A few small tips that have helped me are firstly to have an area with strong angled lighting to flash what you're clear coating into, this will help you pick up on uneven spots. For the axle re-rounding, try using the ball end of the hammer gently to get a nice, even round finish. Great video and thank you.

As all we Matchbox collectors know, Matchbox used stickers as opposed to water decals, so this restoration detail of yours is truer to the original. On another note, good job on this particular model!

Oh, man. I had a car like that. And trucks like that too. I loved them. Happy to see this restoration.🚑 Back up the spray when you clear coat...too close makes it glop up. And nail polishes come in a million reds, yellows, silvers & look more like plastic & glass & metal than pens. The brushes are very tiny as well. Great for detail work.

Wow, fantastic job. I would suggest that for the future when it comes to decals you place them on the model before you add a clear coat, as it will give those decals a much longer life on the model.

Looks good, I am happy that you were wearing gloves during the paint stripping process. You might want to consider using a little machine oil on the drill bit when making the hole for the screw and also on the tap when making the threads. Once I did that while building things from metal i broke far fewer drill bits.
@MatchboxRestoration5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the advice concerning the drilling. I'll keep it in mind on my next restorations. I don't take any risk with the paint stripper, I even wear protective glasses when applying it. Thanks for the input!

Very nice...looks better in the white you chose than the off white. Dinky also used off white on their ambulance models and they were almost yellow. Your scheme is far better. I might have tried to get a replacement screen rather than stick with a cracked ond but at least yours is authentic. Excellent restoration.
@MatchboxRestoration5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words, Derrick! You're right about the window unit, it looked okay but after I took it out, I noticed the crack. It's not glued, so I might replace it with a new one sooner or later.

Thanks for uploading the video. Nice that there is still a new restorer on You Tube. Good job. This S & S Cadillac Ambulance has been "My all time favorite" since 1965. (Then I was 3 years young) My mother had to buy the model several times (broken by falling in the staircase, lost, etc). Today I own this model mint boxed in all box variants with decals and stickers, as well as in the (meanwhile) rare Superfast version. I've always wanted to know how this Cadillac Ambulance is built inside, and what the plastic part of the red lights looks like. Thanks to you, I know it now. I love Matchbox models until today. For windows, you might also try micromesh, which is a kind of superfine washable emery cloth - you can get a sample pack of all the grades for under ten pounds/euros. Similar, but cheaper still are the rectangular foam blocks sold for polishing fingernails, which have four grades of very fine abrasive. You can get those in any shop that sells women's beauty products.

Matchbox Restoration Mother’s Aluminum Polish (it’s a paste in a plastic jar) will do wonders for your glass/windows followed by the floor shine dip (the trick is to dip it in the floor shine, set it on a lint free paper towel or butcher paper and cover it with a glass or jar for 24 hours, the cover keeps lint off and allows it to dry). Wet sanding and nickel electroplating are your friend too. I have to throw in the final part, lose the looping music, we’d rather hear your tools and narration. Good luck on your channel. New subscriber from Far Northern California.👍

Hello, nice job! I just subscribed! You’ll get better results using a polishing wheel on the windshields. The wheel you’re using is a buffing wheel and will keep your windows dull and more or less could burn into the plastic! You’ll see a big difference in the shine!

More nice work. Would prefer to get actual decals than stickers but that is how it probably came. Same with the lesser detailing of the finer chrome. You don't want to mess up the finish coat even with a very fine brush.

clear coat can be tricky for sure and the only advice I can give is do it slowly in layers and make sure it is not to thick in the airbrush, very lightly sand between layers for a shiny result. If you are looking for decals as opposed to stickers there are lots of aftermarket decal kits for model cars, ships, and planes out there Just google BNA Models and you will find some. I don't restore matchbox cars myself but scratch build 1/200 scale RC ships in super detail, however you never know where you will get some model technique ideas so I have been watching a lot of these car make overs of late. Oh one final thing stop using the buffing wheel as it will not shine the plastic and you risk burn through, use a polishing wheel... I gather others have already said this..... Happy modeling :-)

'Autosol' metal polish works well on plastic - either the 'metal' or 'aluminium' can be used. They are paste not liquid. Liquid polish will not remove scratches. The 'metal' polish is grittier and will take out bigger scratches. The aluminium polish is finer. Get both at your local hardware store.

Netjes gedaan, wens je veel plezier met deze hobby. Ik zelf beleef er ook een heerlijk tijd verdrijf aan, kleine tip misschien, om de wielen op te frissen gebruik ik een zwarte permanent marker. groet Hans

Great work , looking forward to the next one , By the way what make of paints are you using ? Regards, Tim.

Thanks! More coming soon! I'm using Tamiya Acrilic paints. As I'm new to airbrushing, I can't really compare it to other paints.

Is it just me, or are the front window supports bent?
@MatchboxRestoration5 жыл бұрын
They aren't bent, it's just the way they are. But I understand why you think so 😉

Are the front windscreen pillars bent? Looks like the roof was crushed above the windshield. That would be an interesting exercise in panel knocking.

When starting this restoration, I was thinking the same. But after researching the model online, I found that the pillars look like that in the casting.

You guys must be youngsters. Most cars of that era had A pillars that looked that way.
