Thank you for this video. I'm going to practice these techniques, but I have a question.... Does this counterbalancing maneuver this still work if your bike is over 700 pounds, but you only weigh 125 lbs? Am I going to have enough body weight to keep it from falling? I am very comfortable riding, but not comfortable making a tight turn (especially left) out of a crowded gas station or anywhere where there are other cars and people.

This is an excellent video for a beginner! I took a 2 day MSF course a couple of weeks ago, passed the written, but didn't make it through the first day of the riding skills. I was on a Honda Rebel and I couldn't hold the clutch in as I'm short with extremely short hands. I've passed the DMV permit exam so am practicing just what you've been showing. I'm on a smaller bike with a loser clutch, easier to handle. Oh, and I'm older than the average student! Nearing 70, next year... but I'm determined to get my license, so I can ride in the back country roads, or side streets, not on freeways. Great video! Thanks!

I did it! I'm just as aged as you. If I can do it, you can too. I also rode the Rebel. I'm also short. I, fortunately, passed the riding exam. This was a great video. The instructors in my course taught pretty much the same thing. Good luck to you!

Man, I can't explain how much this video helped me. Actually let me explain: U-turns were my worst nightmare when riding. I always had the fear of losing balance and dropping the bike when attempting a U-turn. Then I came across your video. Then I pulled my balls together and took my bike to a nearby empty parking lot. Then I instantly decided to go slow and do the weight shifting to the other side when controlled speed with the rear break. And voila! It works! Now I just practice it daily and master this skill. As exaggerated as it may sound, this video actually made my U-turn fear monster go away.

Very important technique for safe riding! I learned this about 35 years ago from an old 1950's motorcycle book in germany. It's called "Drücken" here, that basically means pressing. In the 80s it was considered unsafe for avoiding obstacles, but it safed me from crashing several times.

@TopsailBound: I added some foam (the ones to hold the water temperature in the heating tubes - to avoid some fear of spoiling sth. on the bike*), but the most important exercise was to begin with a comfortable radius and practised that for a while. First I tried to become too close too early. I became confident, and THEN I drew the circle a bit closer, step by step. With 69yo it takes a little longer, so what? * I take them off, whem I.m back, and use them only during the practise I am not as far as in the vid to turn on a bistro table, but better than before. To countersteer with the body is a lifelong everyday exercise (for me). Before I start my trip, I go to some outer streets (not to disturb neighbours) and ex. some weight-on-off--forward-bw-slow-very slow- throttle-clutch-game and so on). It feels good!

Excellent video. I am a returning rider getting back after 30 years of driving cars and recently tried a left U turn on my brand new bike and tipped it over and onto the tarmac. I did all the mistakes that this guy shows and now I know why I couldn’t execute the turn. Hope to do it next time

Eddie, I went out this morning to practice u turns... found your advice on looking where you want to go was the best help. In just a few minutes I was making idle speed turns, no brakes, within 3 parking spaces... I think that's like 24 ft. I have a BMW r1100RT...Next practice session will be u turns from a stop. Thanks for the great instruction.

An excellent tutorial! I have been riding in India since 1992. Moved to the UK in 2003 and did not ride (in UK) till 2012. I did my Direct Access Scheme and then got my full UK motorbike license. I wish I had seen this video before I had my part 1 test. I love the detailed way of explaining things including the physics, the repetition of the technique as well as finally demonstrating the whole technique. An important mention about the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) was my best highlight! Being an Emergency physician since 2005, working as a Doctor on racing tracks as well as being a rider myself, I cannot stress on the benefits of good quality PPE. I have seen racing riders crash quite badly, but walk out due to their good quality PPE and at the same time I've seen riders have a simple slide and end up with serious injuries due to the lack of quality PPE! I'm now definitely going to try this when I have time to get on my bike! Well Done and please keep up the quality teaching.

Best advice ever , it took my fear away for 16 ft right hand u turn , what a magical solution. body , head and bike in sequence. Many motor officers yell at students head and eyes but without proper body position head and eyes specially at slow speed is impossible to achieve for regular riders. Thanks a bunch for the best tip ever

Once gave a girl her 1st lesson in riding a bike. Little sister of a classmate of my bro. She had her car liscence for more than a year. But noone in her family rode a bike. (this is about how much appreciate riding slow skills) : I chose a gravel way with large potholes. Shortly after we had some heavy rain. Some 33ft down that way was a crossing with a huge puddle. And promised her to make a turn around that without putting her feet down in less than 1 hour. She nodded at me, saying: "You're crazy!" So I had her sit on my bike (BMW R 75/5 with the old Avon fairing, weighting 25kg, lasting on mostly the front wheel.) 1st lesson: motor off. I pushed the bike down that way. Her, concentrating on how to steer the bike through potholes on slippery surface. 2nd lesson: I showed her how to kickstart the bike, holding on to the handlebar. 3rd lesson: I told her how to shift into 1st gear only. Use the clutch to get going. And, very important: "If this thing gets outta control for you: (breaking on wet suface needs some skills) PULL THE CLUTCH! If it's getting you confused: pulling the clutch will stop acceleration. The motor might blow if you still twist that throttle. But you will not crash into a ditch with an accelerating bike." (She was always in control. Never needed to do this.) Safety first. Almost at walking speed. I ran down the way. Right next to her. Controlling the speed just with the throttle was her lesson. 4th Lesson: shifting into 2nd gear while riding. And shifting back down before the puddle. By that time, she was so used to the former basics that she easily managed that point, too: a close u-turn around a puddle on a dirt road, riding a dresser (or bagger): a street bike. In riding school, her bike then was a BMW R45 without a fairing: she reported to me: "That was sooo easy! I was able to do everything with that little bike!" This was back in the late 80's. You might see how much slow riding skills have always a huge point to me. Still today: coming on to red lights, if noone behind me to annoy, I try to go as slow as possible. It simply is training your feeling of balance with a bike. I think it's priceless. Thank YOU again for such a great tutorial!

"You gotta stop worrying about dropping the bike. Get some crash guards and then practice." This. This is what (returning to riding) noobs like me need to hear. Make sure your machine is protected and stop worrying about screwing up. You're gonna screw up. You're gonna drop it as you practice. Learn from it and get better. Frustration today might save your life tomorrow.

I can't get over the fact you can get a license in some countries without acquiring all techniques needed for real life SAFE driving. I love your videos and it's awesome you help so many people improve their driving and become safer drivers but you should look into the Dutch motorcycle lessons and exams needed for the license. It covers everything from u turn, figure 8, driving at walking pace up to high speed breaking, emergency evasive manoeuvre, emergency stop and much more. The license requires 3 exams, 1 theoretical and two practical, only after you passed the first exam (vehicle control) are you allowed to go for the second exam (traffic participation). I love to drive but I have to admit I have grown to accustomed to my countries flat well maintained and well regulated roads that the condition of the roads and the traffic abroad intimidates me. Love your videos, maybe check out some things about Dutch motor cycle exams, might find some nuggets to add to your collection! Keep making your lovely content and drive safe!
