Today, we're continuing a multi-video journey on which we will be building historically accurate and authentic city designs in Manor lords, a highly anticipated city-building game! I will explain how the game works as I play and explain some historical details as we go!
Manor Lords on Steam: store.steampowered.com/app/13...
Manor Lords is a strategy game that allows you to experience the life of a medieval lord. Grow your starting village into a bustling city, manage resources and production chains, and expand your lands through conquest.
Inspired by the art and architecture of late 14th century Franconia, Manor Lords prioritizes historical accuracy wherever possible, using it to inform gameplay mechanics and visuals alike. Common medieval tropes are avoided in favor of historical accuracy, in order to make the world feel more authentic, colorful, and believable.

In the situation where you built the houses before the wall, and they are stuck not interactable. Have you tried saving and reloading your save to see if they remains not interactable ? I ask because there is a random bug that makes some building not interactable (I really don't know the circumstances of that occuring), but when that happen, simply reloading the save fixes that. If it also works with what you are showcasing, it would save tremendous amount of manual work to reconstruct everything in the needed order

I'm hoping once early access gets off the ground the game will get more infrastructure: bridges, military fortifications, harbours and water trade routes, walled towns, road improvements (increaseing movement rate for marching on a road), naming settlements separately from region, monasteries. Long term upgrades: more out buildings for the manor to be added on over time, converting to a stone castle, more mid and late game upgrades and artisan types, guilds for large towns. I also hope more animal resources are added. Cows for dairy, hides, and meat. Selective breeding of sheep for wool, meat or milk quality (sheep aging and being slaughtered so we don't end up with infinite sheep), pigs. I'd also suggest they rename berries as wild edibles to better represent foraging, and bandits as outlaws to represent that anyone (even your own serfs) can become outlaws. A justice system of a lords court.

depends on what you try to protect yourself from. the etter wasn't there to hold of armies, but mainly animals (wild animals out and e.g. chicken in). and - even more importantly - the etter (as well as fences around individual property or churches) was first and foremost a _legal_ barrier (mainly in germanic cultures, not so much in of slavic cultures). meaning that within these fenced of areas certain rules applied, that wouldn't without this barrier - most prominently the hallowed ground of the church needed for proper christian burials. for this purpose the barrier didn't need to be super strong, but just visible.

I've done the same kind of thing myself Although, one thing that helped a lot to place buildings inside of the walls was to : - make a road where you'll want your wall to be - when placing the towers, place them along that road - then place the walls You'll end up with a road following your walls fairly close, and that road will help a ton to brace the backyards of burgages / other "zoned" stuff like pastures or the markets

Naturally the old district become more prominent as that's where the old family lived and as the place where the marketplace is located, it become desirable for the merchants class to have their office and residence in that district. As the city become larger, they would move the marketplace toward the outer district due to ease of logistics (closer to gate mean easier to unload into warehouse) and the old district become the "cloud district" because the old marketplace become more for luxury shops and the place where the rich and famous have their home (since it is where the old merchant's houses are)

I think that a way that could maybe help with creating the outer wall, so that you don't place houses that goes over that point, could be to make outer roads where the wall will be right outside of that road, that way you could form an idea of how big you want your town to be, being walled off.

Once again, I suggest the new settlement to be named: *_"Sankt Georg am Eisenwerk"_* This name represents -) the reason why it was settled (won the battle under the protection of the saint) -) the church blessing it (as the church is the literal center of the town) -) the lifeline of the settlement (continuous iron supply and it's products) -) that the settlement is a bit detached from the grasp of the current lord.

3x3 plot of flax, wheat/rye, ferlow is 12% increase of field futility per 3 years. doing same thing for flax, wheat/rye, then ferlow. then gives 3 small plots of flax, 3 small plots of barley, and 6 plots per year of wheat/rye. building multiuple water points is also good so lighning or drout can cause fields to catch fire. and closer water is faster put out for minimal damages. personally i will build manor next to a waterhole, then i will build a 2nd grainery and storehouse(setting the grainery to beer only, the store house for barley and military good only) there with the manor and 3 t3 houses for breweries. because as artizens they are always in the manor. and always ready to quickly put out fires. then all that will run inside itself within a full enclosure and wont need to check on anything with 1 person assigned to the graniery and stockhouse. then i will establish inns on either side of the manor so the ale can get to the locations quickly. assigning 1 family to 2 taverens, with a taveren on each side of the brewery and collection points is far more efficient then running a single taveren with 3 families. as for the walls. if you connect everything it will fully enclose the space. and archers and other troops dont make use of outer towers so outer towers are useless for purpose of military advantage. but using a couple of outer walls are good for setting build extensions for manor. however having walls that funnel, with an enclosure around forces enemy troops to funnel into a positions. so making something like a packman wall, with the mouth left open will cause troops to funnel into that space. and in the attempt to build toward a location like a mine. it will go up and up and up in costs. but after you reach the destinations for planned build. you can then delete the connecting points inbetween, leaving 1 at the edge of the paramiter of the city. this will give you a separate manor region around your mining deep pits, it will give you a build point for the exterior, and a fully enclosed manor. and when the walls arnt connected to the manor itself. it doesnt make a full enclosures. as the packman mouth is good for 2 reasons. it causes all trafic to go threw 1 point of access including invading armies or bandits. then if you have a pole arm troop. you can sellect them with the rasbruiters. because mailitia cant recieve special orders but the rasbruiters do. so while grouped together, it is like the rasbruiters commanding the pole arms do this. and then you can assign tight formation. stand your ground. then shield wall. now you can move your pole arm units into the funnel of the pacman mouth. causing a troop size of 26-120 to narrow down to 5. causing the single 36 man pole arm unit to defend it all. where for slighly more efficency you can assign a arrow unit behind the cuts of the back man mouth and also order them to stand your ground. and they will shoot over the wall to the seen troops by the polearms at the mouth. causing a 2 36man army to take out any size of force in a military defense. where the 2 methods for making external fenses with full access to managing things within the city. is 1 break the wall segment so there is a gap between the build spaces. and tip 2 is build a double wall so external internal faces internal external. then the bubble is isolated at the all point, and as long as it is broken from the main manor construct, it will not block everything out within the city. and that is how to build a full manor, a packman gillotine, and an external resource protection against bandits. to not only have a fully stable region. but a minimalistic military. so added military can be used with other regional conflicts. allowing you to fully focus on new regional growth and development at the true mid game point.

oh... i should also add. even if land is in low furtility. you can run the farm with ferlow fields to increase furtility for 3 years, and most all fields will have 50% or above yeilds. so if the land isnt fertial, always do this prior, unless you plan on running sheep grazing on fields to double furtility gains. then instead of a 6-12% gain per year you should see a 15-25% gain per year.

The castle being done and dusted once you finalize the walls is silly; as is not having city walls that do not depend on the castle walls. I hope it's one of the things that end up reworked as development progresses.

the dev hinted at normal city walls coming pretty early in the early access phase.

What about multiwalled cities? Our village has a wall and thus rights inside that wall, but what if the village out grows the wall? If you live/work outside the wall, do you not have those rights? What if a new bigger wall is made do they get those rights back? Do the people in the inner wall get more rights? If so will the local lord fight to stop these walls from being put up? Does the village/city give up other rights to the lord to get the rights a wall gives?

there is a caveat about gaining freedom here that wasn't mentioned/is a bit simplified: In order to gain freedom by living in a city, you (as a serf) would have to live in the city openly. That means you'd have to have a place to stay (renting is fine but it would bar you from obtaining citizenry in most cities) and pay taxes in the city. A 2nd point is that your former lord doesn't claim you within the year. The reason for this is that his property-rights only apply to you if he actively defends them. So if you live openly in a city for almost a year and your former lord claims you, you don't get your freedom (but you are not "required" to return to your lord either, if you pay taxes the city will usually tell your lord to kick rocks) because the year gets reset at this point. Now how does this work for people living outside the walls? Pretty easy: does the land belong to the city and is it part of its perimeters? In this case you live in the city. If you live in a village outside the city that belongs to the city, but is still a seperate community things get comlicated and a higher court would have to decide. Living outside the walls as a serf can be dangerous though. Why? Well if you are within the city there is basically no way a lord can force you to return (or kidnap you) while it is considerably easier to just grab you if you do live outside the walls.

I like to think that this game could be connected to CK3 where the whole map is a county while the smaller divisions are baronies.

Actually, I am hoping this is on the TO DO LIST, in which King's Favour allows the purchase of a license to crenellate. Which would allow for the modification by the dev later on if not allowable now ;)

if i remember right, a road costs nothing? build a ring road either just outside or just inside of where you will have the City wall. then before you build it you can erase the road.

now that I think of it, just inside the wall boundary will give you buffer space to keep from accidentally building too far out, and a road where people in the city can use if needed.

What if you tried to plant barley in the yellow areas? Could that work or do you say it's not worth it at all to make the tavern supply chain? Also, I think the village needs some space between the wall and forest to be cleared, so that there is no cover for thieves or enemies to sneak up to it.

latest patch seems to hose up the wall method. I cant seem to set up more than 4 towers and...they have to touch the manor. Oh well. maybe in the future we will have city walls..but, this is still amazing.

This needs to be capable instead of all the extra steps to trick the game into allowing you to be able to enclose a village inside a wall.
