H/H match update: ... ~~~Today's action: "Yesterday's" program ended in an ignominious zero-to-zero tie score, so we begin today with the tie-breaker (after Gene's little disco-dancing demo, that is), and hope that at least one of the two players will come up with a decent answer... And it's Betty who decides the game! Her match hands the champion a second victory. *Today's audience match question: "________Your Mind"* (My thoughts: Speak, Change, Make up) The celebs: Richard (Make up), Betty (Blow), Brett (Out of) The choice: Make up The answers: Change, Make up, Blow Well, $250 is a heck of a lot better than a kick in the teeth as they used to say, and it sure beats the audience match fail from last time. Now we get to see who our champion will choose for a partner in her first head-to-head question. (I imagine it'll be Richard. She called on him for the first suggestion both days and took his suggestion both days.) And I guess Gene had the same thought, because he said she was going to pick Richard before she said it! (That's never happened before!) King Richard's new streak is now at three. His prior streak of 70 consecutive H/H attempts ended in episode 1200 when Betty was called on. Before her, the last celeb other than Richard to answer a H/H was Fannie back in episode 1132. Stats: Richard has matched 158 of his 362 most recent attempts (43.6%), 97 of his last 222 attempts (43.7%), 50 of his past 114 attempts (43.9%), 36 of his past 87 attempts (41.4%), and 19 of his past 45 attempts (42.2%). His overall success rate is *42.4%* and this is his 840th attempt so far. For the sake of comparison: Bill Daily has matched 2 out of his 3 attempts (66.7%), Betty has matched 19 of her 39 attempts (48.7%), Charles has matched 34 of his 70 attempts (48.6%), Richard has matched 356 of his 839 attempts (42.4%), and Brett has matched 30 of her 71 attempts (42.3%). Sarah Purcell hasn't yet had a shot at a H/H question. Note: We haven't had a (successful) H/H match since last "Wednesday" (episode 1198), so I'm predicting an easier question today. *Today's H/H question: "________Roast"* (As predicted. This question does sound easy. - Pot roast - What else is super-obvious? ) Apparently something. Richard (who recently untied his tie) seems uncertain as to what to write. He's looking over at Betty's suggestion(s). Lifting his eyebrows in a questioning fashion, he writes something that sure seems a lot longer than "Pot", and then looks over at Betty yet again. He files his card, but looks less than thrilled with his answer. I still can't think of another good answer. There are comedy roasts but that wouldn't be a winner... Yeah! Our champion very confidently answers "Pot" and the audience goes wild! That's got to be the definitive answer, right? It sure looked to me like Richard wrote something longer, but I'm often wrong in my guesses. He could have written a lot simply because he wrote two answers before deciding on which one to file. Oh, I am floored! Richard actually did think of my second, long-shot idea of a comedy roast. (I swear I wrote that little thought before I saw Richard's answer!) He wrote "Dean Martin" roast. I'm not going to sugar-coat it: Richard gave a lousy answer to an easy question today which should have been a match. (Of course Richard is entitled to blow it from time to time. I've played along with every single H/H question so far, and I've come up some lousy answers despite the luxury of being able to pause the video for a few minutes to really think about it!) I wrote the above comment with the video on pause. Unpausing, I hear the audience booing loudly, so they seem to agree with my assessment of today's answer. No H/H match today. (It'll be interesting to see if the champion chooses him again next time, assuming she wins another game! My bet is yes, she will, based on all the prior champions who stuck with him after two, three, four non-matches...) ~~~Here's our updated leader board showing the 11 celebs with at least 3 H/H matches, ranked by accuracy: (An asterisk before a celebrity's name signifies that she has "retired" from the show and her H/H stats are now complete.) (For tied scores, I consider the one with the greater number of matches to be higher; if the matches are equal, the celeb who first achieved that score goes on top.) Orson Bean - 100% (4 matches in 4 attempts). TIE: (*)Jo Anne Worley - 75% (3 matches in 4 attempts). TIE: Joyce Bulifant - 75% (3 matches in 4 attempts). Gary Burghoff - 71.4% (5 matches in 7 attempts). Betty - 48.7% (19 matches in 39 attempts). Charles - 48.6% (34 matches in 70 attempts). Fannie - 48.5% (16 matches in 33 attempts). (*)Jo Ann Pflug - 44.4% (8 matches in 18 attempts). Richard - 42.4% (356 matches in 840 attempts). Brett - 42.3% (30 matches in 71 attempts). Bert Convy - 33.3% (5 matches in 15 attempts). *These stats include every head-to-head match from episode 1 through 1204, excluding the missing/damaged/unavailable episodes: 31, 32, 33, 311, 312, 313, 324, 325, 645, 910, 1024, 1025, 1026, 1027, 1028, 1029, and 1030. *Also, note that episode 849 was never produced. (These stats do, however, include the H/H results of missing episode 968 as those results were revealed in episode 969. Note: There was no H/H in missing episode 1035, as we learn in 1036.)

Charles actually waved goodbye to the guy leaving. A rarity. Dirty old man Gene all over the Mexican woman. Not sure how his wife let him get away with always fawning/touching/hanging all over the pretty contestants and panelists. Sometimes he pulls their blouses out, he did that to Sarah on an earlier show this week. Richard really falling apart. Suffering from burnout. Had his tie undone 11 minutes into the show and gave a rotten answer. He deserved to get booed. He looks half asleep. Once again the woman went with Richard for the audience match when Betty's answer got the biggest applause. You always go with the one that gets the biggest applause. But they think Richard is always right. He's not. As we saw. Twice. So she lost money.

The thing that really gets me about this is that if contestants are actually not-boring enough to choose someone other than Richard for the head to head their first go-round, if they don’t match it’s always the panelist’s fault-not a difficult question with a thousand possible answers or their own stupidity-and they 9 times out of 10 go with Richard the second time. But if they don’t match with Richard-one, two, six, 8 million times-it’s never Richard’s fault. 🙄 Like where is your brain? You recognize patterns only so far as to acknowledge that most people pick Richard? You don’t recognize the pattern that you are losing with him and maybe ought to try somebody else? Most of the biggest money winners, not coincidentally in my book, chose multiple panelists for the head to head-whoever they were particularly vibing with that day or whoever gave them the $500 super match (and they picked panelists other than Richard 1st for the super match).

I'm getting there! I do one episode a day! I'll be posting an update for this show in a few minutes! But yes, Fannie fielded a H/H question in 1127 and Betty took a turn in 1200. Other than that, King Richard reigns supreme.
