In the book "Bruce Lee: A Life" by Author Matthew Polly, Bruce stated that Norris wasn't what he consider to be a good fighter, that what he was doing was nothing more than a "game of tag" as far as in the way and manner that marital arts tournaments were conducted back in the 60's to mid 70's. He considered Lewis and Mike Stone as fighters.

One of the cool things about this video is that even though these men are at the time of filming past their prime, Danny Inosanto had yet to get his black belt in BJJ, and today he is still training teaching and progressing. Joe Lewis R.I.P. continued teaching until he passed away, and I was happy tp have been to one of his seminars, so that torch was passed by both men and the flame of Jeet Kune Do keeps on burning.

Mr. John Little who produced a biography (A Warriors Journey) about Bruce that included the complete footage of Bruce's unfinished Game Of Death mentioned that Mr. Herb Jackson who was one of Bruce's original students at his Chinatown school in Los Angeles was told by Bruce to go ahead and spar Joe Lewis who came to visit Bruce at his school. During the sparring session, Lewis was taking it pretty seriously and did an open clap hand technique on Jackson's ears that buckled him to his knee even though this was supposed to be a friendly sparring session. Herb Jackson mentioned after the fact that he thought that Lewis had popped his eardrums. Herb mentioned that Bruce was pissed at Lewis for doing this to one of his students and asked Jackson for the gloves so he (Bruce) could spar Lewis. Now over the years Joe Lewis claimed that he never sparred with Lee but Jackson said that he's a liar because he (Herb Jackson) and another one of Bruce's student's (Ted Wong) were both there and saw it stating that Joe Lewis could not touch Bruce at all, that Bruce was popping Lewis consistently while moving "in and out" during their sparring session. Afterwards Jackson stated that Bruce mentioned to him that he just wanted to make Lewis understand and realize that he (Lewis) did not have "all the answers" when it came to fighting/sparring.
@comicbookal
@comicbookal 2 жыл бұрын
@James Deen Well I'm not going to argue with you about this because apparently you don't have sense enough to do any RESEARCH first before making the asinine statement that Mr. .Lee never sparred or never had a school when all you have to do is GOOGLE it. You'll see photos of him "front and center" in photos that were taken at both his schools in Oakland and Los Angeles' s Chinatown District in California. On top of this, there are various videos here on KZfaq that clearly show Mr. Lee in his schools demonstrating "chi sao" (sticky hand) techniques as well as at home with a number of his students demonstrating various kicking techniques. . So I'm going to assume that your one of those ignorant Bruce Lee haters who definitely is "all mouth" with nothing to back it up, So maybe you, my friend should be the one to do exactly what you are expecting me to do which of course is to STFU and use what little intelligence God gave you to do as I made the suggestion of which is to RESEARCH first before anything else you care to comment on in a negative fashion about a man who will continue to be idolized, revered, and talked about long, long after you are gone from God's Green Earth, sir.

It's interesting how Dan mentions both Scott Loring and Bob Bremer, yet doesn't tell the tale of their sparring match at Bruce Lee's Chinatown school. At the 1967 Long Beach Internationals, Bruce introduced full contact sparring gear to the martial arts world and that sparring gear was regularly used at the Chinatown school. Bruce recruited several of Ed Parker's students (e.g., Bob Bremer, Dan Lee, Steve Golden, Larry Hartsell) and Parker was not happy about it. Parker student Scott Loring probably took the most offense to these defections, so he visited the Chinatown school and asked if he could spar full contact with one of Lee's students. Dan considered Bob Bremer to be the best fighter of the Chinatown school, so he asked Bob if he would spar against Loring. Bob accepted the challenge and their brief sparring match ended with Bremer straight blasting Loring into a wall.
@shamounian
@shamounian 3 жыл бұрын
The reason is because Scott Loring schooled Lewis in sparring since Lewis himself is on record saying Loring was one of the toughest kids he fought, as you hear in this interview. I assume Inosanto didn't want to humiliate Lewis since Bremer pummeled Loring with ease. So imagine what Bremer would do to Lewis in a fight, let alone Bruce. Bruce would have destroyed Lewis and buried him in a real fight.

@@shamounian Not to discredit any of your information or comments.but can the ability of one fighter be specifically judged by one fighter's success in beating another ? Let me give you an example of my reason for asking you this. Muhammad Ali had trouble whenever he fought Joe Frazier...but George Foreman dismantled Frazier...and Ali beat Foreman. I realize I am using Boxing compared to Martial Arts but I find it difficult to use that thinking as an actual mesurement for one person beating another when they are all highly trained ?

The core arts of JKD are Wing Chun, Boxing, and Fencing. The Seattle period was comprised of Bruce Lee's modified (e.g., Jun Fan Gung Fu) Wing Chun. The first year or so of the Oakland period maintained the JFGF structure, but after Lee's fight with Wong Jack Man, he began to incorporate Boxing techniques into his fighting method. Oakland student Leo Fong was an amateur boxing champion and after Bruce told him about the fight with Wong Jack Man, Fong encouraged Lee to incorporate boxing punches and angular attacks to his fighting method. A day after this discussion, Leo went to James Lee's home and found Bruce working on hook punches in James' garage. Six months later, Bruce called his "new" art Jeet Kune Do. Bruce then added Fencing (e.g., Lee's brother Peter was a Hong Kong fencing champion) to the JKD structure and his students from the L.A./Chinatown period reaped the rewards of this inclusion. The forward lunge, broken rhythm, steal a step, and the Hammer Principle became staples of Lee's fighting method.

What gets me bis that years gone by in interviews that both joe and chuck norris did alone they would both very much imply that they were better than bruce and on another level to bruce just because they competed, especially chuck who has claimed in the past that he and bruce had never soarred and didnt want to go there because hey i was the world champion, i was a professional. yet other people have said that Bruce habitually sparred with everybody he trained with because bruce absolutely loved sparring and knew it was extremely important part of training, it has been said by at least one person who was himself a former world karate champion that bruce sparred with all of us including chuck and joe, and we couldnt touch him, Bruce was too fast and too powerfull. and certain individuals are in denial especially since bruce isnt here to put them strait

MANY OF US NOWDAYS EITHER WE ARE ARTIST, MUSICIANS, WRITERS, CINEMATOGRAPHERS WE KEEP RECEIVING HATE FROM THE MASS HATE BECAUSE TRUTH ALWAYS BLEEDS AND LEAVES A SCAR IN THE SOFT TISSUE ... Lewis is being diplomatic in this interview: Joe Lewis, won more titles in his 17-year fighting career than any other tournament fighter. He went on to become the 'Father of American kickboxing'. Lewis said of Bruce Lee (having trained with Lee for over 2 years) ; "On K1- the Jeet Kune Do guys would get SLAUGHTERED if they competed even on a lower K1 level , such as the elimination K1 fights. What the K1 fighters do, especially their 'cut kicking' skills, what you may call inside/outside leg kicks *would totally dominate what is done in 'classical JKD'* ." So much for Bruce Lee's teaching strategies, which changed every other month.

New evidence shows Bruce Lee destroying a heavyweight champion in a match. In those days, a sparring match was essentially a fight where the tougher opponent shows mercy on the one who is losing. I took martial arts in the 70's. I seen brutal spar fights where people got their nose broke. Their arm broke. In the old days, sparring meant fighting until someone gives up. They quit doing that in the 80's due to the number of law suits.

Thank you for this upload. I have not seen this one before. I can say one thing, does anyone know anybody that would take the time, energy and expense to be taught by someone beneath them in their craft or skill no matter what that craft or skill is? I'm sure Bruce is sad that some that he taught don't want to give him credit for being the ultimate martial artist who ever lived and taught the best at that time but somehow these same people, after Bruce's death will come out to deny it. Jim Kelly, rest his sole, a champion says he knows who Bruce sparred with, he won't name names because he has the highest respect for them and Bruce was untouchable. It's not hard to guess who they were. Ask yourself, how many champions trained with Bruce. That's your answer. Dan is one of the inner circle with Bruce. He most likely knows as well but he won't say as well. What I learned from Dan in this interview is how Bruce viewed Norris as only a touch Karate guy and not someone like Lewis. Touch karate or pillow fighting is what it is. It's all BS. That's why Bruce's choice was Joe Lewis. The biggest mistake Joe Lewis ever made was to not accept the role Norris took in Return of the Dragon. Without that, Norris would only be a blip.
@miesvaillanykyisyytta3252
@miesvaillanykyisyytta3252 2 жыл бұрын
Norris may not have fought full contact but unlike Bruce he did fight and records seem to indicate that there was full contact involved with a fight being ended by a throw. He was also the first westerner to reach a certain rank in taekwondo, had a brown belt in judo and later went on to become a very advanced BJJ practitioner. Any of Norris' achievements alone places him well above Lee in terms of official qualifications. Bruce had no belts, no competition record and learned the largely ineffective wing chun for some time. He also supposedly tried to incorporate fencing strategy into unarmed fighting, which does not seem to have been supported by anyone before or after. Maybe Bruce was such a great athlete that he would beat Norris regardless but that would not be because of their skill because back in his prime Norris had more proof of his skill than Bruce and while Norris is an old man today he has easily surpassed Lee in grappling as well although we do not know if Bruce would have learned that as well.

Inosanto has said that lee was the fastest person hes ever met and the strongest for his size, and sparring him was like a bad dream. Lee constantly talked crap about point fighting yet point fighters like norris and lewis didnt challenge him but rather studied under him. It was only after lees death that they started to unashamedly say lee wasnt a fighter. Edit: regarding the fencing stance - i guess you mean it is not a good stance so lees style wasnt good? But he also used savate knee stomps which took mma 2 decades to mainstream, so does that mean lees style was good? Why discount lees private sparring and ability in striking but praise chucks private ability to grapple? Its lke saying that if lee could beat up pro fighters 20 to 50lbs bigger in his backyard, that is less significant than a 70 year old getting a bjj black belt without any serious competitive rolling. I think Dan may have gotten his butt whooped by Bruce a few times in sparring, and Dan was being very honest and open about it, where Joe might have taken his honest opinion about Bruce to his grave with him. I'm not saying that I think that Joe secretly whooped Bruce in a sparring session (although, MAYBE it could have happened). MAYBE they "lightly" sparred, and maybe they didn't, but I get the impression from Joe that MAYBE they did do some kind of "live" training together, and maybe Joe wasn't super impressed, and maybe out of respect to Bruce and his family, Joe just "bit his tounge" (he chose not to say anything publicly), and I really DOUBT that Joe would of "bragged till the cows came home" if he ever really did whoop Bruce in a sparring session, I think Joe was way too respectful to Bruce to ever do something like that.

I think it’s John Little who’s the “official” biographer and custodian, and he decides what goes out and what doesn’t John Little is a talented writer, but his hagiography of Lee (and to his other idol, Mike Mentzer), borders on homoerotic worship at times For example. Mr. Little captions a picture of Mr. Mentzer reading a newspaper describing how Mr. Mentzer reads to stay informed about things outside of the gym! Further on, he talks about Mentzer reading Kant and Descartes. It’s the not-too-subtle implication was that the other elite bodybuilders of Mentzer's era were stupid. Also, Mr. Little gushes about Mentzer's good looks more than once episode and how that was a first for a professional bodybuilder. Serve Nubret was well known in his home country for his appearance, and Steve Reeves was regarded as extremely good-looking in his prime! The same with Bruce Lee-anything that doesn’t show Bruce as a superman won’t be published

the DUMBEST comments are the ones where people chime in and say they "heard" Joe Lewis said this or that........ since the late 60's - and early 70's until the rise of the internet in the mid to late 90's, people generally spread 100's of rumours about who beat Bruce Lee, especially the main fighters on the world stage when Bruce was alive. the BEST comments are the ones from the martial arts legends themselves. Since the earliest days of martial arts Internet forums, I've not seen ONE video, oral recording or written articles by the likes of Joe Lewis, Jim Kelley or Bob Wall etc where they brag they could or did beat Bruce. The overwhelming majority of first hand accounts from these early legends themselves are very clear. Bruce Lee was the very best and no-one could hold a candle to the man himself. That's saying something, especially coming from the likes of Joe Lewis, a man who was world karate champ, the worlds first professional karate champion and the worlds first full contact fighting champion....he'd know, he was one of the very best. He'd know who'd be able to knock him out,....trained fighters like Joe and Jim know how good a person's skills are after the first few sparring sessions..... Bruce was the man, he was the best. There's nothing worse than people claiming they could beat, or even DID beat a legendary superstar fighter.
