Worker-ownership is extremely challenging but more than offset by the level of fulfillment gained from having control over the future of the business. All incentives in the world would have led Jesse to sell. Good luck to everyone as they settle in to the new structure.

Creating a board of directors is a big mistake. If you truly are an owner-employee coop have the employee/owners decide stuff. You don't need another level of abstraction.
