I've only ever known mares to act out when they are in the barn/stall too long and not allowed to move freely. Horses, especially mares, can get very antsy when they are alone in a stall for hours on end. Unlike geldings, mares have all their sexual organs still there, which means all their hormones are there as well, which can lead to more heightened responses and gives them their "Mare Attitude". Best way to correct a "Mare Attitude" is by giving them more space, letting them exercise and interact with other horses more freely, and immediately correct any negative behaviors like pinning and kicking. edit: Estrus/Heat is different lol, thats when you just let them be sassy and leave em alone

@@Thedysfunctionalhobbyfarm that’s good! Glad she has friends, I know so many people who separate their horses because they “are so aggressive and keep fighting” and when they show me the behavior it’s literally just play, no pinned ears or actual aggressive striking. There’s definitely a difference between a moody or expressive horse versus a locked up horse. It can drive a horse insane being locked up all day and night. If they choose to be inside, that’s one thing, but they could HAVE that choice. The freedom to choose gives a horse more protection than anything a human can do. Horses aren’t helpless babies, they know how to be a horse and what’s best for them.

Like seriously the only times she ever even offered to pin her ears is when she gets injured and someones really messing with it. Honestly I feel like I lucked out with my first mare. I rescued her from a pretty severe neglect situation where she was in a 2 acre paddock with around 15 other horses; she had been the bottom of the pecking order and was terrified of anyone or anything going past her shoulder; and with patience, love, and TLC, she learned how to trust me. She ended up being the kindest, most willing horse I've ever had. She saved me just as much as I saved her. RIP, Willow. 💖

Mares were the superior warhorse in many horse cultures. I feel like a lot of the frustration I see is that they're denied their problem solving abilities or natural authority within the herd.
@basedimperialism
@basedimperialism 2 жыл бұрын
1. Most cultures used male horses as warhorses because the mares were used for breeding, though the prefered warhorses were just whichever horse was more willing to be in danger without spooking and running away. 2. Those that used mares as war horses did so because they could be milked while on campaign to provide an extra source of nourishment for soldiers, thus taking weight off of the group that would otherwise be hsed to transport food. For example, the Mongols did this, and it was one of the reasons they could travel lightly and quickly despite having large armies. Other cultures generally used slower cattle like cows instead, because most of the armies were slower infantry, not quicker cavalry. 3. Mares don't have a natural authority within a herd. The stallion is almost always the leader, but there is generally only one or two stallions in a herd. Anyone who thinks that mares run a herd only think so because they don't realize that a stallion doesn't spend time jocking for position within the herd, he's spending time guarding his harem from rival stallions and breeding his mares.
@coyoteclockworkstudios3140
@coyoteclockworkstudios3140 2 жыл бұрын
@@basedimperialism 1. The Bedouin, the breeders of the Arabian horse, have ten thousand years of matrilineal breeding, because mares didn't call out to other horses when they were preparing to raid. Therefore, most People of The Horse valued the mare as the superior warhorse. Western Europeans bred male warhorses, sure, but they're not the end all, be all of horse culture. The Mongols and Native Americans also valued mares as superior because a stallion's need to fuck interfered with everything else. 3. Mares absolutely have authority within a herd after the stallion. A lead mare, for example. The only horses in a herd that don't groom each other are the lead stallion and lowest ranking foal. Therefore, mares lead the search for water, safety, and food, make the decision to go or stay, and protect and care for foals. They don't do NOTHING while the lead stallion makes all the decisions with his dick, especially in the 3 years interim they have after dropping a foal and not coming into heat. Mares have also been observed returning to their stallion of choice WHEN they come into heat, after being "stolen" by other band stallions, so they definitely make their own choices and problem solve. It's like a lion pride: everyone thinks the lead male decides everything, when in reality the females do the majority of ensuring survival.
@monith9496

@@basedimperialism The only thing the stallion is defending is himself and his bloodline. The mare is the one actually putting her life at risk, having been known to charge head on to things like gators, which can easily snap their legs off. The mare is the one doing any sort of actual defending of the herd.
@basedimperialism
@basedimperialism 2 жыл бұрын
@@coyoteclockworkstudios3140 1. The Bedouin prefered mares for a specific reason. It was not because they were a "superior warhorse," it was because they were quiet. They had a specific purpose. THAT is why the Bedouin used mares. The Mongols used mares for the reason I stated. It's because they not only can produce milk for the nomads, but because they are more docile and easier to herd. ANYONE who has ACTUAL experience with horses knows that a mare is VASTLY easier to move around than a stallion is. The Native Americans did NOT prefer mares over stallions. Multiple records, in fact, SPECIFICALLY state that the Comanche, a tribe famous for their horsemenship, used stallions as war horses. NOT mares. Mares were used for breeding. 2. A mare's authority extends only over other mares. Mares are almost always below the stallion in status, and the exceptions are few and far between. The stallion moves the herd, ALWAYS. Mares who wander off from the herd are chased back into the herd by the stallion, who snakes the mare by lowering his head and shaking it from side-to-side like a snake. The stallion finds water for the herd. The mares do not. The stallion is always on guard from predators. This is one reason why they stay at the edge of the herd; so they can not only keep track of his mares, but have as wide of a range of vision of possible threats as he can. Stallions do not generally "protect" the young, because the females of pretty much every species have evolved for that job, because they have udders to feed the foal. The stallion does, however, often take younger colts on guard-duty with him, and it's not uncommon for young colts to accompany their fathers while on the move. The fact you compare a group of predators to a group of prey is strange. What makes you think that a group of carnivores who have to hunt down animals who will flee and often might turn up empty-pawed, is comparable to a group of herbivores who eat stationary grass? The lionesses may get the food, because there are more of them and one hunter might not be able to bring enough food for the entire group. A herd of horses, however, eat grass, and thus there is no reason for the majority of the group to do such tasks when one is capable of feeding the entire group. A dozen mares aren't needed to figure out that there is grass on the ground. Not to mention the fact that a lone lioness can walk out on their own, and have a reasonably good chance of returning to the pride. A lone horse cannot do the same, and staying together is the best chance of survival, and thus the stallion has the job of maintaining herd cohesion. All of these things would be obvious, had you ever observed a wild horse herd. However, I have serious doubts that you've ever even SEEN a wild horse herd.
@basedimperialism
@basedimperialism 2 жыл бұрын
@@monith9496 Completely wrong. A mare protects her foal, because such instinct is embedded in most animals. A stallion protects both foals and mares. There are NUMEROUS videos of a stallion attacking predators, putting himself between unfamiliar objects and his mares, and saving their foals from danger. In fact, I know exactly the video you're refering to when you mention the gator. Sorry to burst your bubble, but the horse that stomped on the gator in that video was a stallion, not a mare. You can see his seathe in the video. The stallion protects the herd by maintaining cohesion, warning the herd of predators from his position on the peripheral of the herd, and putting himself between the mares and foals, and any potentially dangerous animals. Your fallacy, just like the previous poster, is that you compare two entirely different groups of animals, i.e. lions and horses, and assume that because you see one similarity, everything else must be exactly the same. I bet you also think that stallions try to kill their own foals, too, so that they can re-breed their mares?

My sister/neighbor had a pregnant mare from an irresponsible breeding (neighbor had a stallion that wasn't kept separately [ETA separate from the mares], AND that we didn't know was a stud... and he broke into our pasture...🙄) due to foal in the MIDDLE OF WINTER. Had mama all set up in a foaling stall with supervised turnout, had no signs of labor, snow on the ground, 0 degrees F. She broke out of her stall and dropped the foal in the snow... I literally had to carry that filly inside because she was hypothermic, wasn't sure if she would make it, but she pulled through and became the sassiest little turd 🤣

It wasn’t hard enough to bruise, but I do NOT put up with that kind of behavior. It wasn’t a love bite either, so don’t even try to say that. Only ever had geldings personally, one was a lazy slacker and the other a petty brat, but my family farm had stallions and mares of all ages. The older stallion was a sweet pea, even when one of the mares went into season. All he ever wanted was to be pet and put his weight into you to take a nap; once I was at a late night showing, waiting my turn on some bleachers, and the old man just slumped his head into my back and snored the time away. idk what was with our mare line though, but they were all feisty as hell and always kept you on your toes. Great mothers, and each one had a favorite human, which would change randomly; especially when it was time to foal. One year the head mare only let child me and my grandfather who raised her in the pen to help the birth process. Her son became my first horse I trained from a babe; the petty brat just like his mom.

My mom has two horses, both mares. They're the sweetest. Well... We don't actually know their full names, only what they were called day-to-day. Pimu (Finnish name, it means chick/girl) and she was supposed to be a race horse, but didn't do well in her first couple races and was sold forward. My mom got her eventually, and has owned her for pretty much my entire life, so 17 years-ish. She's around 20-22 years old now, I think. Super calm horse, I've ridden her myself when I was a kid and later on, with my mom walking next to us and instructing me. She also loves coffee??? And has stolen a few sips from my mom's coffee cup when she wasn't looking. Mökö (no idea what it means) is a little sassier and rather bossy towards Pimu. She was also a race horse but retired early, though I can't remember why. We got her in 2016-ish, as company for Pimu since we moved away and she would've been alone on our fields. Mökö was afraid of wind when we got her, because during a storm, a tree fell on the stable she was at. Also loud noises lile sneezing or coughing. She's not as nice as Pimu and can be a bit unpredictable when ridden, but not dangerous. My nom hasn't allowed me to ride her, as she isn't as calm and trusty as Pimu. I don't mind, I can give them some treats either way occasionally.

One of the lesson mares at my barn, that I ride often, does the funniest thing when you try to pet her. So she hangs her head out, wanting attention, then when you try to pet her, she pulls her head away and gets upset. Like what do you want??😂😂😂
@ga4214
@ga4214 2 жыл бұрын
When you pet her do you bring your arms over her face or bring your arm from under her face? Cuz horses are prey and if you put your arm higher over their faces they get scared thinking you want to capture them so try bringing your arms from under her face from the side so she can see you of course. Hope this made sense 😅 If she gave the same results then she might just be sassy 😂 or wants to touch you without you touching her 😂
@lyla_eq

@@ga4214 I never pet horses like that, and are always careful. She is just a super sassy mare that wants attention, without gerting attention and pets. Lol, she is a real character. Pretty difficult to ride at walk/trot, but her canter is dreamy 😍. She also loves cantering as much as i do. So overall just an your local mare.

Ah the whole “mares are always sassy, bitchy and crazy, stallions as well. And geldings are puppies who can do no wrong” opinion that is just widespread in the equestrian world was a mistake. Like yes, horses do have personalities and can be quite headstrong, dramatic by default and can be a lot to handle. But the fact that it’s only mares (and stallions) that get the crazy stamp universally is just bad (and for the mares sake, mostly based in sexism. Women are crazy so mares also gotta be crazy. It’s just how they are). And yes before anyone says it, mares and stallions are proven more difficult to handle due to their hormonal changes (heat and breeding) but as long as you know what you’re doing, they can be angels. Some people make it seem like if you go near a stallion or mare, it will kill you. Also, this mindset is so damaging because it’s just a cheap way to label a horses behaviour (bucking,kicking,biting,refusing or generally acting up) and passing it off as the horses fault rather than looking into it (is the horse in pain? is it injured? is any of the tack hurting it? is it trying to tell me something? is it acting up due to bad experiences before (bad riders, trainers etc)) and just ignore it by “ah she’s a chestnut mare, you know how they are”. Plus this mindset is damaging to riders as well. Already when I started riding at age 6, the whole “mares are crazy” was ingrained in me and I did anything to not ride a mare. This changed when I met the sweetest Icelandic mare on a vacation barn (those you can rent for a ride) in Denmark, she was a dream. But even despite that, I’ve only ridden like 2 other mares (only briefly) since then. And I hate that so much. I hate that I and others have missed out on so many great horses due to this “you can’t ride a mare/stallion, they’re impossible” nonsense. Plus, as this comment section proves, they’re are endless amount of mares that are living angels and so many more geldings that are a nightmare.

When I started my riding lessons I had been trying to pursue working at that barn, to help me pay for the lessons. But when me and supervisors there talked about it, they were like, "hey, you need to tell us when you are menstruating so we can get someone else to clean out the stallion stalls." And of course I asked why. They told me that the stallions would try and kill me if I got close while being on my period. KILL ME! They would try to actually kill me. I was dumbfounded. I honestly thought that the trainers were the ones at fault, I thought they failed as trainers. But apparently those stallions had never been next to a menstruating woman, and it was just a horse thing. Like the horse isn't bad, it's natural for it to want to kill you. The told me that that was perfectly normal. It still makes me angry. Because can you imagine if a dog had that behavioral problem? That dog would be a public hazzard. And it would most likely be put down, or just ruin all of your relationships. If those horses really are like that. They shouldn't be in a lesson barn. They shouldn't be anywhere near people in general. Murderous intent is very different then being disobedient.

My horse trainer owns this mare who is the worst mare ever. You think chestnuts mares are bad? This palomino mare bites you when you tack her up not just while you tighten her cinch if you adjust the saddle reach to grab her breast collar and do her back cinch she bites and she’s also kicked before she also has the worst attitude while riding her. She is legit the queen of mares.

@@KTDbarrelracing actually she doesn’t have ulcers or bad handling 😂 my horse trainer handles her perfectly fine. She bites when you tighten the cinch sometimes bc something happened when she was a baby and her stomach got burned or something but she’s fine now it just causes her a little pain but other then that she just tries to make you scared of her.
