I know. Can you believe they booed when she picked Elaine... And then, of course they cheered when she won (even back then, people were two-faced)

I think Elaine Joyce was more excited about the match than the contestant! I also think the moment made this a "Gold Star" episode.

Dishwasher wasn't that stupid of an answer. In fact, I think that was a pretty good and very underrated answer because you'll never get smoke in the dishwasher (at least I don't know how).

I was on a job interview in Hollywood in 1988 at kfwb when I was 19 and that David guy walked in and sat down next to me and was gracious to my ignorance of his t.v. career. He wished me good luck. Cool guy!

Good thing they weren't overly strict about the exact match rule...because the contestant said "singles" and Elaine's card said "single" ...
@kevansf5 ай бұрын
They've matched singular and plural many times in the past for Richard in the H/H. The biggest stretch of all (so far) was in episode 470. The contestant answered the H/H: "A thousand and one." - Richard answered: "Arabian". And it was a match! - And yet, Gene persists in saying that "it must be an exact match" even though that's clearly not the case.

This was one of those give or take moments IMO. I think Richard was to a degree tryin to be playful. This was probably a bit of a continuation of what they were joking about in 1220. I think it just got to a point where they decided since Richard wasn’t always in the best of moods at this point they may as well have fun with it. He does appear to smile when the end credits are rolling.

I think I recall a documentary where they talked about being stubborn. There was some change in the game where the contestants could pick him for the bonus road and he was irked. Don't take it to the bank, working from memory

You’re thinking of Behind the Blank. It aired on GSN back in 2006. And yes there was discussion of the ‘Star Wheel’ which was eventually added so all the panelists had a fair chance of being picked for the big money round. Dawson commented that he took the wheel as a ‘direct slight’. However, the wheel was not the only thorn in Dawson’s side by that point. The wheel isn’t even in this episode yet he seems very uninterested. Family Feud was a hit by now and he simply just wanted off this show. Match Game got him on the map but the ratings were slipping, he had no control over the rules of this game, doing two shows probably got exhausting after a while, and he was hosting a more popular show. Things had run their course.

Another case of, which the same thing that happen with FF, the show is a hit, not at this point but he had been wanting out of his contacts for years by now, but what really made the show a hit, the comedy, the host and/or Richard. They just really didn't want to mess with the formula but it came back to bite them in the end.

5 years of MG, and 2 or 3 by 78 of FF, start wearing down doing so many shows a week. It sucks he left, but don't really blame him. I'm surprised he lasted this long.

What seems strange to me is the fact that both MG and "Feud" were produced by Goodson/Todman !! The story I heard most often was that Richard and the so-called "producer" of MG had a "case of the ass" for each other, (i.e. were constantly mad at each other), and that was the reason for all the discontent, which led to Richard leaving MG.
@crissrudd45543 жыл бұрын
john stewart you have to understand. Richard was hired on Match Game to be part of the panel. He had no control over how the game or show was conducted. His job was to give responses and be a funny man. After a while this likely irritated him because you have moments like the School riot incident where clearly the contestants are getting screwed out of correct matches. Richard would argue his case and get overruled unlike on Family Feud where being the host he had more authority to make corrections over certain responses. Having that freedom I’m sure added more to his desire and get off of Match Game and focus on Feud full time.
@EightCrosstown3 жыл бұрын
@@crissrudd4554 oh it got worse later. The star wheel was the last draw, for everyone picked on Richard because he got the definitive answer 97% of the time on the Audience and H2H matches. I think they wanted other ones to get involved BUT it’s not even funny. Charles is a distant second, and Brett is a long 3rd. Other celebs like Gary, Betty and Fannie might be also candidates for giving good answers in them, but more on the 50/50 range. The rest: good luck. The focus to be on, and the main purpose of, the Match Game, was to match, and to win. If Richard is the one, Richard is the one. I do agree, he wanted out to focus on Feud, and they said no. So they were not on good terms. He got through it until now after years of taping and he didn’t get a lot of rest. If they had said yes, they would have had a plethora of other celebs to go for, and Richard could have came back with a better attitude.
