I'm sure you saw the rest of the episode but the reason why Volg's second was so desperate for Volg to win was because Volg's boxing career in Japan was based on this match. Shortly after this match, he got dropped from his gym and had to fly back home to Russia. That's why Volg says "...next time, huh?", cause there isn't gonna be a next time.

A bit of history about the inspirations for Volg and Sendo. As you've mentioned in the Volg v Ippo fight, Volg is inspired by the real world boxer Yuri Arbachakov and the fictional boxer Ivan Drago from the Rocky series. Sendo on the other hand is based off of Rocky Marciano an undefeated Heavy Weight boxer. He is called the Rocky of Naniwa by his fans and they refer to him like that because they are all fans of the Rocky movies. But Sendo wants to be compared to Marciano, not Balboa. So we basically got the anime version of Rocky vs Drago. Also a little fun fact about Rocky Marciano. Many people believe he was a blow for blow, pound for pound, "Who can take the most hits and still stay standing" type of fighter. And while he was fully able to take a good beating and keep going, he wasn't lacking in the defense department. Someone analyzed the incredibly few recordings we have of Marciano from his heydays and showed that he was proficient in glove parries, the rock away technique, and various other defensive moves. The man had some serious defensive chops to back up that raw power. And Sendo slowly learns how to be more defensive as well as the series goes on. He may not be able to parry or rockaway, but he does get better at it.... sort of.

During Volg's time in Japan, he was forced to fight as in-fighter as that was what the promoters wanted him so that the crowd will be pleased to watch him. Unfortunately for Volg, he is actually an out-boxer during the time he won amateur world championship. That's why this match is not really Volg's greatest form yet. Still this is a great fight. I'm not big on the particulars of boxing but apparently, Volg's fight with Sendo had his career riding on it. After this match he gets sent back to Russia which is why Volg says "Next ,huh?" implying that there won't be a next time as his career is over. His farewell to Ippo also hurts to watch.

After the Date fight, Kamogawa put Ippo on medical suspension for 3 months, so he wasn't able to train. Later in the episode, Volg does get dropped by his gym, then deported. The business end is a bitch.

Absolutely love this fight. I'm more partial to volg cause of his sweet technique but man I never fail to be in awe of how cool Sendo is!! Great fight from the two and a big step for the fighters they become later in the series

Sendo's smash is a called out of Razor Ruddock's smash. The anime doesn't portrait really good how it works; the idea is 3/4 upercut that turns into a straight and the actually method of how you generate power is pivoting in your lead foot so much that your back foot is barely touching the ground, twisting your back foot and your torso in the punch's direction, generating power with a weird ascendent angle was the essence. They did something similiar to the gazelle punch, the gazelle punch was never and upercut, it was a hook thrown from far away in a crouched stance.

I feel bad for volg losing this fight, but on the other hand, without that, we couldn't have had the rematch between ippo and Sendo 🔥🔥🔥 you should check out volg VS Suzuki fight, that was a brutal match.

13:28 my thought is that, since Sendo is right-handed and therefore has a stronger right arm, he can sacrifice some of his normal windup on the Smash to launch it faster, without losing power compared to his regular Smash… this would be meant for use against more agile fighters like Volg, or to break up his own rhythm to throw off opponents. Just an idea though, I’m no expert on boxing.

my guess is he used the lead knowing that Volg is able to block the first smash so Sendo used the first smash to break down his guard and stagger him and decided to change it up and switch to southpaw like you said to get closer to Volg and with that build up momentum like with the Dempsy roll

Best way to describe Volg's punching vs Sendo's is Volg goes "tap tap tap tap bang tap bang bang" whereas Sendo goes "feint feint feint feint, WHAM. Feint, WHAM WHAM WHAM."

Also I’m pretty sure this was during Ippo’s downtime after his loss to Date; he crashed pretty hard after that loss, and didn’t get back into the ring until about 6 months later. This was when he developed the Dempsey Roll for himself, but only after he actually got back to training. He also was on medical suspension for a good chunk of that time.

That was volgs last professional match in japan. He had to win that match or his gym would let him go.

Sendo's Smash is copy of Razor Ruddock's signature punch. A lead hook/uppercut. Ruddock would exaggerate the motion to get the other guy to flinch. Once they throw up their guard, u have the choice of throwing the hook or uppercut depending on their reaction.

Like I said before Volg is as powerful if not more powerful than Ippo and Sendo. Tbh I REALLY wanted Volg to win so we could see how much he improved to fight Ippo.

This fight always hurts b/c Volg won it, but that slip was called a down by hometown favoritism. Even Sendo knew he didn’t really win. They both go on to achieve some great accomplishments

Right now Ippo is just recovering from his lost against Date, so he hasn't even started training. 8:32 god I love that moment, its like the series is saying "oh shit, the tiger smells blood in the air" 15:10 but Volg is from other country. I like how Miyata can relate to that. Also, Volg got fucking robbed, sadly Sendo won just because he had a local advantage. 20:10 There is no next time, spoyler about Volg if you didn't watched the anime, it is very important to the story - - - - - - He retired after this, it was his last fight in Japan. Since he was an imported boxer they got rid of him after 2 looses, they dropped like he was nothing. But that is not the last we see of Volg in the story.

You need to se Ippo vs Sawamura and what leads up to it, even Mashiba hates his guts despite being what's another, stronger version of him.

Vorg actually visited the Ippo gym for a bit to get Ippo up a bit before the Sendo rematch. The coach saw vorg and offered him a opportunity in New York with an old friend that was looking for boxers. Vorg is a champ in America and right on the cusp of getting into the world title picture but currently he’s in Mexico City with Sendo and Wally to actually train up Wally for a upcoming fight which Ippo is there training up Sendo a bit. It’s not a bad choice to go to New York City especially as an Russian as it’s the home of the largest community of Russian people outside Russia itself. It’s very easy to get lost at Brighton beach and little Odessa as you see Russian written language, people speak Russian, and the cultural norms are everywhere. Vorg would likely be in this area knowing exactly what to do and what to say. It’s the same for New York’s three Chinatowns and see Chinese stuff everywhere and you just know it’s all good. Japanese is kinda rare in New York but it is spoken. You’re more likely to hear Spanish, British English, Irish English, Italian, some African languages, Hindi, and Korean in some areas. New York is a melting pot of cultures that when you know exactly where stuff is you go to it and have fun.

If I were volg, I would punch that referee really hard. Calling a slip as a knockdown? That made him lose points at the final few sec of the last round. Even though he was winning in point before that. That kunt referee showed favouritism. Now volg career in Japan is over. When it was his win.

Hometown decision , biased referee , lost alot of respect for Sendo as a character , he clearly knew he didn't win but his ego was too big and he was very pleased with getting the belt no matter what . Why a rematch , to train better ? If he was sincere he would have said at the microphone what he had to say , if not , only words in the wind . A Volg vs Ippo would have been better as a rematch then Sendo vs Ippo , we didn't see too much improvement from Sendo anyway , he didn't even deserved the belt in the first place , so what was to be expected .
