Linux distros such as Elive and Bodhi have given me the best experience on low powered computers. The window manager called Enlightenment is super lightweight but has a ton of special effects and any creature comforts that can come to mind.

I think you should try some display drivers on that live ubuntu mate OS, just to iron out which one to use and how to configure it before nuking the emmc. Another choice would be Windows XP or Vista

debian with i3wm/i3. Its about as light as you can get. if you can check that cpu virt extensions are enabled, i could set up an image that autoboots dos under kvm that starts in landscape mode. debian with i3 uses 200mb idles and around 800 with say a web browser open.

You should share the image somewhere, im sure there aren't many backups of working system available

Afaik there's some kernel parameter that overrides the screen orientation. You can temporarily set it in GRUB As for the distro to install, I would definitely try some phone-related distribution. Maybe postmarketos? You will definitely find helpful people there! Btw, did you check your backup is full and correct? Don't forget to copy it off of the SD card, as they like to be fiddly

8:00 and Symbian part of phone crashes as well. I had sometimes same glitch on Nokia 5228, followed by phone restart.

Maybe booting off a USB CD drive will solve some of the boot issues? Also this Atom chip probably uses PowerVR graphics which is famously terrible in Linux, you may be SOL. I don't think Imagination Technologies (creator of PowerVR) are interested. I'd probably roll with a basic debian install and a super basic desktop like i3wm on hardware like this. Even "lightweight" desktops of yesteryear like xfce and gnome2 (MATE now) kinda chug on stuff like this these days in my experience. Hopefully you can get the graphics working right and we can find out.

Wow, I don't even turn on compression when dd on i5-1035G1 computer because of slowness, and you turn on compression on an Atom with even lower frequencies.

Raspberry pi OS would be nice, its been opened up to where it can run on x86

After you showed a slow responsiveness of the Ubuntu MATE I realized this thing has a GMA600, aka *fuck you, no drivers for you in linux*. Which is probably why you couldn't run some distros (except those times when your phone ran out of memory leaving you in an initramfs shell)

Touch screen doesnt work proper because its set to xorg instead of wayland also xorg doesnt support auto rotation and proper touchscreen in tablets

As a (almost) pro in Linux, I can tell you this: good job choosing the distro, tho I would recommend Mint Mate instead it probably doesn't use acceleration at all coz you didn't install drivers yet (obviously), but if the phone uses Intel integrated graphics, then the open source Mesa drivers are pre-installed it is possible to rotate the multitouch input in the xorg.d config your CLI skills are absolutely terrible, but that's fine since you are a first time Linux user I thought that if you are a phone enthusiast that knows how to use UART you would already be familiar with Linux. Imagine still using Win98 to flash Nokias 💀

Don't worry, it's not the device's fault, everything seems to unexpectedly quit in Linux regardless of what hardware it's on. 😂
