yeah I thought I had a rear main seal oil leak. My 90 Silverado lost almost all the oil from work to home in 6 miles. My Toyota dealer mechanic neighbor said, "you might have got lucky, it could be the oil filter housing gasket." I thought it was just a gasket and didn't realize that hard brittle O-ring was an O-ring. I thought it was a piece of metal. So don't do what I did.. change only the gasket .. so I had to take it off again to install the O-ring.. and I wish I had taken a video of it too. I had driven around with an oil leak for 5+ years.

I think mine was leaking for a while also. I started to notice an oil burning smell one day and found oil all the way down the underside of truck and spots on the back of the tailgate. When I started it up that day it proceeded to empty the rest of the oil on the ground. I fixed the leak and changed the oil and filter. There was only a quart or so left in the engine. Now I don't have that small spot of oil under the truck where I park it. The problem went from a spot on the ground to a severe oil leak in one day.

My 1993 GMC pick-up has had a small leak for a couple of years that I pretty much ignored. Today my oil pressure dropped to zero. Fortunately I had two quarts of oil handy and figured I was good to go, but I was wrong. Six miles later the oil pressure was down to zero again. I has a massive oil leak. Bought five quarts of synthetic oil at a gas station (all they had $$$) and I was good for about 15 miles. Bought 4 more quarts at another gas station for the 4 miles home. Hopefully you video just saved me a lot of money. Thank you!

I hope it helps. When it happened to me the oil was just pouring out of the filter adapter in a steady stream and most of the oil would drain in a matter of minutes. good luck!

@@mikesworld60 Just crawled out from underneath and looks like the gasket(s) failed. It’s currently snowing here in Michigan and I’ll be working outside. I’m going to try leaving the driveshaft and lines attached if possible. At 69 I’m too old for this. Thanks again!

Very informative video Mike. Thank you. My son's 1998 K1500 Silverado 5.7 is leaking oil from the two oil cooler lines so I need to replace those. While I'm at it I will also replace the filter adapter o-ring and gasket because those are probably shot also. Your video showed me that I can just leave the oil lines attached to the filter adapter and then when it is unbolted and pulled down it will be much easier to remove the oil lines. Different from your 1993, on his 1998 there are two small spring clips that must be removed to remove the oil lines from the adapter and just unbolting the adapter first will make removing those spring clips much easier. I can also install the new oil lines and spring clips to the adapter first and then bolt the adapter back to the engine. Will be much easier rather than trying to get those little clips back in place with the adapter on the engine. I also plan to use the Fel-Pro ES72671 gasket kit like you did. Thanks again.

One thing, I learned the hard way to NEVER seal a gasket or o ring with grease. They will stick so bad that you have to almost grind them out. Same thing with oil filter gaskets. Use good removable gasket sealer or plain oil film.

Thanks for the video. I was doing that job today but am having the darndest time getting the new flat (paper) gasket to stay in place working underneath (did not remove crankshaft, no lift/pit). Old gasket was gone (completely disintegrated) years ago. Just a bit of baked on residue, otherwise nothing left of it. Working underneath in cramped conditions, I cannot get the flat gasket to stay in place. Replaced the O ring of course. How vital is it to replace the flat paper gasket (a five cent part that will probably self destruct again in a couple years time)? I haven't had one in probably over a decade and only had a minor leak, presumably from the failed O ring. Thanks for any advice.

I put a little grease on it so it would stay up there. I think I mention it in the video. Thanks for watching!

@@mikesworld60 Yes, that might work. Also, how about using some Permatex gasket maker to hold the flat gasket in place?

I assume you want to drain the oil first before doing anything. About to do mine over the weekend.
@mikesworld60
@mikesworld60 Жыл бұрын
You can drain the before or after. The only oil that will come out is the oil in the filter and the lines. When the engine is running, and you have bad seals it kind of drains itself. New filter and oil when your done and you're good to go.

The only two parts I removed to get more room was the front drive shaft and the brace that bolts onto the bell housing.
