Today we do an in-depth review of the Marbles GI Utility Knife, MR278.
This knife is a reproduction of the old MIL-K, or demo knife that the US military had commissioned beginning in WWII. Over the years, several different companies had contracted out demo knives, notably Camillus. This particular knife is a modern iteration, made in China by Marbles (now a house brand of SMKW), and frankly is about as good an all-around EDC that you can get for the price. Even Lara thinks it's great and wants one!
The Marbles GI Utility Knife MR278 has your standard "camp knife" implements: A spearmaster blade, a caplifter/flathead screwdriver, a hawkbill can opener, an awl/scraper, and a lanyard bail. Everything here, including the scales, is stainless steel (the blade is 440A, but we cannot state with certainty whether the rest of the knife is 440A as well or not).
This knife has been used extensively and performs wonderfully! The blade sharpens up razor sharp, and very easily (at the drawback that 440A doesn't hold an edge the longest, though with it's ease of sharpening, that isn't a massive deal for light use), the can opener works incredibly well, and the awl/scraper comes in handy surprisingly often.
Perhaps best of all? The current price of this knife at SMKW is $6.99. That's right, 7 bucks! Or you can get their combo set of the GI knife and an eating tool for $9.99. The price is so great that I'm looking at getting another for each of us! We have no affiliation with them other than the fact that we have made numerous purchases from them in the past.
