Traditionally, MX stood for "Mazda eXperiment". Naming it MX-30 makes sense, as it is Mazda's first foray into EVs and it's more of a test platform, to gauge interest and sales with minimal investment (modifying an existing platform).

I'd like to see the materials used in the interior in other non-ev models from Mazda. Also, I love that they implemented cork in the interior. They should do more heritage inspired things in their cars.

It seems like a very reasonable choice. City range, reasonable price for an EV and it looks pretty cool. I also like the fact that they didn't try to make it very futuristic but more like a current crossover. I also like the doors. Most of the people don't carpool so I find sacrificing a little bit of practicality for design, worth it.

Hope they’d make the range extender available as a post-purchase upgrade. That way, I can take the risk of less range and if it turns out to be a problem, just have the extender mounted.

Looking at the way it is integrated in the car, I somehow doubt that will be possible. Engine, air intake, filters, housing, electronics, exhaust... that's a lot of stuff to add in later. It would also require re-registration as a non-zero emissions vehicle. I honestly think you would be better off trying the EV version and trading it in for the range-extend version if you need to.

The trend in user controls is worrying; I think the best systems are those that can be operated without having to look at them. Skyactiv Mazdas started with all rotary knob A/C controls (with good haptics), at least on the lower trim models. This is what I personally think is best; they can be operated purely by feel. More recent Mazdas seem to be switching to rotary knobs for temperature and lots of haphazard buttons for fan speed, vent settings, etc. These buttons are very distracting to use whilst driving. This MX-30 now has touchscreen controls, which seems even worse.

I think the limited range and slow charging will make it hard to sell great numbers in the european/american markets. Perhaps it makes sense in Japan and other Asian countries that are so heavily urbanized. The range extender version might be more attractive depending on efficency because hybrids are already quite popular and takes away the range anxiety.

MX-30 - bright living room front interior, with nice materials but cramped looking in rear with restricted small rear side windows, and 'heritage' RX-8 doors. Perhaps limited EV range and charging is ok for a second car? But it'll soon be a very competitive market out there. Many thanks for all the usual detailed information, Team!

Mazda 2018; "We won't go electric" Mazda 2019; "We will make a hybrid electric with a rotary, with RX-8 suicide style doors and give it the MX moniker" .... Uhhh, you okay Mazda? Should have done this with the RX-8 instead maybe?

I like everything about it apart from the range. I could expect less than 80 miles in winter here (even less on winter tyres) and that’s not doable, especially as I don’t have home charging. I’d definitely look into the range extended version.. and who doesn’t like a wankel. I don’t even care about the naming, when I think of Mazda I think of the mx-5, so I can see why they went that way. I’d get one. Amazing job as always @autogefuhl 👍

All Mazdas give the Mazda experience though. Are the others designed by Subaru or something? It would be like BMW having 1 model designated "BX" (3 series as "BX3"?) but the other cars are theirs too so they would need that designation as well.

The market for this car will be in and around the City area for mainly 2 people - of course built firstly for the Japanese. I think the range extender will not be a big seller. Most people will be after a longer range from the battery itself and not buying a complicated half battery, half motor type setup. I think by the time this car comes to the market, there will already be a larger choice of fully electric cars and this Mazda will get looked over. It is at least a first step in EV's for Japanese manufacturers, albeit a slow one.

@Autogefühl But the car is displayed as an SUV so then there really is no point to have suicide doors. If a minor incident happens such as, let’s say anything then the car is not safe. If I need to run into the backseat because of something then I’m totally screwed

I don’t think Mazda should have used the letters from its sports line, it’s not a sports car it’s a crossover! They could have easily used the CX from their Crossover line for the cars ‘heritage’ it makes more sense after all it is a crossover, I would have called it the MAZDA CX E jobs a good one! Also I think the battery is too small it makes the car very limiting, but I understand it is early days, I would love to see a Mazda RX E! I love that Mazda is using recycled materials!

Maybe this is just a side project for mazda with all their new skyactiv ICE and rumored rotary hybrid going on. That being said, I like how mazda keeps their EV design familiar to their existing models. surely they needed to make the EV stand out, but are the suicide door and the roof design really necessary?

One of the best looking EV out there , that looks perfectly normal. Too bad battery tech is still lagging behind, that range makes it DOA, but is a good testing for Mazda. There is not much margin left for aging, winter losses, degradation :-(
@EdgarRenje
@EdgarRenje 4 жыл бұрын
At first the optics seemed a bit odd to me, but the more often I look at it, the more I like this individuality. I like the idea of combining the different elements of the SUV (kinda like a bigger Honda e) and the freestyle doors known from the RX-8, as well as the use of sustainable, resource-saving materials that also connect to the company's past. The grey painted extensions on the trunk lid look like eyebrows above the wonderful three-dimensional rear lights. Very interesting detail. Yes, the battery is comparatively small, but Mazda made it clear from the start that this would be a second or city car. If you look at it that way, it's very interesting. Also the price point with all modern features is well set. If you still want more range, you can wait for the range extender version. Very good job, Mazda! btw: The "MX" stands for every unusual, special cars in Mazda's lineup - just like the MX-5.

Was looking fw to this to maybe replace Kona ev in a year or two. However. Too long hood/bonnet see no need for this.. (i heard the exp but thats just stupid..)should make the car smaller if pos when going Electric. Not a fan of big paddings, should be more like cx-5. Not sure of the kork and ent, and int - but not a fan yet (dont care about sustainable - more into functional/comfort/look and feel) entertainment i guess could look more 2020, and not 2010... but classic is better then too futurestic. Hopefulli it have app, functions like start charging and cool/heating etc. Should have 20-40 hp more. Too short guestimated range. Like ‘agile fun’ tho..

I'm a big mazda fan. However, this time Mazda is making huge mistakes. The battery distance is very short and the car has the longest charging time on the market. The inefficient electric motor was the cherry on the cake. I think Mazda is in the initial stage of the electric vehicles R & D. But I liked the materials used in the vehicle. Especially the use of cork is a great idea, it looks very natural.

Thomas the insider! Always getting the low down first. But beyond this, the Mazda MX 30 = duller than my daughter red crayon. (She likes red.) Holy, no edge here. Bland profile, a front end that reminds me of every other Mazda from the last 25 yrs and a rear that just seems half baked. These stupid suicide doors that are completely unnecessary for a vehicle like this. I let my kids out on the curb side of the car. IE the opposite side of the driver's side. I might as well put a chauffeur's cap on as I would have to run around the car to let them out every time we stop. This vehicle is DOA. Just add 4-6 inches of length and normal doors onto this thing and make it infinitely more usable. Same goes for the BMW i3. Actually I'd add 10 inches onto the i3 and make the suicide doors open independently of the front doors. I'm sure the carbon fibre structure would be strong enough to achieve this.

I think this is a car that will do well in the Asian markets, but nowhere else. The design is bland and uninspiring (SUV COUPE CUV ELECTRIC HERITAGE URGHHHH!!!!), range and performance is only really adaptable to heavy urban users (without the range extender) and the competition the car faces is already truly fierce. Mazda is a fairly small volume pusher (Corolla alone outsells all Mazda models in the USA) and I think they lost a big opportunity on creating a truly elegant and sporty entry in the EV segment, something to lure not just the people that are curious about EV's but also regular consumers.

you'd be wrong about the range because that wankel engine isn't in there for nothing. You'll have to factor in the range with the added assistance of the gas motor.

Plus I don't think they have the resources for a pure EV at the moment. And there is far more demand for hybrids than a bev. It's easier for me to fill this up than to have the hassle of the wires and range anxiety of a pure electric vehicle. Many others will have similar thoughts as me in this case.
