Mark Lawson talks to former Oasis lynchpin Noel Gallagher about his life, career and becoming one of the most successful songwriters of his generation.
In this fascinating interview Noel talks frankly about his acrimonious relationship with his younger brother, the Oasis front man Liam. He explores his violent relationship with his father, his persistent truancy as a schoolboy and the fact that he was considered a weirdo because of his passion for music. Admitting that he was a control freak, he claims that he was driving force behind Oasis's phenomenal success: 'We were the last, we were the greatest, the end.'
Noel's career in music began in the late 1980's when he toured with Manchester based band Inspiral Carpets, working as their roadie. In 1991 he joined his brother Liam's new band, Oasis, where he established himself as the main songwriter. The band shot to fame after being signed by Creation Records during a gig that they very nearly weren't allowed to play in Glasgow in 1993. Their debut album Definitely Maybe went straight to number one on initial release and became the fastest selling debut album of all time.
Fuelling the Britpop movement , Oasis quickly became one of the biggest bands of the decade and, despite obvious tension between the Gallagher brothers, stayed together until 2009 when Noel quit after an argument with Liam minutes before they were due to appear on stage at a festival near Paris. Since then, Noel has formed his solo project, Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds.

You are so right. It is such a refreshing change, rather than them saying what they think you want to hear. Or even trying to glamorise their upbringing. Noel tells it like it is. God he must know how good he is, how could he not. He is a true genius, a once in a lifetime gift. I think he must know what an icon he is. When asked he just says, "I don't know where that song came from, it just fell out of the sky". I'm just so glad that I have been lucky enough for him to be around in my lifetime.

@@DrunkJesterSome people believe Noel must have had covert assistance to have written so many massive songs in such a short time, given he’d done nothing but a bit of noodling on a guitar until Oasis. Bowie, on the other hand, was an “overnight success” in 1972 with Ziggy Stardust. What many don’t appreciate is that Bowie had been testing, trying, failing and learning for about 6 years by then. His early stuff is quite good though there’s no hint of rock and roll stardom in The World Of David Bowie. What is there is melody & song structure. Some of my favourites are on that album. Like “When I live my dream”, a just stunning composition and despite his lack of self belief as a singer, there’s the Bowie we love, already with his unique voicing. Numerous stinkers of songs there, too. And note, he and his publisher would already have winnowed out the weakest songs. Many professionals reckon you’ve to write twice as many decent songs as you need in order to have enough. Even Noel said, towards the end of an Oasis recording trial, that he’d written 30 songs that year and they’d used only 5 of them. Therefore there’s agreement that you need a multiple of decent songs. Consider the first two Oasis album and especially the timescale. He’d no formal musical training. He hardly played the guitar early on. Sufficient to create melodies, lyrics basic chord progressions. Yet look at the stunning impact. If it was that easy, it would have been done more often. It’s easy to write bad songs. Even I can do it & did do it. But no more than a couple had enough about them to play to another person. I simply wasn’t any good at it. Noel clearly has a great deal of talent. He’s a superb melody writer, lyricist and structure author. But he went into the studio with all the separate guitar parts.and bass parts. He could play all those instruments well enough to have recorded the entire second album with noone more than Nick Brine (sound engineer at Rockfield Studios, he’s still there!) and producer Owen Morris. How the dickens did NG do that, with such a barren starting point. He adored the Beatles and met three of them. I’m inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt today, after decades of honing his craft. He’s also an excellent singer now, and he wasn’t initially. But I just don’t buy the narrative of working glass lad from Burnage with no musical underpinnings going from a complete unknown to world famous prolific song writer in 3-4 years, without external assistance. Uh oh. Then we’ve the not believable story of playing in Glasgow and being seen by sheer luck by Alan McGee, who offered them a record deal on the spot. That’s not really plausible. They weren’t good enough at the time. There’s no way they’d have gone to Scotland on a whim, as they were all broke. No, once you look at it, there are massive inconsistencies in the origins story. That doesn’t tell us what happened really. But it does tell us that they want you & me to believe it. Why? Why not just give us the truth? I wish I wasn’t suspicious, but I’ve been forced here by the facts. I will say in closing that Dead To The World is his best composition. Not the best / most preferred song by far. But everything about it is superb. Much earlier, he was helped. Why?

@@GT380man realistically if Noel hadn’t written the songs himself, Liam would’ve told everyone long before now. Every now and again musicians do come from nowhere and do amazing things (look at the Beatles), and accusing them of not writing their songs just because you couldn’t do the same stinks of jealousy

I am from London...in Wales...watching a band from Manchester. I kept my mouth firmly shut. At the end of the gig Liam and the others f**ked off. Noel then played a mini solo set. "im fucked, but am gonna play ya some songs" were his words. Best thing i ever heard...peace to ya.

Yeah, Noel had the better voice for sure. I remember watching Jools Holland one night with my dad & Noel sang (dunno where Liam even was) & dad just said "Well, if he can sing like that and he writes all the songs then his brother won't be in the band much longer." He was wrong, because that was early days and they stuck it out with Liam as frontman for another couple of albums and more than 5 years but it must've itched for Liam that there was another guy in the band that wrote most of the songs and could step up in a heartbeat to play frontman as needed. I mean, he plays a mean tambourine but you know what i mean (as either Gallagher would put it) 😆

I'd rather have a brother I'd spent 20 years of global success with and then fall out than have a brother that I see once a week for a Roast Dinner without either of us tasting success, fame and fortune. That's my opinion anyway. If you asked either of the Gallaghers I'm sure they'd both agree that they had 20 years of unbelievable success together and lived the dream together as brothers. Most brothers distance themselves from one another to a certain extent once they are married and have children anyway. They were close and living in each others pockets from Liam's birth until Oasis split, shared a bedroom, shared a love for Man City and music until Noel was 40 years old and Liam 35. What brothers do you know who are joined at the hip on a daily basis until their 40s? I'm surprised they lasted 20 years together considering the arguments, punch ups, alcohol and drugs tbh. Im a Manchester lad, I had 2 mates that were brothers, I tried to break up a fight between them once and ended up with a pint pot in my face. Noel and Liam are just normal Mancunian brothers. They'd have had punch ups and fall outs even if they were never in a band together. They'd have probably fell out and distanced themselves a lot sooner without the band

Nevermind places where they don't speak English - do you see a clip of the Monkeys playing to 100k Argentines singing along? This reflects their status in the UK, too, I'm sure. Oasis was more than a band (that sold waaaay more records and tickets than Arctic Monkeys), they were a fucking cultural phenomenon and a signifier of identity. This Canadian who wasn't there knows what Oasis meant. So yeah, Oasis > AM and it's not even close. Hell, AM are only the third best Monkey-named band, after Gorky's Zygotic Mynci and, natch, The Monkees.

You just don't get music like Don't look back in Anger on radio anymore, even back then I was praying it would be #1 here In Montreal Canada, but it was maybe top 2 to 5 in the end. So good, so simple yet so creative.

Noel! What a down to earth guy. Very honest. Prefer him to Liam. I can relate to him on many levels.

That's great! What band are you with? Global tours? Forgive me; I'm old.,....I am sure most folk know your musical success very well but I'm not down with the kids. Or did you mean you relate to his background? You and at least half the UK population. A deep connection indeed. Yeah.........

Yeah he’s been writing music for over 30 years pretty much non stop now. Very talented songwriter, as said by Paul McCartney. In the 2016 documentary Supersonic, Noel said that he thought Liam came out of it well but didn’t seem to like it. I actually thought Noel came out of it better because he talks about how much he loved music from a young age. Liam admits he wasn’t even interested in music, until he was hit with a hammer in a fight!

I totally agree that in the day that Oasis Are The Beatles Of The 1990s. In fact, in my hometown, in 2024, almost everyone is huge Oasis Fan's because we all appreciate Great Music. Times Have Musically Moved On . To most people, music and songwriting evolve with time, yet I'm glad that I live in this era ! Music Is Our Healer

He definitely has written multiple songs about his childhood and his dad. Very obvious, they're just cryptic enough for him to say they are gibberish or people need to work it out for themselves, like many of us have.

Fantastic interview. I was never an Oasis fan but Noel was the one guy I did like(he sings better than Liam) and when you listen to him in interviews you can see why. He's a straight shooter with a great sense of humor.

Now I know that I can relate to Noel's songwriting process. I find the music and Melody a hundred times easier to come up with, rather than the lyrics.

That’s how most people write songs. I’ve seen Bono singing basically gibberish, just to fit around the melody. I think I saw Michael Hutchence do the same. Then work on the actual words later.

Everybody lately with the hate for Noel. I love both brothers. But Liam is the one who likes to play it up for the cameras. Or at least he used to be. This is 11 years ago and Noel very honestly navigated an interview full of some uncomfortable topics by just being himself. He isn't a person filled with spite. He just is as he is.
