You forgot one important thing about Van Buren. Eight years later he ran for president again, this time as a third party candidate. He bombed, but his candidacy was the deciding factor in the election of Zachary Taylor!

Well, Taylor did run as a moderate, and War Hero, and keep in mind he was also old, had a Democratic Vice President, and Whigs tended to use Congress over the President to get things done. Aka the opposite of Andrew Jackson

Dutch Americans are Americans of Dutch descent whose ancestors came from The Netherlands in the recent or distant past. Whether intentional or not, they usually maintain connections with their Dutch heritage, by having, for example, a Dutch surname or belonging to a Dutch community group. Dutch settlement in the Americas started in 1613 with New Amsterdam, which was exchanged with the British for the current Suriname at the treaty of Breda (1667) and renamed New York City. The British split the Dutch colony of New Netherlands into two pieces, and named them New York and New Jersey. Further waves of immigration occurred in the 19th and 20th centuries. According to the 2013 American Community Survey, an estimated 4.5 million Americans claim total or partial Dutch heritage. Today the majority of the Dutch Americans live in Michigan, California, Montana, Minnesota, New York, Wisconsin, Idaho, Utah, Iowa, Ohio, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania.

What is your evidence that Van Buren feared controversial decisions and just wanted to be reelected? He chosed not to interfere in the economy during the panic of 1836 because he believed in small government. This seems to me like a very controversial decision which may have ruined his reelection. If he wanted to be reelected, he would probably adopt a left-wing economy policy with government interference and make debt to help the poor.

@@mmjahink Sure he has his flaws, but Murray Rothbard's reasonings were at least logical; you downplay the significance Van Buren had in forming the Democratic Party and thus the modern political party system. From the War of 1812 up until Van Buren's presidency, it was a one party federalist state. He established Jeffersonian practices again, and decentralized a lot of the travesties that the Monroe admin did (big government, central banking, high taxes/tariffs, etc.). There is absolutely a case for Van Buren.
@mmjahink
@mmjahink 11 ай бұрын
@@HaveButOneLife Never said there wasn't a case for extolling Van Buren's Presidential accomplishments, I said the OP didn't explain his reasoning. Just said "it's biased" and left it at that. At least you had the decency to make a case. Personally, I would rank Van Buren somewhere in the middle, certainly not near the bottom.
@HaveButOneLife
@HaveButOneLife 11 ай бұрын
@@mmjahink Point is is that you wanted reasoning and he didn't respond, so I did. If nothing more than a retelling of Rothbard's thoughts. Most people in the comments here are saying he was one of the worst, which is silly.
