Marty's Matchbox Makeovers

This model was a steal at $1 AUD. I had to get a reproduction horse and drawbar but the end result speaks for it's self. This 1953 model is going to make a fantastic addition to my Matchbox collection!

As far as imperfections in the detail paint, the original toys were sent out to housewives, etc. who did the detail painting by hand. So, I am sure the results varied quite a bit from model to model. Glad to see you back and I will be looking forward to seeing more from you.

Marty nice to see you back. love the model. A side note: This is a hint I got from my grandfather nearly 40 years ago. Those side cutters you use to cut the axles, to keep the bit you cut off from going sproing and shooting across the room. Take the cutter and use some tape on the handle to keep them closed. Then take some silicone (I use clear but it doesnt matter) and fill the cutting head area and let dry. Once dry, remove the tape and use a razor blade to cut the silicone down the center so you can open the jaws. Once done you will have a cutting cutting edge with silicone filling the gaps. Then when you cut wires or axles, the silicone will grab the piece as you cut it, preventing it from shooting across the room. Works wonders and prevents those late night bare foot punctures. LOL

Good to see you again Marty! When soldering ya need to have more heat on the harness and buggy, without it you make what's known as a cold solder joint. You can heat it up a few times and try to reflow the solder, just add a bit more flux. I know you are worried about melting the cart but you have a bigger temp window than you think. I also think the leftover harness should have been ground off the buggy and the new one attached to the edge of the buggy. Thank you again for the videos, we've missed you!

For the raised letters for the "Pasteurised Milk", Marty, try looking up the "dry-brushing" technique. It's what I used to use to highlight details and instrument panels on my model airplanes 30+ years ago.

2022 surely is going to be a fantastic year because Marty´s calming voice is out there again. But (and I don´t want to spoil your enthusiasm) did you really not notice that the draw bar has to be attached straight to the cabin? You should have ground off the remains of the old bar so that it is in line with the underside and the front wheels can touch the ground

VERY happy to see a new excellent video from you, Marty! It really is good that you have the time to get on with your hobby and share some of the process with us, thanks! I had a thought about the soldering that might be worth some testing for you: it might be a bit easier and end up looking a bit better if you were to flux the pieces you need to join, then instead of applying the solder like you are soldering wires together, cut quite short lengths of the solder and place them where as close to the join as you can (this may require holding the two parts so that the tiny bits of solder won't roll away from the join before you've heated the parts) and once the solder is placed then start applying heat. The solder should flow where you need it to when the parts are hot enough. The finished model you shared with us definitely came out great and watching the video was time well spent, thank you!
@android01978
@android01978 2 жыл бұрын
My thoughts exactly. It also looked like the heat wasn’t quite enough to make the solder flow.
@robbiemer8178
@robbiemer8178 2 жыл бұрын
@@android01978 It is probably a VERY fine line between enough heat to solder with and a puddle of melted matchbox so I am honestly impressed with how it turned out.
