In this video, we explore the effect of mash length on the original gravity of a beer. We conduct a 75-minute mash and test the gravity every 15 minutes. In the future, I would like to follow up with a video where we mash one brew for 20-30 minutes and another until full conversion is achieved using an iodine test. We would then ferment the brews side by side and conduct a blind tasting once they are ready. If this idea interests you, please let us know in the comments below.

Very good video. I have seen a few experiments of shorter mash and getting most of the way to a target gravity. I have myself pushed it way beyond that trying to get a target didn’t my inefficient days.

Great video Paul, the results were about as I expected. The conversion is very similar to the IBU's from hops based on boil times. One future experiment for you guys...side by side of a batch with milled vs. unmilled grains just for the FuF sense of it...I could see Brad forgetting to crush grains on his brewday!

Not a bad idea, I am kind of curios as to how much if any conversion we would get from whole grains. Cheers!

Hi Paul, love your channel, very informative. Looking at making one of those recirculation thermometers you use. As such, what parts make it up please? I'm located in Australia so can get Kegland Stuff pretty easily so hopefully that helps.

Wow! 1.071 for only 10.5 pounds of grain!

That was without sparging. I sparged afterwards just to see what the actual OG would have been and it was 1.050. Cheers

I like the flexibility of your DIY return hose. Did you use two cam lock fittings and a short section of silicone?

It's actually the recirculation arm from a Grainfather that we slapped a camlock fitting onto so we could use it on the Brewzilla. To build something similar you could use a camlock e, short piece of silicon tubing, camlock c. Cheers

How much stirring are you doing? Very 15 minutes and always recirculating, correct?

Hello, yes the pump was recirculating the entire time. After each sample I took I stirred the mash for about 20-30 seconds. Cheers!
