Preamp mode doesn't turn off the amplifiers. It just breaks the connection from the preamp but the amps are still biased and dissipating heat. The reason the unit runs cooler in preamp mode is because it automatically switches to Eco mode so the amps are biased at a lower voltage rail. The preamp on this AV receiver is so good that it measures better than anything Marantz makes on equal footing to to the AV8805 and a step up from the AV7706. Cheers.

Great video, as always! Once you solved the bass problem, did the unit sound better with your external amplification vs the internals? Or was the difference negligible?

Love the review, I wonder why Marantz or Denon have not incorporated XLR inputs into any of their receivers? Feels like tablesteaks at this point for a flagship receiver at that price point.

Great video Youthman. I sure look forward to upgrading my AVR next year around this time. Hopefully by then the HDMI issue will be fixed & there will be more than one HDMI 2.1 offered 👍🏻 I still consider myself a bit of an amateur audiofile so I just want a strong AVR to power my 5.1.2 SVS system. Right now I’m leaning towards either the Denon AVR-X6700 or the AVR-X4700H. Maybe one day I’ll add amplifiers. I’d love to hear the difference between a Denon & Marantz in person Keep up the great work Youthman. Merry Christmas

Good review. I am upgrading my HT to 4k and have been doing research on what receiver to purchase. Tough situation because this receiver and many others are continually out of stock. However at a local electronics store, Nebraska Furniture Mart, they had this SR8015 on sale brand new for $2,200. They only had 3 in stock so I picked one up. They may have some new models coming out in a few months but the current model has all I need and then some so I would rather save a grand.

I had been planning on a 7706 with emotiva 11 channel. But I think you just talked me into the AVR. For what i have and the ability to add later this just makes sense....Plus Audioholics comment on the preamp mode over the 7706.....Also, I researched those D-box for several hours yesterday. Pretty dang cool but whew, a whole lot of money....Excellent review on this video....Thanks so much

A quick thought, did you use the set up mic again with the pre and amp setup to get the eq. set for the external amp operation. When I did that on my system it made a big difference. Keep up the great video

I got the sr5010 after my father died it’s a masterpiece of a receiver it may not be the most expensive but it’s certainly powerful and very good for a medium and small home theatre so if you want a budget receiver that still has audssey atmos and dtsx and you have a small or medium home theatre then you should get it

I have had this for over a month and really like it. The only real issue I've seen is it can take around 8 seconds to "latch" on to Dolby Vision signals from my Oppo-203. (a bit less time for the Apple TV for some reason.)

Regarding the design, there’s two ways of looking at it. You can hope for a more modernised look or if you use Rolex as an example - their watches are still flagship and the design has hardly changed over the years (datejust etc). I like the design. The front lens reminds me of CP Company (which I also like) 😀 just my humble opinion. Thanks for another great video Youthman 👌🏻

Hey Youthman, Thanks for the vid. After your good reviews. I purchased the 8015. If you could shed some light, the dealer and the Marantz rep are not sure if I can do the following: I have a PJ theater running 7.2.4 And I have a pool table area with a tv and 2 in ceiling speakers all running to the 8015. The 8015 can run 11 channels at the same time but is a 13 channel receiver. If people were over for a football game, could I easily create a preset that allows me to send power to the pool table speakers and reduce my theatre speakers channels, say down to 3.1 and set the pool table as a zone 2 at the same time without unplugging stuff in the 8015. Thanks for any tips

Test pure direct at all? Seems very flat compared to my Denon 2808. Good because I can turn it up louder, but I feel like it’s missing details in the upper mids to highs. . Sound wonderful with Audyssey enabled though.

I am asking because I am contemplating the SR8015 now and down the road splurging for a high-quality power amp later but do not want to do so at the expense of sound quality such as things like sound separation that you enthused about when reviewing the 7706. Hi Youthman, Really love your channel , I have been following your contact for a while now and really appreciate what you bring. I have a 5.1.4 set up running a Denon 3600 along with a Marantz Mm7705 separate five channel amp . I don’t really notice any sound upgrade by hooking my left, front ,centre ,and surrounds, up to the amp ,and just running my Atmos off the 3600 My question is if I purchased the 8015. Would that give me quite a bit more power (sound) than having the 3600 running, along with my separate app. I’m limited for space so would like to do away with the amp if it all possible as it is not really upgrading my system as much as I thought. Your feedback, and help , would be greatly appreciated thank you keep up the great work!! Bruce McCoy

Thank you so much for the your reviews, after many years of money saving, I finally bought the Marantz 8015, and I really love this receiver! I have a pair of Klipsch 6000f as front channel, and a pair of Klipsch 160m as rear surround, but I don't want to stress/damage the my new receiver with a mismatched line speaker setup, so did you think i can use togheter the 160m (which has old tweeter design) as surround channel and the 6000f (which has new tweeter design) as front channel, with the Marantz 8015 ?

I have now sr 6012 and have for 5 years. Sound great atmos and dts x. The next amp i wait for the new recievers from marantz next year 2022 or 2023. Here marantz with kef speakers and svs sub on a oled tv and a oppo 203.

I have the SR 7008 and I’ve been super happy with the movie theater mode. Stereo 2 channel, it really runs out of steam. I have a stand-alone 200 watt stereo amplifier and when I hook that up it’s just a totally different animal. 125 watts to 200 is a big difference. But I just can’t really justify that additional big bock of an anti wife like mode. So it’s perfectly fine. I’ve learned to live with it. Marantz has these 140 watt new units like you have just reviewed. Don’t know if the extra 15 watts will make a difference. My receiver powers Focal Electra’s 1028Be. It really sounds amazing. Prior to the Marantz, I had the flagship Pioneer elite. That sucker was just an animal! It broke in 2 years! Never ever will I buy Pioneer again just pure junk. My unit was purchased from Music Direct. Salesman said the sound of the Marantz is an upgrade over the Pioneer but not as powerful. He was spot on

Just purchased the SR8015 and not sure how i am feeling about it. I am running a 7.2.2 right now. All def tech. Two front D11 speakers. Large center. Two pro monitor 1000 at rear. Two bi polar at center and two ceilings. Then just added two SVS SB16-Ultras. I cant seem to get the system loud enough. I had a yamaha 1080 running the system prior but i am not that happy with this Marantz at the highest volume. Am i missing something?

The reason for the difference in Preamp vs non Preamp mode is that in Preamp mode, Audyssey is disabled! No EQ or treatment is applied and the sound just passes through. I found this out on the denon X8500h

Thank you for excellent reviews! I just added monolith 7x to my marantz sr8015 and one thing I noticed i lost bass from fronts especially in pre amp mode. Tried to listen music from front channels without subwoofer and its kinda sounded weird. Should i run audysee ?

Yes anytime you add new equipment or at acoustic treatment, you definitely need to re-run your calibration.

Where is the better sound - 8015 vs. 7705+emotiva/moniprice? Price is the same Really wait for your 7706 full review. I want to upgrade my 8012, and choosing the path: - 8015 ($3200) - 7705+monoprice/emotiva/parasound ($3300-$4200) - 7706+something/emotiva/parasound ($4100-$5000) I’m using 5.1 system, and more interested in 2ch. Your advice will be very helpful. Is it worth paying extra $800 for 7706, as well as overpay for emotiva/parasound?

SR8012 is a fantastic AVR. No need to upgrade to the SR8015 unless you are a hardcore gamer

I'd keep the 8012 - are you bi-amping the front left & right assuming they are towers. The 8015 has 1 HDMI 2.1 port and you'll probably use eArc anyway so let eArc send the sound back and connect your consoles to the TV. I'm running 8002s and 8001s - there is a big gap in numbers but they are the predecessors to the 8012, same power supply (780 watt). They both sound crazy good.

Nice video, very informative. At the 18:50 point you mentioned that the Marantz 8015 has some issues with the new Xbox Series X. Can you provide me more details on what those issues are? I just got an Xbox Series X so compatibility with the Marantz at 4K/120 is very important to me. Thanks.

This or 7706 I believe with separate amplifiers? I kinda like the separation myself. I wish the audio industry would come up with a solution to future proof equipment. I can't stand when another audio format comes out and you can't either send your equipment in to be added on or buy an adapter to add on to your equipment. 😁

Excuse me, guys, I am a 5.1.2 speaker. I want to connect the center and floor three-way bi-amps and surround them normally all the way, and all the way to the sky channel! I wonder if 8015 can allow me to connect like this? Is there such a setting in the settings options?

We used to with the PS4 and a Harmony Blaster but Sony made some changes that prevent that.

The confusing part is why would I buy the Marantz over the Denon due to the commonality of these components. With Sound United being the distributor for both, and am torn should I pay more for the same receiver in a different box. Is most curious. Love your Home Theater adventures. My favorite was your classic Klipsch recapping. That was fun.

The sound signature is different between Marantz and Denon even if they use some similar parts. There are a few areas inside both units that are quite different such as Toroidal Transformer design in Marantz. IMO If you're a hardcore movie watcher, go with Denon. It gives you more punch in movie scenes like explosions; but if you also listen to music or watch video shows, go with Marantz. Generally, Denon is a bit clinical and bright on music while Marantz is warm and musical. It should also be mentioned that the movie perfromance of flagship Marantz models like SR 8015/12 is quite impressive! Marantz uses more premium parts.

Currently I’m using 8012, do you think it’s worth upgrading (sound-wise) to 8015 considering I don’t care about 13CH, HDMI2.1 and 8K?

Hi Andy, if you already have the SR8012 and do not need HDMI 2.1, 8K or are a hardcore gamer, I do not see any reason to upgrade. The SR8012 is a FANTASTIC AVR.

With some of these new 15.2 channel models coming out (like from Anthem) with HDMI 2.1 boards arriving later on without all the issues, the Denon and Marantz flagship lineup looks to be a day late and a dollar short.

The majority of consumers don't go more than 7.2.4 (11.2). With 2020 Flagship D & M, you can add 2 more channels by an external amp.

@@2011Au And your point? The D&M options are not as good a deal anymore. Bang vs buck-wise. Plus, the HDMI 2.1 boards and chipsets on 2020 D&M models are all faulty and may require a recall because they used Chinese Panasonic chips that were not fully tested.

For the record, D&M could not test something they did not have access to. They ordered a chipset with the HDMI 2.1 protocol. They did not know the Xbox would not be able to handle uncompressed video.

You can’t use the SR8015 in preamp mode and use the internal amps. Preamp mode disconnects the internal amplifiers so you would need to use an external amplifier in preamp mode.

Owner of a SR8015 for a month now. Upgraded from a 7015. Theres is a very noticeable difference in sound quality. I believe Audessy works better as well. Paired with B&W 700 speakers and SVS SB3000 subwoofer. Very pleased with it. Im contemplating adding an Amplifier for front channels. Looking at a Parasound or Rotel. Have you ever tested those amps out ? And opinion of what you think would be better. ....or maybe a future review ?

@@sraja3399 the SR7015 sounds great. I was very pleased with it the short time I had it. If I had stayed with it I'm sure I'd still be happy. I decided I'd just go for it and by the top of the line. The 8015 was worth the extra money. Get what you can afford. Both are really good. 👌 btw I wasn't really concerned with extra channels. I wanted the sound quality improvement

I don't have Eco mode on, and only find that this gets hot on really loud and aggressive soundtracks, not all the time. (Although I usually have it at 10 - 20 below reference.)

I found it got hot regardless of whether you had content playing through it or not. Same with SR8012

It gets hot. Make sure you have good ventilation around it or buy an infinity fan. I have a T10 on top of my SR 8012!

hello bro....can u help me with my new yamaha sw300 subwoofer.....whats the best settings for this subwoofer if u have heard of....i have a small room and running a 5.1.4 setup there....i get somewhat muffled and ears hurting sound in there.....i use bookshelf speakers in my whole setup.....there is tone option in pioneer amp....which setting will sound neutral or pleasing shall I increase treble all the way to 10 and reduce the bass to -2 or shall I keep them on 0 dB reference levels for both bass and treble ????....whats the best tone setting for that.....and what's the best crossover setting for the sub I have ??? becoz there is an option in my sub as high cut and it ranges from 40hz to 150hz.....plz reply soon I really follow u with my small setup at home :) thx in advance and love from India :)

Your question has nothing to do with the SR 8015 review here! You might ask it in relative forums. But the crossover for a sub is normally 80 or 90 Hz. Don't muck around with your treble and bass manually. Let your receiver does the job.🤔

@@2011Au I didn't asked u this question.....to whom I asked might be too busy with something else.....anyways I didn't meant for the bass and treble through my pioneer MAAC calibration system......i meant even after calibration the bass and treble settings do not change on my avr.....i just wanted to know wht would sound more natural and realistic....high treble or low bass or high bass or low treble....or reference for both to 0.

honestly i dont know much about surround sound i usually just hook it up and mess around with it until it sounds good to me but easy way to do it is turn the crossover on the sub all the way up to as high as it goes and just let the receiver do the processing

No, amps typically do not have any controls. The AVR or Processor handles gains etc.

Youthman thanks for the swift response. Yamaha offer a superb remote experience on iPhone and iPad that is both convenient and very functional. Was hoping marantz offered the same. Plastic remotes are so 90’s. lol.

If you run 5.2.4, Marantz SR7015 is more than enough. Sound quality should be the same. SR 8015 has more power and a premium product. But if you add 2 more channels down the road, you have the option of adding an external amp to your 7015 or buy SR 8015 from now!😉

I would personally buy the 5015 and the 8015 and test each. If the 5015 is weak in 2 channel stereo, I would look at an external 2 channel or 5 channel amp and I would bi-amp the front left and right (4 channels) and also power the center channel from the external amp. Nearly same price but the amp will last forever and if the 5015 breaks down, you go Office Space on it. You can't Office Space the 8015 as it's too expensive but once parts are gone, you might find it can't be repaired.

Look in the setup menu for your 2ch settings. You can set your mains to large or small, set a crossover and choose LFE or LFE + Main when in 2ch

It works, you just cannot get 4K@120 or 8k@60. These are formats for gaming. Movies are typically shot in 4K@24 so movies will play fine.

This is from Audio Science Review : Conclusions Like clockwork, the performance of Marantz SR7015 tracks other Marantz AVRs we have tested. They take the excellent platform used in Denon sister products, and modify them to produce objectively worse performance by good bit. Distortion is sharply increased and extremely slow DAC filtering causes lots of ultrasonic noise, making any intention of playing "high-res" audio moot. Company feels subjectively the modifications improve the sound of the unit. With no controlled listening test demonstrating that, and measurements showing the opposite, I don't think the changes are wise or merited. Needless to say, I can't recommend the Marantz SR7015. I highly suggest you stick with the Denon counterparts instead.

Denon makes great AVR’s as well. Interestingly enough it is my understanding that Amir measures gear but doesn’t listen to it. So my question is how much of what he measured is perceptible with our ears? Not everything that can be measured can be heard.

He totally trashed the Marantzs he pulled the same on Denon X6700 as well & than Denon came up with an improved version X6700 . I might try Yamaha TR A6A when it becomes available.

mistake from marantz..... when using preamp mode, you are supposed to use a more powerful power amp. Then, why 6 db less on subwoofer out ?.....I will hope instead 3 db more !

@@Youthman BTW, when I moved back to France 3 years ago I decided to buy 4 old receiver ONKYO TX NR 5XXX because I love them. One seller invested 7000 euro in MARANTZ amp ,pream like yours and he was pissed by the bass in the marantz less punchy than Onkyo, exactly same with a guy who sold me a silver ONKYO TX NR 5008 who invested 6000euro in a YAMAHA pream, amp. Slouch bass, speaker feel tinny.... I believe, ONKYO made 15years ago THE BEST SURROUND RECEIVER OF ALL TIME😮

The price jumped to $4000 now. Comes with a 3 year warranty when their cheapest Marantz receiver came with 5 in the past. Emotiva, monolith, arcam offer 5 year warranties. The worst part is that they only offer parts for 7 years so the lifespan of these units is very short unless they never fail. The fact that the warranty was shortened suggests that Marantz believes that these products are actually very likely to fail after 3 years. If not, they would have kept the 5 year warranty or extended to 7. Companies should put their money where their mouth is. 2 of my 3 8000 series AV receivers can no longer be repaired as no one will accept them. I had a spare for downtime:)

@@Youthman I hope not but consolidation may lead to that. We as consumers have a responsibility to keep these companies honest by choosing where we invest our money. I also fixed the post as "put your money where your mouth is" was intended for Marantz, not for you 😀 The SR8015 is a compelling one-box solution but it's also priced way out of reach of the average consumer. Other companies like Emotiva and Monolith could certainly create a product at a much lower price point with a single massive toroidal transformer. Case in point, the Monolith 7x is like 2 Marantz 8015s and costs half as much with a 5 year warranty. I actually contacted both of them about that. It only needs 7 channels of amplification because that's what most people who own speakers from B&W, KEF, Revel, Sonus Faber need and, in all honesty, very, very few companies make Atmos speakers or upward firing modules. In fact, most people have 5 channels and just want to bi-amp the left and right which is why you need 7 channels. If we look at crutchfield, only 4 out of 51 AV receivers offer 11 channel amplification and only one of those is toroidal, namely the SR8015 so the 11 channel amplification is a very small percentage of folks. There's a huge gap in the $2,000-$2,500 range which is considered high-end where a company can swoop in with a compact cabinet and a toroidal transformer and present a compelling alternative to AV separates like the Marantz SR8015 does but at nearly double the price and half the warranty. I'm hoping Emotiva and Monolith rise to the occasion cause their power and build is second to none. Perhaps, that may lead to Denon and Marantz going back to their roots and becoming the companies they used to be.

My marantz sr6013 gets so freaking hott I can cook an egg 🥚 on it and can't even make it through 3 songs on spotify with out it shutting off ! Had to buy an aircom infinity fan for the top of it. Who wants to do that after spending 1,500 ! And there customer service is an absolute joke ! Easy set up ,and nice features for sure . But I dont think I d ever buy one again as this experience has not been great to say the least!

@@scottyo64 really . Ugh . Maybe something is wrong with mine then. If I don't keep the fan on it it will shut off under heavy load. But I can't get a hold of marantz. I did once got placed on hold for over 30 mins so I hung up . And they weren't that nice when she answered the phone and told her what the problem was . So I Google there customer service and it's bad man all bad 👎

@@bric7244, what are you running for speakers? Those mid tier AVR’s have fairly small power transformers in them, so you might be pushing it beyond its capabilities.

@@brucecarter6205 i m running klipsch. 280 fa tower's klipsch 450c center , klipsch rears 160 rears , klipsch 250s surrounds & two 15'' vega subs . & from my understanding I think the avr is 680 watts in total and all the klipsch are 98 db so there pretty proficient. I ve asked some guys on avs if I should run some amps they all said no I don't need to with those speakers.. I dont know ..

SR8015 is $3,200 USD comparing with 110 years anniversary Denon a110 $5,500 USD (a110 is based on Denon X8500H but $1,500 USD more)! So it again depends on your usage (movie or music) and your budget! See Audiholics comments on Denon a110.

I see 2 things that should be changed in future: 1. That useless porthole. 2. The remote is outdated and hasn't changed since 2009! I used to own a Marantz SR 6004 more than 10 years ago and it's remote was nearly the same as SR 8015/12. Come on Marantz! 😀

My Marantz SR8015 is junk. I can’t get it to display anything in 8k. It also has the well known HDMI 2.1 problems. I must say the audio is very good but anything to do with video is terrible. Marantz support has no suggestions. I would appreciate any suggestions you might have. I am using it with my Sony Z9J Tv.

@@Youthman I found the problem for 8k upscaling. You must use hdmi 4 instead of EARC. Really brings the tv to life. Just wanted to share this info with you. Couldn’t believe that Marantz, Sony or Best Buy did not know this.

I hate this review, it's making me want to cut into my ceiling and add speakers and upgrade my AVR to this unit. Damn, I was so happy for a long time with my Pioneer Elite SC-05 7.1 setup with my Kuro plasma. I upgraded to a Panasonic OLED and I've been fighting the urge ever since. I smell money about to burn and my wife going to lose it on me soon

7:08 jumping above you ?? on PS5? FYI PS5 games doesn't have Atmos till date, it uses simple PCM 7.1 for home theater and Tempest 3D audio for their stupid headphone.

You can enable Dolby Surround or DTS Neural up-mixing on the PS5 7.1 output. I guess that is what he is doing. I have found those modes way too aggressive in adding stuff to the height channels.

Hey it's a me GINO And me.. . I am a bangin my head on my desk I see all this tech on the back of this receiver that is never ever used, but a yet, we are paying for this tech. Q: *Why does this receiver have RCA PLUGS?* No one ever uses these RCA plugs everyone uses HDMI Like todays TV's that have these amazing speakers built into the TV 0 no one uses the speakers that are in TV's we use HDMI, but yet, we are paying for tech, we will never ever use. Like most we own a 55 inch TV or larger
