@@setnomA example of insurance in poker: you're a 77% favorite in a 100$ pot with one card to come, you then place a 10$ bet on the side against your own hand that pays out 3.4-1 if you want to break even. If the person who is offering to insure the hand wants to give you a slightly worse rate as part of the price, they can do that you just have to know how much of your equity you're willing to sacrifice.

hey i had a week in the late 90's playing 7-stud where i held aces full five times, in one week, and it held up only once, in a room with no bad beat.....idk what mike thinks but we've all had our terrible shares of these type of beats. i never lost hundreds of thousands of $'s in the process, because i'm not that rich, but i've had my @$$ brutally handed to me more times than i care to count.

@@bye692001 Oi, no need to be rude. Some people are relatively new to poker so it's not instantly obvious what the winning hand would be in a situation like this. Sound wave, to answer your question, it's because Eric Seidel also had two pair. The way poker works is you have to build the best five card hand out of seven availible cards, so three pair is not a thing. What Eric was playing was two pair: aces in his hand, and sevens on the board. Which is better than Mike's two pair: tens and eights. So since Eric had the higher biggest pair, he wins. It's important to keep in mind that just because the pair on the board doesn't have anything to do with your hole cards, doesn't mean you can't play them.

the best hand preflop winning has nothing to do with whether or not its a bad beat. Matusow was way ahead when the money went in, therefore its a bad beat

You can only play 5 out of the 7 cards available to you at the end of showdown (7 meaning the 5 on the board and the 2 in your hand), the 7 on the river meant that Seidel had the two pair AA 77 which beats the 1010 88 two pair that Matusow had.

He got emotional because of the stakes he was playing. It is easy to accept the variance when your run bad is at the level you always play. But when it comes during one of the biggest pots in your life at the worst time even if it’s karma you are only pretending if your calm.

Just a pity party. He was only a 75% favorite to win the hand.
