it's possible that the tradition of talking about this feeling has evolved from the gaelic cultures. I cannot believe this artist and song was in Eurovision ! It's like a highly priced gourmet meal in a cheap McDonald, this contest is a joke anyway and nobody takes it seriously, but I'm kinda amazed she was featured in it (and honeslty this is probably the best song that came out of the show in 20 years, by FAR !)

Yeah, we all in Portugal think that. The rules don't allow it though, there's a 3 minute maximum on time, and a 6 person maximum on stage.

The acoustics in that room add a whole extra layer - lots of reverb from all those hard surfaces. You can see how much the singers are feeling lifted by the richness of it. Beautiful.

@@the_light_writer Hello! I knew the story of the song thanks to the commentators of RTVE (Spanish public television) because they said it before her performance at the Eurovision Song Contest. They said that Maro composed this song as a tribute to her grandfather, who had recently passed away and they were really close to each other. That's why all the verses revolve around loss, melancholy and longing (that "saudade" so characteristic of Portugal). Here are the most representative ones: "Foi sempre o meu porto de abrigo". *He was always my safe place* (...) "Perdi o meu melhor amigo" * I lost my best friend * (...) "Thought you'd be by my side, always". Ps: the Portuguese song of Eurovision 2018, which was held in Lisbon, also talks about the loss of the grandmother of one of the singers and the song is called "O jardim" ("The garden"). I m from Turkey and dont know portuguese not evan a word. But that song , these voices captivated me. There s something different abput this song. I cant put it to words but it unconsciously gives you a piece of hope a piece of good old days, a piece of cosiness , a piece of homesickness. Thank you Maro for this. You made my day. I think Portugal will finish top 5 this year. This is my number 1 but unfortunately Turkey left eurovision 10 years ago. I can not vote for this but i hope you ll get a fantastic result.

I agree, what a humanistic project, especially as we all grapple with the changes in the last years of the pandemic. Thanks for including/teaching us the word sevdah, I just looked it up and see that has a long history and seems much like saudade (a hard word to translate).

They are rooted in the same place :) Saudade, sevdah is an emotional continuum that has regional varieties (just like different dialects or languages of the same linguistic family) It is all over Mediterranean countries and even goes deeper into the continent. Look up Amira Medunjanin (a modern sevdah singer): kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ZtOei6iGx6m8imQ.html "The word itself comes from the Turkish sevda which, in turn, derives from the Arabic word sawda (meaning black bile, from the root s-w-d, “black”), which in earlier times was used by doctors to denote one of the four humors purported to control human feelings and emotions. Com esta versão tinham muito mais hipóteses de ganhar mas a escolha vai na mesma direção tomada no FdC. @Maro, na Eurovisao imagino o início da música tal como a apresentas, na sua versão original. Depois entra o acústico, com as guitarras, com uma imagem envolvente por detrás do outro ensaio ao ar livre que fizeram( já que não podem ser mais do que 6 pessoas, ficando um ambiente mais intimista. Ou imagens do Portugal que sente saudade, de despedidas e de encontros, de sentimentos e de Vida..é ao que a música transporta.
