All three of my sons were conceived in love from this man’s music Unfortunately, their dad and I didn’t make it in life (divorced in 2014) but revisiting this song takes me back to a time when we loved, and loved hard, and made beautiful love, and beautiful babies together. I walked into a Target store in Dallas, Texas back in 2009 an asked an employee (back when they had employees to help customers...before Covid), where I could find a CD by Maxwell. The Afro-American girl was extremely surprised that a Hispanic guy even knew who Maxwell was. Maxwell is an incredible, totally underrated talent that has not been given the credit he deserves.

I met Maxwell in traffic on second avenue and Houston in Manhattan a year after this album dropped. He was in the back of a yellow cab. His afro and style of dress unmistakable, I said hey Maxwell, me and my girl love Whenever, he just stopped whatever he was doing, raised both hands and clasped them and without a word he gestured a bow. I'm a hardcore hip hop fan on the regular, with Wu-Tang, Biggie and Tupac on deck all the time... But this man, cemented my respect for him with that one tiny act.
