John Doran of the Quietus meets Mark E Smith of pre-eminent rock group The Fall, in a special Christmas episode of our British Masters series where John interviews the most influential and colourful figures from British popular music history. In part two of the episode, John chats to Mark about his time in a wheelchair, the new EP and The Fall's current steady line up.
In John's own words: "There are only a few things that separate us from the rest of the animal kingdom... the most important of these attributes, is an appreciation of the music of The Fall. This means if you do not listen to such albums as 'Hex Enduction Hour', 'This Nation's Saving Grace' and 'The Unutterable' you are worse than savage. The solution to what ails us is clear -- be less beastly, listen to The Fall"
Previous British Masters have included Gary Numan, Johnny Marr, and Dizzee Rascal.

I did indeed used to see him out and about in Prestwich. Usually coming out of Bargain Booze or sat inside The Forresters. Not that I'd ever approach the bastard as he once pushed me into a wall for having the temerity to exit the gents as he was stumbling in for a piss. He really was a true one off. RIP.

After watching this two-parter for the 500th time I should probably chuck my ten-bob in. Mark E. Smith was the only real, proper genius western civilisation has ever produced. When I say "genius," I mean a mind that is separate from any external influence yet at same time able to absorb it and interpret said influences in such as way that it the end result is so much better. The man could read a shopping receipt and in 30 seconds read out a bizarre, beautiful, madly sci-fi interpreteation of it and keep people guessing about it for years after. Nothing will ever compare to The Fall in my lifetime or anyone elses'. I love it when people say they don't get The Fall. It leaves more for the rest of us. Be less beastly...listen to The Fall.

Mark has got to a point where his look is again (more or less) matching with his real age. For anybody thinking that Mark has had a terrile aging, they must consider that for man who hasn´t work out in his life and who by this day still drinks three pints on a interview on absolute daylight, mark has hold on quite well. Mark could have been much more of a genius with maybe, lets say, only a third part of the abuse he´s taken. Respect the man anyway

***** I´m a deffinetly a fall fan, but come on, there is a lot of things I would have changed if somehow I had control over this music. I would say that almost half of the songs on their entire carrer are actually not just wacky, but not good, sometimes. Anyway, try to play that other 50% I´m talking about to a common public. They would go crazy about it and tell you to take some serious therapy. What bands do you consider as good as the fall ? Just kurious.

@@harrygallagher8105 Once the 2000's kicked in, The Fall just weren't the same any more. I was spoiled rotten on The Fall because I was there from their first single onwards, and saw them countless times during their peak years and saw all of the line - ups live, bootlegging most of those gigs as I went! And it was a hard thing to witness Mark's slow decline into alcohol addiction, and it was the drink that f*cked him, not the speed. If he'd just stuck to speed he'd have been fine and the gigs wouldn't have suffered. Some of those later gigs were painful to watch....what with Mark messing about with the amps and suchlike, ruining the sound and pissing off the rest of the group, and for no gain at all.
