This has got to be the BEST instructional video for v4 owners and DIYers. One question, does the float bowl have a drain plug? This parts list suggests that it has a drain. I have an 83 v65 that I am flushing the reerve tank with white vinegar and the carb clean up is next I what to try to flush them with carb cleaner on the bike. Totally an experiment with a parts bike. Can I drain them on the bike -- Reasonably? I ned to fill and drain about 10 times while still mounted.

The floats all do have their own drains. And you can use that to see how well your floats are adjusted based on gravity and some simple plastic tubing. I'd not recommend carb cleaner in the bowls, however, as there's little felt rings sitting behind the arm the opens and closes the throttle valve. It can potentially destroy this and allow unmetered air into your system. There's also many many rubber bits in each valve that do not take kindly to being hit with caustic solutions. Unfortunately, that's why it's best to take the carb rack off the bike and clean each carb as a single unit after striping it down.

I have been rebuilding an 83 v65 with my grandson. We took the carbs off and had to replace diaphragms. I flushed them several times with b12 but it still would not idle. The pilot jets were all plugged from sitting 9 years. Boy, you were right about those springs. We lost one of the external choke housing springs (3/8 x 1 1/8).I am hoping Grainger has some type of replacement, any suggestions? I am soaking the boots in wintergreen oil and it really works (and smells minty fresh). Your video has been our salvation. The linkages were actually the hardest part, along with remounting the carbs to the plenum. After going through the process once it all becomes a lot clearer. Thanks

Did you do a video on the float level? Do I just attach the tubing to the drain and hold it vertical to check the internal level? I have learned a lot in the past 5 months. Thanks

Great video! I'm rebuilding a 1984 VF500F Interceptor, has the same carb setup (for the most part). You probably saved me a little damage and profanity!

I know this is a older video BUT I need you're help if possible, so I have a 83 magna v65 and I cleaned my carbs but I didnt know about different springs or slides, is there way I can tell what slide goes where?

It's been too long since I've torn them down to really recall. BUT, if you head over to v4musclebike.com or v4hondabbs.com/ both still have very active participants that should be able to point you in the correct direction. Both groups are full of very helpful people.

I did not make one, looks like. If you're having issues getting things seated back into place, you might want to look into getting new carb boots. I always had them at about a 45 degree angle when putting everything back together so that one lip was on the engine body and one lip was on the carb body. Then you have to try wiggle things into place from both sides of the bike until it ends up being seated. It takes a lot of tries to get it right, and with old boots, something is more likely than not going to tear in the process.

It's been a number of years. If memory serves, the only thing really fixed in place was the needle jet pillar. The other jets were removable but are very very easy to damage. I replaced all of them in the end as it was cheaper and easier than cleaning them.

Unfortunately I'm not really sure. I only every dealt with the V65 and even then, most of the information I found was on hondabbs.com and v4musclebike.com. Either site can probably advise you on what you'd need to know.

Once upon a time there was a gentleman that put together a site that had the collected works of the various sellers of ebay stores all in one location. He started it somewhere in the late 90's or early 2000's. He had rebuild kits all in one place and stocked a dozen or so at a time. Sadly, given the age of the Magna's, and his own declining health the gentleman shut down the store. If you ask the folks over at v4musclebike.com or www.v4hondabbs.com/ they can likely point you toward whomever has taken up the torch for providing these kits.
