I absolutely HATE this washer, my clothes are not clean and I hate the lock. I disengaged it and I think I will be a little happier. AHA, I just checked and I Think I know why my clothes are not getting clean....I opened the lid and they are not agitating. I can easily put the lock back on if necessary....or I can just burn the d* thing. Thank you so much for posting.

Yay! Thank you! I've seen the video on how to get it unlocked so now we will add this step so it doesn't happen again. My laundry was held hostage after power went out today. Don't like that I never could open it anyway.

Thanks! Nice to be able to add Borax later and have it diffuse, can,t do,that when the machine is stopped. . Also, I like to "feed" big items like quilts and let the agitation distribute it evenly and gently around the drum. Thanks again!

the lid stays open a bit but no big deal. 10 years without a single problem but somehow managed to loose the latch in a pillowcase or something in the closet. without that little latch it doesn't work so just leave it in and learn how to open the lid with the pause button

just did this to a Kenmore and worked as well

I had the same problem. The lid lock assembly is broken. If you are under warranty get it replaced. If not remove the top of the washer and take out the switch assembly. The 4 wires going in are Yellow, Red, White, and Blue. If you short the white and blue together, the washer thinks the lid is closed. If you short the red white and blue together the washer thinks the lid is closed and locked. The yellow is only there to activate the electromagnetic switch. Disconnecting the switch assembly will not work. The electromagnet locks the lid and it also unlocks the lid. It is not a matter of cutting the power to the magnet.

sorry, I don't understand how this works. You don't show what the switch looks like, where to get it or how its assembled. You just show a photo of I guess that's it, but even its not a close up. So, really this doesn't help me at all. Can we get a little more detail on this.

I wish I could do that, but my Mother won’t let me, as she thinks that running the Washers with the Lid open is illegal. Basically with my Mother over Washers, she’s a big fat scaredy cat, whenever a Washer is being run with the Lid open. The Washer my Mother has currently is the Whirlpool WTW5000DW1 & it’s soon gonna be replaced with the Whirlpool WTW6120HC, in which I can then be able to see the action no matter what ‘cause of the Glass Lid it has. Heck, if my Mother had the Money in the Future for a 2ND Washer, I’m gonna have it be the Maytag MVWX655DW0 (My Mother had that Washer back in 2015, but it quickly had to be replaced with the Samsung WA48H7400AW due to it constantly acting up in either it would stop after Main Wash & refuse to drain & go into Intermediate Spin or the Water would fill all the way to the top, drain for a few minutes, then automatically cancel the Cycle with the Lid unlocked & the Wash Light on…) or if there’s a way to replace the whole top of the Washer to give it Glass Lid compatibility, I would have the 2ND Washer instead be the Maytag MVWC555DW with the Glass Lid from the Maytag MVWC450XW (The MVWC555DW has the Lid with the flat Lip & there’s no Glass Lid compatibility for it. So, if there’s a way to replace the whole top for it to have the Lid with the curved Lip, just like on your MVWC200XW there for Example to what it already has with the curved Lip Lid, it would then give it Glass Lid compatibility to swap the Lid with the Glass Lid from the MVWC450XW.).

Just be careful because the washer won't work without it. Did this about a year ago and everything was great until I allowed a friend to wash a load of clothes. Despite my warnings not to lose that piece because the washing machine wouldn't work without it, when I opened the lid, it was gone! that was a week ago. I bought a switch to try to bypass it so wish me luck...and any advice would be greatly appreciated!

It seemed too simple to work! I don't care if my washer is under warranty, it is a piece of crap I would like to use for target practice!! The fix cost nothing and the washer is as good as it was meant to be but never was. Thank-You!

i already did this but now the lid wont close all the way. anyone know if that will be an issue? This lock and the lengths they've gone to make it tamper proof are ridiculous! If your kid is that smart, Im sure he won't be jumping in the washing machine in the first place!

Much easier solution and it won't void the warranty.....Just unplug from the wall, wait about ten seconds, plug it back into the wall. Everything will reset and the lid will unlock by itself. I've done this procedure about four times in the last three months.

And it worked! Did a test run and no problem! Thank you again!

What (drill) bit do you use to remove the lock from the lid? And what about keeping the lock in place so it doesn't move and it does engage the lock? Thanks

Did this a while ago, but the switch vanished (probably the kids). Is there any way to just dummy the action of the switch in the lock?

Thank you! I've been frustrated by this "safety feature" since I've owned this thing. I didn't figure on the magnet. Now I can stare into it and watch the clothes spin. And if it's off balance, I can pause it, reach in to shuffle things around, and restart... all before it's sensors know what happened.

Well what's the solution when you destroy the mechanical components? It's no "easy jump this wire to this one and you're good to go" hack. There's a sequence of events I haven't figured out yet
