@@lelagrangeeffectphysics4120 Each of the DMs have some sort of meaningful name. A "leshy" is a Slavic spirit of nature, protecting the forest and its habitants, which obey him. He is generally described as having a humanoid appearance, with hair of moss, and is said to trick traveller to make them lost. Our Leshy is a plant humanoid living in the wood, his cards features animals living the forest, and the setting of his game have the player being lost in a forest. P-03 is called for Nathan Poe (no, not the 19th century writer), an Internet user who created the "Poe's Law", which is "an adage of Internet culture stating that, without a clear indicator of the author's intent, every parody of extreme views can be mistaken by some readers for a sincere expression of the views being parodied." This fit P-03's technological theme, and his trollish personality. There's also a few reference to Internet culture in Golly's fight. Poe's Law was made in 2005, and the creator of the game, Kaycee, was a geek and died in 2006, so it's likely that she knew about the law too. "Grimora" is a deformation of the French word "Grimoire", which designate a book about magic, or that _is_ magic. Grimora seems to be mage of some kind, likely a necromancer, and she make cards by writing. "Magnificus" is a Latin word meaning "magnificent", and is etymologically made from the word "magnus"("great", or even just "tall") and "facio"("making"). Magnificus is shown to be a classical fantasy wizard, down to using magic gems, living in a tower, and having his entire body covered under his beard. Classical fantasy wizards tend to have rather flamboyant and eccentric names. Likeswise, from what we see from his fight at the end of the game, he has a certain flair for epicness and grandiosity.

i find it funny people are saying they dislike P-03 because he is too bland and boring. but thats the point. Leshy is all about flavour, his camera captures images that would become the cards Magnificus is all about art, his brush paints the art of the cards Grimicia is all about lore, with her quil she inscribes the history and sigils on the cards and P-03 is about the mechanics, he designs just the numbers of the cards he is meant to be stagnant and robotic because he doesnt care about lore, art or flavour. whenever he explains mechanics its hugely different from Leshy, where as Leshy describes the act of empowering your cards as "you warm your beasts by the fire" and "you come across a strange obelisk in the woods" P-03 literally just says "pick a boost, it will power you card, or whatever, you will see".

If you actually play the game you will find that P-03's segment really overstays it's welcome with how many battles there are. It's okay that it is less interesting than Leshy's game, but it's less okay that it drags on for way longer while having less intrigue.

Pretty sure that’s the point, you have a lot of battles because for Po3, the gameplay aspect, the strategizing of the scenario and how to overcome it IS the fun part of him. Yeah, there are a lot more fights then Leshy’s but it’s because he finds those battles more exciting then anything else.

Leshy was the ultimate misunderstood antagonist, I don’t believe he was ever truly evil. He focused his game on atmosphere and worldbuilding, keeping the mechanics he thought the player would most enjoy while removing some of the bloat and unenjoyable junk. He was always interested in finding “a worthy challenger”, which is basically the reason his grizzly rushes exist- if the player can’t do some meta thinking to bypass his seeming impossible obstacles (which are passable, by the way), then Leshy doesn’t want them winning their card game off of the pretense of little challenge or high luck. He’s also incredibly aware that he and everybody he knows is in a game, that’s why he allows you to create your own deathcard; he knows he’s not hurting the real player, and he’s giving them an opportunity to increase their odds of winning or to try out new strategies. He even rolls with some of the more unfair aspects of his game, such as stinking up the moon to remove it’s damage. The only people Leshy ever kept hostage were the other scrybes, but he didn’t see them being turned into animals as a punishment, rather, he saw it as a sort of gift. Not to mention how well he treats his subordinates compared to the other scrybes. The prospector, angler, and trader… they’re all included as bosses, part of the storytelling… Leshy’s favorite part of the gameplay. Meanwhile P03 sacrifices his workforce for better cards, Magnificus tortures his students for a chance to be added to his deck, and so on. It was so heartbreaking for him to ask for just a few more rounds.

I see a lot of people comparing Leshy and P08's DMing styles, so I'd like to give my two bits as a game designer. Leshy is a Narrative GM, focusing more on the atmosphere and the immersion of the player in his setting. His mechanical creativity is a little short, which reveals itself as him just dropping bears on you when you beat him too hard. His step-by-step Oregon Trail adventure is endearing, especially when the fear of 'oh god this guy is trying to kill me and take my soul' has passed by. P08 is a purely mechanics-driven game designer, looking purely on how to create mechanics that are interesting (the Conveyors moving cards inwards, setting up a generator to create a different gameplay experience contrary to the rest of the game, etc.) However he fails UTTERLY at making a compelling story. He needs you to do something, and it's all crunch, compared to Leshy's 'Fluff'. So while you get more mechanical depth and challenge with P08 (namely because his cards don't have as wild synergies as, say, our favorite skeleton/rat swarm), you do get some interesting fights that do stand out; just not when you're slogging through his enormous section that breaks immersion. Which really sucks, because this references the tension between them in the story. If Leshy and P08 were able to come together and make a game with the former's storytelling and latter's mechanical know-how? It'd be phenomenal. In Conclusion: Inscryption is a game that highlights the need for the mechanical and artistic to work in conjunction with each other, but that's only a lesson you can learn if you're open to it.

Exactly, I think the middle part of the game could've made for a better transition and understand if it incorporated the style of the 4 scrybes better together and with more atmosphere Leshy's part is incridible but it's definitely not that replayable, like it's stupid but PO3 just adding a lane added that much more complexity to the game

With that in mind, it's also worth considering Magnificus - his 3D section is unique in the way the battle is presented. Which may be due to everything being deleted, but could also be because he is themed as the visual artist. Leshy narrates himself even in the Pixel section, so that's a really Him thing, the narration. Magnficus literally adds more dimensions to the card battle in his section, not merely raising everything from the flat table to an arena, but the implementation of the duel decks, not just as the more overt YGO reference, but mechanically different from your 'hand' in every other section. So he can be meshed in by enhancing the visuals and adding both literal and metaphorical dimension. It's harder to guess what element Grimora would add, although I do think it's notable that she's the only one not referred to as having a minion search for the OLD_DATA, so maybe more NPC lore? Or the more open gameboard we see in her section. I'd really love to see a DLC of Grimora's run, I want to do that pirate battle SO BADLY.

I got a different theory than most: What if the OLD_DATA is not supernatural AT ALL and is just evidence of very violent and inhumane illegal activities by the company? So they deleted/hidden it but while they were developing a 100% normal virtual card game, somehow the evidence resurfaced through the code (maybe that's the only supernatural element, the same that gave life to the game characters?) then the company buried it so no-one could charge them, then killed Luke to prevent him from taking legal action that would destroy the brand.

maybe kaycee was killed because company knew that she is the one who put this evidence in the code, and inside the game was AI that was programmed to avoid this data - and this data was contained in some of the AI files so they can't just simple delete or rewrite it or didn't have time for it before deadline? and then harsh decision was made about just busting it in the fucking woods but kaycee (she was killed after company has had something on her, they thought about somebody from the company and found out about kaycee later) wrote coordinates and reseal card pack so it is actually not supernatural and the devil accident with turned off camera is just luke is so into the game that he just do what he's said to do so the most strange part is just the errors of camera and luke's insane laughter with the scales (simply driven mad by the stress) but hey it is old camera i suppose he's not very successful as a youtuber i suppose so he hasn't much money to spend on camera and stuff or maybe didn't bother... i wouldn't bother in his place like "fuck it hey i have a camera and i don't care until it explodes"

This game hits such a different tune as a tabletop card game player myself. The ending is super heavy on me. The characters seem to represent the major archetypes of card games that MTG had sort of researched on. There's Timmy, Johnny, Spike primarily. Timmy is a power gamer, Timmy likes dropping an army or the world-ender button and swinging to win. Johnny is a combo player, enjoying unique synergy of cards. Spike is the competitive player, playing with the sole purpose of finding efficient use of keywords and winning rapidly. There's also "Vorthos" which is sort of a mindset that is pushed aside for the other three. Vorthos players don't play with the sole goal of winning in mind, they play to portray a certain art direction or theme or even just a simple style. A Vorthos player would be right at home playing a tribal deck of crabs which has no synergy, simply because they're all crabs and that's fun to them. I am regularly a Vorthos player. In Commander format I made a Slimefoot deck because I like fungus and gardening, a Wrexial deck full of discard and sea monsters because I love Lovecraftian mythos, I even put my pirate deck in a literal small wooden pirate chest box and my treasure tokens are replica doubloons. Leshy is a Vorthos. Leshy was criticized by P03 for focusing too much on the "emotion" or "theme". Which makes sense because P03 is the foil of Leshy, being a Spike player. This is also very apparent in the way they present their exploration games. While Leshy is a legitimate story of survival, carrying similar themes with suspense of being hunted by some natural force. Your cards and deck generally aren't optimized all that great but they all fit into the theme. P03's world was streamlined, had a much more direct waypoint system, and you got to tailor your deck to a fairly high degree. In the end, all Leshy wanted to do was to have fun playing with a friend. When the scale is deleted and he just says "Please continue, we don't need to keep score" that honestly made me feel a bit choked up because to me (having played a lot of tabletop card games) it means something different. I've played with a lot of friends where we realize one of us is on the down and it's frustrating, luck of the draw is a real thing...somehow either myself or one of my friends manages to 'muck up' their turn...skip a draw or a trigger that would win them the game, attack or target the wrong thing. All intentional. Just because it's not the act of winning the game that matters, it was always just a fun social event to get together and play some Magic with friends. Then we'd look and see we'd have maybe 10 cards left in deck then someone would simply "and I'll swing for board! Next game?" or something like that... Leshy just wanted to provide you, the player, with a memorable experience. Something that was true to the theme, and in some cases fairly scary and nerve-wracking. All he was doing was his goal to provide a spooky horror scenario. Good job, Leshy.

You forgot Mel. Spike is the power gamer. Johnny/Jenny is the combo player. Timmy/Tammy likes big flashy cards. Vorthos likes flavor and lore. Mel likes interesting mechanical execution. The first three exist like a Venn Diagram: for defining players: players generally falling more into one category or another, but some potential flavoring from one or both of the others. The latter two operate as individual sliding scales separate both from each other and from the categorization of the former three. You can have a Vorthos Spike (they want the card to reflect a character well, but be costed to be competitively viable) for example. From the looks of things, P03 is a Anti-Vorthos Mel Spike with some Johnny tendencies: they care primarily about mechanical execution, particularly through inter-card synergies, and reaching their end goal whilst having no care for flavor whatsoever. Leshy, on the other hand seems to be an odd combination of Mel and Johnny with strong Vorthos inclinations and a few Spike Tendencies. His game style decidedly favors flavor and a good mechanical execution of it (ex: the trapper/trader fight reflecting how the player previously interacted with them) but he won't sacrifice gameplay mechanics if flavor doesn't make sense (ex: he doesn't stop the game or create an exemption if you stink up the moon). His totem fights reflect a clear desire to experiment with card and effect combinations (even if they are potentially suboptimal). All that said, he does occasionally jump to using "unfair" tactics to attempt to ensure victory (ex: bear rushes, using your own death cards against you, using totems before you can, and making the moon into a card for "value"). Oddly, they are both primarily Mels concerning mechanical execution first and foremost. Their disagreement comes from their additional psychographics. P03 doesn't care for lore at all (note that their world's cards had no tribes for example ) and designs the game to best ensure their ultimate victory first and foremost. Leshy, on the other hand, creates a flavorful world with which he can teach the player the game at a reasonable pace. Advance too fast, and he'll present an apparently impassible obstacle in an attempt to force you back to start so he can bring in the next mechanic. But if you can maneuver around said obstacle, he will just let you go on you merry way to the next stage, prioritizing them fairness of the rules over his own plans. He'll also allow the creation of some potentially stupendously broken cards upon failed runs in what seems to be an attempt to give you a better fighting chance so that you don't get too frustrated. In other words, their conflict appears to be that of a desire for a more balanced game versus a more enjoyable one.

Honestly, Leshy and maybe even the others (except P03, he’s just a dick), are all kinda tragic. They all genuinely seemed to enjoy the players presence, and seemed to mainly just devote themselves almost entirely to just making a good fun ride and show for the player. Sure like say, Leshy had obvious flaws in this design, like the forced loss instances just because he wanted to shove in new tutorials and mechanics. But aside from that, Leshy in particular went all out in just making a fun card game, with a great atmosphere that hooked in dozens of players! The idea that he murdered several people, and kills you if you lose, or even if you win? That’s just part of his world building! He knows he’s in a game, so killing your player character is just. “Alright, new round, and look! You get a fancy card for this run that you made yourself!” The main thing holding all 4 of these people back, is only what I can assume. Is their endless fighting and imprisoning each other to get the spotlight, and be on the face of the game.

I mean I can throw some stuff at you of why P03 might be tragic. P03 has sweet little golly as part of there personality, they even have a room for golly (the shop) where it's clear golly loved stoats (When mentioned by any other character stoats are called pathetic creatures). Golly is lonely and doesn't want the player to be lonely. P03 are trying to get the game out there but why? They only mention in some copies they will be the ruler, I wondered if they thought it was the logical thing to do to stop the in-fighting or to make sure they wouldn't be lonely again?

I see it like that they’re all different members of a game’s design team. Leshy’s balancing is pretty bad, but his works building, immersion, and replay value are immense. P03 can’t even come up with his own card ideas his creativity is so atrophied (Ex. ‘Exoskeleton’ is just one of Grimora’s Skeletons but with a new name) but since he’s a coder/developer on a mechanical level what he adds to and improves upon in the gameplay loop is innovative for how deep in you already are.

Even though he did some foul play during the “tutorial” and in a way “trapping” the in-game challengers by turning them into death cards, he never once had an evil intentions when doing so. He’s literally just doing it to play a game with the player, and in return we trapped him and stole his power away since we thought he was the bad guy. I actually really liked P03's section. (I liked ALL 4 of the bosses.) I loved the high tech theme and how he was like "Alright, whatever, let's bang this shit out." There are different personalities of people that play games, and he was just one of them. There doesn't need to be a deep debate. All 4 of them had different personalities and would naturally resonate with different people in different ways.

I do think P03's section is pretty funny as well. Aside from all the sinister stuff he's doing and how sadistic he can sometimes be to the player/Luke Carder, I do appreciate how overtly uncreative he is with the story-telling, down to the point that he basically just uses the Scribe's islands and the Scribes themselves as blatant influences, while Leshy seems to "create" the characters and setting for an immersive experience (at least that's sorta my theory on how the Prospector, Angler, Trapper/Trader and Woodcarver etc came into being, through Leshy's own mind) It also sorta seems like a typical 'generational gap' between the two DMs. Leshy is the old-school DM while P03 is basically the zoomer DM, to put it bluntly XD One has all the old-school props and is all about story-telling and atmosphere, while one is all about using technology and is all about strats and gameplay.

I think what makes the transition a bit of a downer is that Leshy's style was much more immersive. When dealing with P03, it's a natural inclination to miss that, since P03 clearly cares more about mechanics than theme and style.

Man, seeing the ending boss battles really tears me up inside Grimicia, her final 'boss' battle that she thought she'd have time for never happened, she even is surprised that she runs out of time, but even so she still shakes your hand and thanks you for your efforts, getting through her little 'dungeon' to appear as the final boss of 'her' story. Leshy, even though he had time for 1 more game, he was sad because he knew the end was coming, but he still wanted to play 1 more game, and he wanted it to go as long as possible, and set up the atmosphere for it, even as the items began vanishing, from the candles, to the scales, he just wants to play as 'long' as possible, and when there's nothing more either of you can do... he thanks you and gives you a 'good game' handshake, as is tradition. when magnificus' final battle arrived, he wanted to go out in a bang, in a 'duel' reminiscent of what we all hope happens in the future, 2 worthy foes facing off in an 'epic' battle, he combines the fan favorites from various card game themes, into a 'beautiful' canvas that was his duel with you, the tragedy was... he never got to thank you, to shake your hand which i feel is the saddest thing in all of any cardgame, it's tradition where you shake your opponent's hand if the duel was 'good'. Leshy's was the saddest though, because it reminds me of how we all feel when there's no longer enough time to do what we want. we just want to play that game we love for just another hour more, enjoy that moment we loved for one second more. When your dueling your friend, and you know it's going to be the last duel between you for w.e reason, you try to make it last, you make up any excuse to make it go another turn, misplays, forget the counters, reset our cards, endless resources... anything, just to prolong the game... just a few more rounds.

God, turn the cabin experience into an entire DLC. Multiple worlds, more events, more deck building. More challenges, more puzzles in the cabin... I was thinking: Challenge Mode, where you choose a scrybe to play against, with their own DM styles and dens. There you can only (or mainly) use cards from their own deck. In short, Leshy's cabin for everyone. Adventure mode, which plays like the 8-bit section, and you can mix and match cards from all decks. And if at all possible, a multiplayer mode, which would be a *nightmare* to develop and is clearly a very greedy wish of mine but damnit, I want to test these cards against other people.

I like Leshy's style of play more than P-03's. Yeah, having more options strategy-wise is cool, but a lot of P-30's cards are rather obvious rip-offs of the other three Scrybe's cards, and his descriptions of events and characters are so... bare bones and dismissive sounding. There's no 'life' to his game, and the fact that he keeps adding rules makes it an endless grind of ever-evolving strategy. He comes off like some whiny sore loser, and I will be glad when I can finish his chapter.

He explicitly dismisses Leshy's focus on lore and storytelling, and calls Magnificus (The artist) a buzzkill. "All that matters in a cardgame is perfect play." So I'm guessing Leshy does Lore, Magnificus, does the Art, And PO3 is probably the developer, balancing and playtesting cards(They all create cards obviously). Might be why someone plays a card game but as you say cold and lifeless without those other aspects. I haven't figured out what role Grimica plays in the design of the game.

He recreated the entire ynscription islands as par tof his game while Leshy was jsut doing his own bit. It seems it'd be the case for any other scrybe that take over. And him comming as a whiny sore looser is proaly fully intentional. I think the wy he said "Oh you jsut had good RNG" when you bast him kinda clue you in as to what kind of person he is. He is a parody of hypercompetitive players. Still, fully agree with you, Keshy is more fun. Kinda whish the bots on the cabin had lasted longer.

The game as a whole was a deconstruct of a creepypasta game; evil, sentient games that kill those who play it are a dime a dozen, but are what makes for an interesting story. The fact that everyone is sentient, but can't harm you, is why Leshy acted so evil; it was all part of the act. PO3 just wanted a way to be in control, which is why they try to upload the game into the internet. It even states "most of them", not all, showing that it sought a way to not be a minion.

P03 is trying to imitate that because he's assuming the player won't notice anything off that way, but he's just not into it. And I love how weirdly smug the robot is like hdhsushhdhs okay toaster. I guess I also like him because he was the first character to speak to us, aside from Leshy? Consider this. The four Scrybes are the four basic elements that went into a good CCG. Lechy is the Story and Lore director, basically lead writer. Magnificus is the Lead Artist, perhaps with his students being the second artists being tormented for not their work not being in style with the rest of the art. P-03 (or Poe) would be the lead game designer, focused on mechanics and balance. Grimica would most likely be the Community Director, without a community (other people to play against) a CCG would be nothing. Another thing to consider, why would a Mycologist be the one to study the old data and merge things together? Think about this, Mold growing on floppy discs is a real thing and if you work with old media like that you should check it for growths. What if the OLD_DATA is some kind of fungus that grew on the disc and is interacting with it in some kind of supernatural or alien way?
@Paradox1012

@@Paradox1012 Sure its weird, but no weirder that than the "Advance Realm" supposed to fit on a 1.44 megabyte floppy. This hypothesis could go the other way as well. This is just one of a theory of mine, the scrybes mentioned that the old_data is buried deep within the files/well. I think the mycologist in physical form is a literal fungi and is a cause of digital decay on the floppy disk. By slowly decomposing parts of the disk, it revealed the barebones of the old_data. The merging of the cards probably happen when physical part of the floppy disk is decomposed, and the console/pc skipping the lost data and reading the datas into one.

To bad there was no actual Grimora and Magnificus full playthroughs, considering what we saw glimpses of that would have been really cool. But honestly I understand the creator was trying to forge a narrative here, but basically this is a "play once dont touch again" type of game with zero replayability, which was something I was hoping for since the Card themed rougelike experience with the cabin part was really nice and I think the best part of the game. If there were 4 different stages, for each of the scribes, with them having their own sub bosses... yeah the game could have been lot of fun long term. Yeah to bad we didnt get to play those instead of the boring cyber world... The creator of the game should consider releasing a non story mode, or Game+ where you can just play a rouge like game choosing whichever of the 4 Scribes worlds you wanna play in.

Act two is just a game, fun, but more hollow then the others. act three is run by stoat, cold, rational, missing the wild possibilities of the other two untill he lets you make a card. But act one, leshy, he loves what he does, he enjoys playing you, he lives for your encounters, even the line about how your time standing he just uses to plan encounters says it all, leshy cares about the experience more then the others and it’s reflected by his game. Just like how stoat disregards setting and plot right out of the gate where as leshy thrives on it. Honestly, not the sort of game that’s likely to get one, but I’d kill for a dlc that’s just you sitting down and playing leshy, not for some grand stakes but just because you both love the game

The dev’s actually making one, and it’s in open beta right now! :D It’s called ‘Kaycee’s Mod’ but it’s an official free expansion that removes the cheesy rewards you get from the puzzles (e.g. the squirrel totem that breaks the game in half, the extra candle, bees replacing squirrels, etc), instead of P03/the others being trapped inside, the stoat is just a regular card (which means it’s just you and Leshy for the fun of the game, not hurting anyone,) you get to pick different starting decks, you unlock more (new!) cards and lore, the moon is immune to death touch and stinky, the boss order is shuffled every run, you add and unlock modifiers to make the game harder (like only one candle, one less item in your pack, every boss is a totem battle, and so on), AND it’s not even complete yet, there’s going to be a bunch more added! It rules, and though it’s heavily implied to take place before the events of Inscryption back when Kaycee the employee was still alive, it still feels like you get to fulfill his final wish :’)
