Rob demonstrates how to make a cool adult bib without a tie. It is held in place with weighted shoulders. They are filled with Poly-Pellets which are washable. For this easy sewing project, Rob used quality quilting cotton yardage. He chose Gradients - Blue Fragmented Stripe Blues & Greens Digitally Printed Yardage by Moda Fabrics. The Body Bib is perfect for eating in the car or on the couch, but it is also ideal for people with limited mobility and hand dexterity. Stroke victims, people with special needs and disabilities, and elderly people will all benefit from this adult bib without strings!

So glad I found your tutorial! My messiest spill was when I went to shake a coconut milk, tumeric smoothie in a plastic bottle but I forgot to tighten the cap....oh, it went splashing all over me, my face, the counter, the floor, my shoes. And you know how tumeric stains. Ugh! I have made 3 bibs for my 90 yr old mother & she loves them 😊 Am working on one made out of an old bath towel. Not doubling material, so will make pockets with leftover cutting to hold the poly pellets. Will have to hand sew that bit. Will see how it goes. Thanks for your enthusiasm!!!

what a great idea with the poly beans in the shoulders. A lot of older people have trouble getting their arms up to their neck for ties.

I make a lot of these (and now sell them), but rather than the beads I just make the over-shoulder-flaps about 17" and the weight holds them in place. I tend to use flannel for the lining and it 'sticks' to most of the poly blouses that more mature ladies wear. I started making my 'dignity bibs' for my mother when she entered a nursing home. The ones that hooked behind the neck were too difficult to use. Extra tip, roll one in a plastic baggie and carry in their purse. At the restaurant you have something to carry the soiled one home in.

As soon as I watched this video this morning, I went out and bought the supplies. Found a nice remnant just shy of a yard that I liked and made an 'apron'. I love it! I also attached a loop of elastic about midway down on one side to loop a towel through. Thank you so much for the great idea!

I am making a few of these for my Uncle for Christmas. He recently had a stroke and I feel these will be perfect for my Aunt to put on him when she assist him during meals. Rob, I made something quite similar which might interest you. I extended the back down about mid back, so it simply hung without the beans. I added a lower piece with wide ties to create an actual apron. It simply slips over your head and you tie the back . The apron provides wide easy coverage when cooking or BBQ-ing..

Either lining with or backing with PUL would create a liquid proof barrier, if needed. PUL is used for making cloth diapers. I love the idea of a removable pellet pouch to make washing easier.

I was looking for different options for bibs for my severely handicapped neice who just turned 16. She drools alot and needs something that can be fun yet useful. I added some fidgeting items to help her keep her hands busy and with that keeps her from biting herself so much. I used the poly beads in removable pouches on her shoulders to keep her head from drooping all the time to the sides. I did spray a sealant, like for shoes, on the back piece to keep her dry. Washed just fine without crinkly or shrinking. The poly beads make it a weighted bib and helps calm her. I have an embroidery machine so of course had to do that too on the front. Made it fit her age better. Mom loves em and super easy to wash. Just some ideas....

what a great tutorial. i think i will do it but leave shoulder end open , make a pouch of beans and then pop then in and add a snap to close it . then when time to wash remove the bean pouch and wash and dry then re-add them.

I have some "family picnic" fabric that I bought a few years ago with adult bibs in mind. We have a family reunion every summer and it is the adults that seem to spill/drip food on ourselves more than the kids. This pattern looks so easy and with no fasteners it is simple to make and also to use. Of course I will have to start with a "prototype" that will be mine for in the car where most of my messes take place.

Washing and drying instructions would be nice to have for those that have never uses poly pallets before. Well done. You could even quilt the layers of fabric together, then bind after adding the pellets. Sew awesome.

The pellet packaging has washing instuctions on it. I believe they are washable. not sure of the drying instruction though.

Its my understanding they can be washed but not dried. I am planning on making one for my MIL who has hand tremors. I will make it w/o putting the pellets in the shoulders. But make bean bags that snap on/off for washing/drying. Someone else commented that with the beanbags, you could use rice for the weights. I would think if it comes off for washing you could use just about anything handy.

Thank you so much. My best friend's husband's has been diagnosed with brain cancer. For awhile,things looked good. unfortunately we are now at that stage of his illness that his journey is coming to an end in time. She asked me if I would make him fun,happy adult bib 's. Watching you make this style, I believe will work. I might have to extened the back atea for maybe tabs,to sew on velcro. Might also try terry cloth,or towels,with fabric. You are always fun to watch,and Thank you again.👌😊💕

Great tutorial Rob!! I’m going to use Ombré Metallic dots fabric, my fave these days! Although I plan on incorporating some of the Turkish weave terry by Shannon Fabrics, too! And my messiest & smelliest food spill in the car is my feeding tube formula! If you have ever smelled either baby formula Nutrimigen or Alimentum, those are so awesome to smell compared to my formula Vivonex TEN. It is horrific, and the smell can’t be wiped off clothing! So this would be absolutely perfect for the car trips when I have to refill the pump bag! I will be adding this tutorial to my list of items that are perfect for those of us in the disability community! Well done, and thank you bunches!!

My biggest mess was Italian bake down the entire front of my light blue/white striped sweatshirt at a restaurant. Of course, it was the first big bite! I guess I wanted to be patriotic. Lol

Many months ago...i made 2 for gifts...they love them...no complains about it except my husband forgot his in the dryer...turns out it hasn t melted too much but i’m sure it shouldn t be left again I used flannelette for the front and 100% cotton for the back. Decorative stiches all around with a matching colour thread. I am doing 2 more for Christx as gifts. Thanks for this very well thought of pattern.

Another great idea! That idea also turns it into a shop apron that'll protect clothing from paint, stains, etc. To give more functionality, an old belt or a cord can be worn over it to help keep it in place.

Sandra Borchers I'm thinking maybe use something other than plastic so it will withstand washing. Plastic hardens in cold water and melts in heat. What about rip-stop fabric for a backing? My friend asked me to make her an "apron" for eating because, just like me, she tends to ruin all of her shirts. I have been looking all over for a pattern I was satisfied would be comfortable to her because she is a much larger girl than I. My messiest spill was in the car. It was a cold winter day and I was all dressed up & had on a brand new down coat. I decided to stop at the pizza shop to grab a slice to take with me. When I got to the car, I realized the pizza would be cold by the time I arrived at my destination, so decided to eat it in the car. No problem, I said to myself. I'll crank up the heater full blast, & I've got my pizza box to catch any drips or crumbs. Alas, what I didn't realize is that the heater was blowing so hard, that the melted grease from the pepperoni & cheese were spraying like a horizontal rainstorm! When I looked down, it was all over my new coat! Yikes! Seriously, this is a great idea, & I've been going to make one for years; just never got to it. I have fibromyalgia and terrible back pain. Sometimes so bad, I have to prop myself up against the pillows in bed to eat, because sitting up straight or standing just hurts too much. That makes a nice area between my tray & mouth to spill on.

What an amazing tutorial Rob! This would be great for so many people with health problems! The one for me is my sweet neighbor whose hands are so arthritic and twisted she just can't tie an apron! My first job was in the kitchen at a nursing home. I was on dish duty one day and trying to push the huge tray cart (that had about 30 trays of food) closer to the dish room so I could clear it. The cart got stuck on an uneven place in the floor and the whole thing came crashing down. Broken glass, liquids, food splatters, the whole nine yards. All, while my boss was sitting right next to the dish room, is his office. He nearly fired me on the spot! I think the only thing that saved me was that my mom also worked there and she begged for mercy on my behalf 😬

I have been requested to make bibs for my father. He currently uses a hand towel and secured it with some line and alligator clips. I love this idea but am also concerned about the wash ability with the weight of the beads as this is something that needs to be launders regularly. Please let me know how to overcome this hurdle because I love this design!!

Making it for ME..it never fails..try to be as careful as possible and bam..down goes the food on my chest. Thank heavens for dawn to get grease stains out also. I think also that one could you us dry uncooked rice if need be.

Maybe I'm having a senior moment. Suggested fabric is 44/45" wide x 36" long (vertical stripe). Constructed has a horizontal stripe. So, finished garment is approx 22" w x 18" long? If I use a directional print, finished garment would be approx 18" w x 22" long? Is the approx 4" variable important when cutting the shoulder/neck line?

Oldtimer Lee , you still have the full yard length, because you only fold the 44” width in half. So finished is 22” wide by 36” long. I can see this made with flannel or terry cloth for a more absorbent “bib”. Great tutorial,

Thank you for your reply. It is a great tutorial. I'm planning to make some for "last minute" gifts. My quandary is about directional prints. If I have fabric with trees (for example) standing upright, parallel to the selvage edges. Finished at 22"x36" will have the trees lying on their sides. If I fold to keep the trees vertical, will that materially affect the neck/shoulder fit and/or length. Or is this pattern simply not suited for some directional prints, such as trees? (Hoping that makes sense... ) Again, thank you for your reply.

@@oldtimerlee8820 I understand what you are asking. I believe that if you are using a directional print that goes horizontal (selvage to selvage) rather than vertical (down the length of the fabric), you will need at least 44 inches of fabric length. That would come to one and one third yards of fabric. You will need to cut the fabric into two pieces equal (22 x 36 inches). Then turn one piece around so that each piece will be have the print going in the same direction for the front and back. You can then clip or pin the pieces together to make the neck cut. Sewing would still be the same, though you won't have a fold on one side.

Tuzzy, thank you. That makes sense. By using extra length and cutting as mentioned, there's no effect on shoulder/neck opening & width dimensions, as would be otherwise.

It is my understanding they can be washed but not dried. I plan on making one for my MIL who has hand tremors. I will make it w/o the beads in the shoulders, but make little beanbags that snap on/off for washing. Someone else commented that w the beanbags you could also use rice for the weights.
