I agree with Carlton here - he made the most of his ability and will never look back in anger, he achieved more than he could have ever expected. Le Tissier is like the Alan Hudsons, Frank Worthingtons, Duncan McKenzies, Tony Curries, Rodney Marshes, Stan Bowles, etc. etc. never played for big teams, never won anything but never the less entertained us all and we have good memories of them all and no doubt they are all wondering "what if my ship came in and I played for a top 4 team? What would I have achieved and what would my life be like?". Carlton Palmer over-achieved given his God given talents but Le Tissier just enjoyed being a big fish in a small pond and being hero-worshipped on a local rather than a Global scale.

It's funny, you hear pundits consistently complain that players should be more loyal to clubs, that there is no loyalty anymore. Then you hear people constantly asking players like Le Tissier and Shearer being accused of lacking ambition because they were happy playing for the team they support. Come on, they should be applauded. Le Tissier himself has said, he was just a young lad from Guernsey happy to be playing football professionally. 00:28 Carlton says that Southampton were eight points adrift when he joined the Saints. That statement is false. Carlton joined Southampton on 23rd September 1997, seven games into the season, bottom with four points, in 19th place was Sheffield Wednesday with five points. Maybe he means eight points away from safety but in 17th place was Barnsley on six points. So if Carlton's misremembering things that much, how much does that make his other comments credible?

If these comments came out of the mouth of anyone but Carlton Palmer i'd take them more seriously. He was woeful as a player and only wore an England shirt because Graham Taylor was the only person in the country that rated him! As for Le Tissier, his fitness was always questioned, for one thing he was bloody lazy by his own admission! MLT has said a number of times that he never wanted to leave Southampton because his life was in Southampton, why should he go to a bigger club when he was happy where he was - i think that's actually commendable in the modern game! Also, while a lot of other players were getting huge boot sponsorship deals Le Tissier was wearing Quasar boots - but then he could do what he does (when the mood takes him) in flip flops!

I don't think Le Tissier was that lazy. You don't score over 200 career goals at senior level and hit well 20 or more league goals in some seasons from midfield for a bottom half of the table club like Southampton... without a bit of effort. Thats unheard of. And btw most of his goals would be bloody goal of the season contenders lol.

I think he is right about me tissier.....he was unprofessional and was always overweight and didn't train properly and had no bottle to test himself at the highest level....he had no confidence in himself and wanted to play it safe at a tiny club like Southampton were he was a big fish in a small pond....Carlton Palmer was a rubbish player but is right about this and I would rather have him.in my side than me tissier because at east he always gave his all and was more consistant unlike me tissues who would give you a handful of 9 out of 10s and then several games were you had to check to see if hewason the pitch

love listening to Carlton Palmer, he says it as it is, MLT was a much better player than CP but CP maximised himself and MLT didnt. CP was also a much better than player than history suggests, he doesnt get a fair crack because he looked ungainly.

I'm not sure what game Carlton Palmer played, but it never looked the same as the one Le Tissier played. You could replace Palmer with a fence panel in most midfields, and the panel would have better touch.

Matt Le Tissier was one of the truly great players, who scored wonder goals, skill imagination, he could score from anywhere. There will never be anyone who scores as many wonder goals as Tiss. How he wasn't an England regular we will always wonder, If he was Brazilian he would have been up there with Fat Ron and Ronaldinho, Carlton lovely bloke but limited as a footballer, gave you everything but that was a lot less than Le Tiss gave.

In response to some who criticise Le Tissier... and allege that he underachieved You cannot underachieve when scoring goals regularly against top flight teams, dribbling around top flight defenders and beating top flight goalies of international standard. The goals I have seen are well up there with players like Gascoigne and frankly I was more impressed with Le Tissiers efforts. What Gascoigne did achieve is a persistence to do well despite his mental issues. All credit it him for that. The other thing I noticed about Le Tissier is a consistent lack of ego after scoring.. as if to say "well that's what I am paid to do".... despite the goal being of amazing quality and this was defined by commentators and opposing crowds being so entertained they actually clapped and cheered him.

It's true that Le Tiss did under achieve. He could have gone to a big club and been their Cantona for example. Really great player with sublime skills and scorer of some of the greatest goals of the last 35 years, but he was happy where he was; was catered to and couldn't be arsed to be continually match fit. That said Carlton or Le Tiss...c'mon...

Well no Carlton isn't as good as Le Tissier. But at the end of the day, Carlton still has a right to tell him he's unfit. I've played for teams where a player can score 30 years free kicks, but can run a lap. Matt shouldn't be ignoring his call either tbf.

Le God admitted that he was a useless trainer and being part of a football team in that area was all about teamwork, some did the running and others did not, that was commonly accepted rather than it is today with most of the teams all running with a high press closing down the opposition. Le god was an amazing footballer and Southhampton was right to play to his strengths. maybe he didn't want to go to a bigger club where he perhaps wouldn't get away with not training like everyone else. Bigger clubs did want him but he stayed loyal to Southhampton. And from sticking to his morals and principles especially during and after covid he has gained a huge following for taking a stand and walking away from lucrative contracts as a Sky pundit and speaking his truth. He most certainly gets my respect, he was a fabulous talented footballer, but and even better human being.

I'm reading a lot of comments along the lines of 'if Le Tissier was French, they'd have built their team around him and he'd have won 50 caps.' No, that wouldn't have happened. Players like Zidane, Xavi, Iniesta, Pirlo weren't just gifted players. They were also expected to work hard - and did. I don't remember seeing Zidane stroll around the field. He was a match winner but also worked very hard for his teams. Do you really think Ferguson would have said to Le Tissier: do what you like, you don't have to bother about tackling or defending? I don't think so somehow. Le Tissier knew this I think and knew a lot more would have been expected of him at a club like ManUtd. So he was never interested in leaving Southampton and no big club was ever going to sign him. Yes, I know he scored a lot of amazing goals. I believe he would have been best suited as a substitute - not a first choice - for England. If they were losing and badly needed a goal, bring Le Tissier on and tell him to have some shots at goal. With his shooting ability he could have won games for England. Incidentally, Hoddle gave him his, I think, 8 caps. But even Hoddle didn't really want him in the England team and so only occasionally picked him.
@mickheery6921 Жыл бұрын
thing is matt almost single handedly kept Southampton from relegation by being a master of goal scoring.none of those players u mention had even 50% of his skill to turn a game around. they were exceptional but matt was above that none of them ever made that much of an impact.

Better career? But who is remembered and loved. Matt Le Tissier is the best player ever to have played at his club. Others, like Lallana, Bridge, have league winner medals, European trophies, but they aren't really relevant when they retire, much like Carlton (no offence, decent underrated workhorse). Le Tiss on the other hand is football royalty. Who is successful? The ones with dusty pieces of metal in a glass cabinet or someone who lived, enjoyed football, expressed himself and was and is adored?

Obviously Matt it's way ahead of this guy (who i didn't knew until today). Now, he's not saying something that has no sense.
