I'm dutch and the pride thing is probably because of the VOC, not really our colonial empire. Pride for our old colonial empire is not that prevalent (honestly, most people have pretty negative opinions about our colonial legacy) but a lot of people here are proud that we had the most valuable company in human history and they often talk about the Dutch 'entrepreneurial spirit' whenever the VOC comes up.

I've read that Japan does not accept foreign driver's licenses, period. You need a Japanese license or you cannot drive on Japanese roads. You have to take the test... and retake it periodically, in order to renew your license (at least after you reach a certain age)
