Here's a great base schedule of how to divide your time when giving a massage. Shows the areas I choose to focus on and which areas I tend to brush over in a full body session.

I've been an MT for 17 years and this is pretty much the same exact breakdown that I do. I've also found that if it you get those clients that LOVE extra feet, neck & head work (and there are LOTS of them) they'll be your clients for LIFE.

I have been trained on trained on a British system which consists of 5 minutes per part (Chest, arm, arm, stomach, front of leg, front of leg,back of leg, back of leg, and both buttocks), then 20 mins for the back. At this point the client is asleep or comatose. Thank you for your excellent videos.

I was taught 20 minutes on the back including the glutes, 3 minutes on each legs with glutes, 1 min on each foot, 2 minutes on face and scalp, 10 minutes on the neck, 3 on the arm, 1 on the hand, 2 on the torso, 3 on the leg, 1 on the foot. Personally, I never do this. I usually have clients tell me they don’t like the torso done at all or want extra scalp and face and feet, so I usually take from the arms and do the neck work with the face and scalp, or back. I think it’s really hard to think of body parts as separate when I can flow into each one easily.

The head and neck, it's like a mother caress, very comforting. I remember that summer, I had a thing for head massage and I would stop at random hair salon for a shampoo only, just to get a head massage and my hair cleaned at the same time. I prefer more time on the feet though. I remember my first massage, I was 9. When she got to my feet, I freaked out because that area was, along with the neck and armpits, a perfect target during tickle battles, but it felt so good at the same time, I told her it gave me chills to my brain lol. But it's really my trip to Thailand that got me hooked to foot massage. I would get a 30 minute foot massage at the end of the day, it was so affordable. I'm not sure I 100% believe in reflexology, but foot massage has something special to me and it's hard to describe the feeling it creates to the whole body when they hit the right spots, it's like magic, glitters, an electric highway, my wig fly into some unknown dimension...

thank you so much! this is extremely helpful. I just started my career as a LMT and seem to always go over on hour long massages. I do like that when you flip the client over you start back at their feet again. that makes more sense to me than the way we learned at school. we also didn't learn head massage so that's something I find myself needing to incorporate more.

I agree with the timing of working on various areas however I prefer to do it in a different order. I usually start with the client on their back, I prefer to do face/head massage before I get any lotion/oil on my hands (I have no sink in my room) and I like to start out doing some LDT to the sinuses and neck/shoulder work in this position also. I do enjoy your videos though, as I feel that even someone who has been doing massage for awhile (like me!) can learn new things, we all have specific skills and gifts and thank you for sharing.

For me one hour is too little time to do a full body massage. I need at least 90 minutes to not feel I need to rush things. And as a foot reflexologist I can tell you not everybody likes their feet to be touched! I always check before the massage what the client likes and needs, so I don't have to guess. If they don't know, I decide for them based on what they tell me how they feel. My regular clients book often book 90 or 120 minutes massages. But in the end all therapist are different, I'm not saying you should change anything about your routine :).

Same. It’s so weird having just 50 minutes(massage hour) to do a massage. I feel like I’m rushing and I feel like the area I’m working isn’t getting enough attention .

My school taught us to begin our 60 minute routine with the client supine, starting at the head. We included a face massage and an abdominal massage too. They had us do some assisted stretching in that time as well. What are your feelings on all that? The main reason I’d choose to start supine is to get the abdominal work over with sooner in case they have to use the restroom or something. How often do you even work the abdominal area in your practice? I’m new to this so any LMT with thoughts will be appreciated.
@Thinthapthai
@Thinthapthai 5 жыл бұрын
Not a lot of people like Abdominal works. Most clients want to relax and abdominal is not as relaxing. I also start my clients face down. The more you work on clients you will gain your own style.
@amyaurandt26
@amyaurandt26 4 жыл бұрын
I usually do abdominal only on request, I am comfortable with it but you can't rush it for it to be effective and most people would rather have focus on other areas instead. I do abdominal area mainly for lymphatic drainage and abdominal massage for things like constipation or irritable bowel, or as part of treating issues with the back (just to have a complete approach) clients have told me it does help.

I am lucky enough to have my own practice. I refuse to do 60 minute unless it is chair because to me it isn't enough time to do things RIGHT. I do an over all body to warm things up (along with table heater) and then I get into their complaint areas. I make sure head, hands, hips and feet are done well, then shoulders and back. Abdominal only if they need and want it.
