Have to agree about most experiences with the Gardaí being very positive. Had my partner's handbag stolen in the Netherlands few years ago and must say the police there were similar, even rang us a few weeks later to check in ...

nope. Was looking forward to go from cx-5 to this car. Mazda decided to make a two seater failure. Ended up buying a Hyundai kona electric instead, with 485 km wltp, appr 420 km IRL. Compared to mx-30 offering 200 km wltp, appr 150 km IRL? Km in winter? 80 km?

As an owner of a BMW i3, those suicide doors are annoying as hell. The back seat passengers also cannot get out without the front passengers opening the door for them. The back looks very small also but if you have younger children that is ok. By having a smaller battery Mazda could make the car cheaper but I’m not sure the trade off is worth it.

I had many RX8’s and they don’t work for children from 9months up until 5 years while they should be rearward facing in their seats. How do they get into a rearward facing car seat??

Very honest of you. I was really struggling to think what the point of those doors was. Tbh the Mazda ones look even more awkward than the i3. Sure they’re cool and kinda fun, but it still seems like a crazy design choice if this car is ever intended to be bought as a family car.

Love the look of that Mazda, and the inside is fabulous. Would I swap it for my ID3 even with its flaws? No I wouldn't. Range is just to small for rural living. 330km return to Dublin means I don't have to charge the VW. Good review 👍

Bob the price of the car is EUR42K but has a EUR5K SEAI Grant and EUR5K VRT rebate making it EUR32K which is good value considering what you get(according to the Mazda Ireland website). Mazda will be adding a rotary range extender making this car go a lot longer than this model's range! Thanks for the review, keep up the good work!

Thank you Bob for yet another excellent and professional review. I really enjoyed your rapport with the Garda, who also seemed to be a fan of yours. I have tried the Mazda CX30 skyactive G 2.0 petrol in manual form and found it to be a really nice car to be in. The ‘range anxiety’ may be an issue for me in the MX30. You commented that Mazda are developing electric across the range, so is this the thin end of the wedge for petrol?

good review! I ordered one for myself! I wait for August to receive it. I live on an island and I can't imagine a better car for my needs. really, it's not all about speed or range. This is a car with an excellent value for money. I'm a little annoyed, those revues, where cars are redicuralized based on aspects that are far from defining a car by itself. hug from the Azores Portugal

Counter point to your dislike of the door system. I don’t like this type of rear door either, but that’s because I want 4 doors in my cars. However if you’re someone who likes a 2-door car, this system lets you have a 2-door without a massive door that’s tricky to open in tight spaces because it doesn’t have to be big enough on its own to give rear seat access. :) Side note. As a petrol head turned EV enthusiast, I’m glad to see the positive comments from most traditional car communities towards cars like this because the EV community generally looks down on cars like this and Honda e because of the limited practicality (range and space) for the money. There’s obviously more to a car than that.

I do like Maxda's styling, but their justification for a small battery pack is just nonsense. Just because you have a larger capacity pack, it doesn't mean you have to charge it to full. You only get the full charge speed for a certain percentage of the pack capacity, so a larger pack would most likely also charge faster up to the 30 or so kwh anyway. I think what Mazda meant to say was: we didn't really want to make an EV but we have to, so here's what we have to do. No manufacture is going to last long against Tesla, VW, KIA/Hyundai and the Chinese brands if this is what they continue to put out.
@PawelMrozik

Mazda said they'll be putting a Wankel range extender in the MX-30 in the future, which could make this quite attractive. Could this be a compliance car? Possibly, but they have to be able to sell quite a few of these to comply. Cars with bigger batteries are much heavier, and you really do feel that weight in a Kona, for example. For me, this would work for 90% of my trips, but would require extended stops for longer ones, which would not be needed in a car like the ID.3. So I'd definitely pick the ID.3 over this just to get the extra flexibility and 100kW charging.

Super review Bob, think we got a bit more of your Sunday Service personality in this. Did the Garda not know you don’t give stars? Pfft. As for the car, the doors are a dealbreaker for me but hopefully Mazda make a range of EVs with normal doors. Interior looks very lush, very Audi A8/Q7. The range is not an issue. Charging at home, I need more >100km range about twice a year, I can make that work for a cheaper initial outlay. Wonder can cars be made with modular battery capacity that you use only when you need them? Like roof box rental.

Nice review. But at €42k for a 'family' crossover CUV that only has a 120mile WLTP is steep. .. but at the lower spec end it competes in price with the mini-e. Kerb weight I'll argue your wrong. The Mx30 (1395kg to 1645kg) is 100kg lighter or equivalent to it's CV30 cousin (1484-1631kg) ! I think the RX8 doors are a mistake ask any i3 owner.. Lastly the MX30 that will make sense will be the rumoured range extender 'REX' version with a new generation sky-activ-x Wankel rotary generator , however not due til 2022. Then the small battery for weight & efficiency + a way to allowing long range journeys makes sense . Mazda do things their way and you have to admire them for it !

Mazda has rocked their styling across their range for years! And now they're chasing lux for interiors. I'll be disappointed if they drift away from Zoom-Zoom but EV should take care of that if they hold up their suspension tuning. My Bolt EV has a fairly harsh ride but 900 pounds of batteries. It just may be difficult to do with small cars.

Any time I see a Brava in public, I'm stuck by how good-looking they still are. On the Mazda, lovely car. I think the suicide doors night scare a few people off. Leaning in there to buckle a car seat wouldn't be fun. My kids couldn't sit themselves in and then get both doors closed. If you want new people to take the leap to electric, I'm not sure why you'd put this other obstacles in their way.

I have 3 problems: a. from B pillar on ear level, there is a humming constant noise b. the back visibility sideways, because of the tiny rear door is limited, and a bit annoying in the city traffic c. the charging cables have no reservoir in the trunk under the floor mat Everything else is A+ for me.
