HDV head, and column style tripod. Thanks.
@vincentoliver9 жыл бұрын
Chad, this is part of the Manfrotto 755CX3G an carbon fibber set of legs, very good too. For DSLR style cameras the 50mm Ball is sufficient, for heavier camcorders the 75mm ball would be a better option.
@nebilaanimates36912 жыл бұрын
Hi! I have the same model Manfrotto as you but I am having difficulties loosening the ball. It is so stiff and won’t move. Do you have any tips?

hey vincent.....I need a tripod to match my Manfrotto 500 head. I need something beefy/quality....suggestions?
@TheOmid Жыл бұрын
Hi Vincent, What tripod are you using with this head? Im looking for tripod that I could use both for video and photography? any recommendation?
@vincentoliver Жыл бұрын
I was using a Manfrotto tripod, they have an extensive range to suit all price points. I would recommend a carbon fibre option. Avoid cheaper brands which you might find on Amazon or eBay, generally you get what you pay for. If using for video as well as photos then make sure the tripod has a ball and socket head, this will allow for levelling up the tripod head - especially useful for video work when panning.

I'm trying to remove my Manfrotto MVH500AH from my tripod, however, the head keeps rotating no matter I tighten the panning knob. Hence, I can't remove the head. Any idea to solve this problem is welcome. I'm not a handyman, therefore, I don't want to dismantle the head. This head is good enough for my needs.

Hello Sir , Thanks for the video. It is really helpful :) .. Would you recommend this head for canon c100 mark 2 with 24-105 is usm 2 lens ? or i should go for MVH502AH video head ? Looking forward for your feedback ..
@vincentoliver6 жыл бұрын
For the Canon I would personally go for a heavier duty head such as the 504HD PRO VIDEO HEAD. The MVH500 is great for lighter DSLR cameras. A good set of legs is also essential

I am having trouble figuring out how to use my Canon C100 with the Manfrotto MVH500A Fluid Drag Video Head with MVT502AM Tripod. The plate comes with one giant screw but that only holds the plate to the front of the camera, When I put it on the tripod the back of my camera is lose and can slide around. How do I solve this problem?
@vincentoliver7 жыл бұрын
You should have a small nylon pin that came with the plate (see 3:35 in video) this will stop the camera from sliding about.

Thanks for doing this. It does explain how useless it is for DSLRs.
@RedroomStudios9 жыл бұрын
Gary Eason why do you say that? I'm using this head to shoot video for a paid gig with a dslr and it works perfect! if you are referring to the fact that you cant shoot stills in portrait orientation, well then you are simply looking at the wrong type of head in the first place.
@GaryEasonFlightArtworks9 жыл бұрын
RedroomStudios No it was mainly because as you helpfully explained the mounting plate is really for movie cameras. I opted for the XPRO Fluid Head with fluidity selector. Apart from anything else that accepts a standard mounting plate - easily - and it doesn't fall off. The long plate on this one is just inappropriate for a DSLR.
@pj49065 жыл бұрын
I've got the flat head type, however the camera moves very loosely when fixed to plate as the screw mount slides up and down freely, the small pin at the front doesn't really help...any advice on how to fix this?
@vincentoliver5 жыл бұрын
The screw should tighten into the camera body very firmly, I have never had a camera which will not accept the supplied screw to a tight position. However, I also use a quick release plate on my audio recorder together with a Gorilla tripod, I use a rubber washer between the plate and screw hole, this gives extra grip. What camer a re you using and is the plate a Manfrotto plate?
@pj49065 жыл бұрын
Vincent Oliver photo-i Thanks for the response Vincent - the camera fits perfectly on the screw as you mentioned , it’s the fact the camera can slide up and down and rotate freely on the same screw and catches on the pin.... I would have thought the screw should be restricted from moving at all as the fluid head should be what’s controls the movement Ive also had to fit the Manfrotto 293 telephoto lens support bracket which solves the problem and also gives more clearance in the locking nut and additional levelling advantages.... but should work without this addition Hope this makes sense and thanks
@vincentoliver5 жыл бұрын
@@pj4906 The screw should be pulling the camera down on the plate, thereby avoiding and rotation or sliding. I can only think that the screw is not going fully into the camera. I assume that you are using a Manfrotto plate and screw combination? is there any way you can send me an image of the setup? you will find a link to me at photo-i.co.uk

Where do i get a ball and socket head for my flat manfrootto 500?
@vincentoliver7 жыл бұрын
Alexandre Silva not sure what part of the world you live in but do a Google search for a manfrotto dealer. The ball and socket is part of a tripod that is featured in this video, unless you opt for a more pro version, and then you would need a set of legs that can take the unit.0

I assume the last video segment was shot using the head you are reviewing... It is not smooth, it is more like stop-and-go if you watch closely... What was the problem ? Was is a defective head?
@vincentoliver7 жыл бұрын
Not a defective head at all, I think it was the KZfaq render process, it was uploaded 4 years ago, things have improved since then. The head is still very good and smooth.

When you were panning at the end of the video, your image was jumping a little. Typically this happens when you are not using a native lens and the IS is trying to stabilize. Is that what was going on?
@vincentoliver7 жыл бұрын
No I was using the 12-35mm Panasonic lens. Not really sure why there was the stutter, maybe it was due to the final render or shutter speed. But I am sure it wasn't due to the tripod head. I will be doing another video head review with my GH5 so hopefully that will produce a smoother result

Its not just for video, get it evn if you only shoot stills
@vincentoliver2 жыл бұрын
It's not well suited for still photography as you can't put the camera in portrait mode with this or most other video heads.
@fredriksvard26032 жыл бұрын
@@vincentoliver of course you can, put the camera on an L bracket. Have a look at Hudson Henrys reasoning for using fluid heads.
