All over the internet we've seen many videos complaining about the size of the Mazda MX-30's battery and its subsequent range. But we think they're missing the point.
The MX-30 is a fantastic little SUV perfectly fit for the urban dwellers who need a daily runaround. In fact, it's incredibly similar to the Dacia Spring! This got us thinking, this car has the potential to serve the greater public...

The MX-30 has received some stick for its small battery and range, but you rightly focus on the positives Eilis, well done for that. Your piece about ride sharing was really good, it's an important message and I'm sure the younger viewers are hearing you. Keep 'em coming, please!

Totally agree - we have a Mini Electric with a similar range and have no problems even with a long journey down to Devon. With a smaller battery we can charge 25% on a 3 pin plug in the 4hrs we get cheaper overnight, and so haven't even bothered with a wallbox charger 😁

I'm sure there are people who "need" lots of range and "need" high speed charging, but for those who are in less of a hurry and who are willing to do a bit more planning, longer trips are possible. I drive a converted classic VW which can do about 180 miles on the 40 kWh battery pack, but she only has a 6.6 kW charger on board. It takes over 3 hours to add 100 miles, so I just plan to stop overnight to charge up... a MUCH more relaxing way to travel!😁

Mazda officially mentioned that there will be a rotary range extender with the MX-30, so I'm curious to see how that pans out to be. Mazda have always been a left-field thinking engineering company, so I'm excited to see what they come up with. And that soul red metallic looks amazing, as it does on the MX-5 and Mazda3 👌

@@TriviaChallenge Oh wow what an expert here who clearly knows everything about how to run an automotive company 👏 You do realise that Mazda is a MUCH smaller company than its German, Japanese and American rivals? How else do you expect them to compete in a tough market when they have significantly lower engineering budgets and employee numbers?

Thank you for getting this car. Yeah those suicide doors are super cool, agree 200%. It's just a really nice place to spend time. A lot of people love to hate this car which is kind of sad.

I appreciate Maxda's positive 'spin' over the overall CO2 footprint being less in MX30 production due to the smaller battery, but for them to also state that the smaller battery means the car is lighter is just plain incorrect... According to EV-Database, the MX30, with its 30kWh usable battery size, has an Unladen Weight of 1720kg. The near identically-sized Peugeot e2008 SUV, with its 50% larger, 45kWh usable battery, is a mere 1548kg...! 🤓

I had one of these out on a one day test drive and loved it. The range is an issue for me but their was talk of a petrol range extender that would solve the long trip problem.

Price is close to a low range ID-3 but less range, although greater spec. You need to remember that many urban drivers may not have access to charging at home, so range and capacity are going to be important as they need to use charging at their destination more often.

A lot of people blame Mazda for the small battery size and the inpracticle freestyle door, but for me the range is totally enough, it makes the car lighter, cheaper and a bit more environmental friendly. The freestyle doors however make it special compared to others. With the RX-8 back then it was the same. Personally I don't care. I love mine. Mazda managed it to reach a outstanding safety rate in the Euro NCAP crash test - WITH those freestyle doors. The only complaints I have is the charge speed, because even under optimal conditions it only charges at about 36 kW maximum, which is 1C (charge speed / battery size). Mazda is going very conservative and safe in that regard, so the battery will probably never gonna make any problems, but they could give it a bit more. In the city you can still live with that without any problem. I even made a trip from Saxony to Lake Garda last summer. It took me a while, but it's possible and relaxed. The other one is the integration of Apple Carplay and Android Auto - a) it's only wired and b) due to the lack of a touchscreen on the top display it's not could to navigate in them. They should rather used the real touchscreen for the climate control for that. It's over designed anyway for only being a control menu for this. btw: you can deactivate the internal driving sound after the latest software update.

When most car companies use piano gloss plastic that is a magnet to dust + finger prints, and alcantara which becomes to look like a mucky dirty towel, I like that Mazda have broke that convention and used cork in their interiors - as a nod to their heritage (the company started over 100 years ago in Hiroshima by not producing cars, but cork). Most people will jump to the elephant in the room - the MX-30's range, but unlike most other reviews that don't bother to mention about Mazda's choice to go with producing smaller battery (contributing less carbon emissions), this Electroheads video did. As a guy who wants a niche of sportscars in the future to preserve the act of changing gears and hearing internal combustion engine sounds, I would disagree with the 'EV is the future' statement (hoping that those small portions of cars would adopt Porsche's synthetic eFuel technology), but this was one of the better videos from this channel 👍

Car/ride sharing will mean fewer vehicles on the road. Sounds great, but do car manufacturers want to sell fewer cars? I don't think so

Hi electroheads, I love your content in general, and am not totally against what Mazda appear to be trying to do with the smaller capacity battery; but the argument about charging times on a long journey is spurious. The fact that it takes very little time to fill the battery 20-80% doesn't really help (on a long journey) if you still haven't added very much range. For this battery the amount added will only be about 70 miles. This car is good for commuting and shortish journeys, which is fine. If it was going to be half decent for longer multi-charge road-trips they would have to have invested a bit more to make the charging much faster at least twice the current 50kW (which means will probably get max 40kW real world). This would probably also require significant battery management strategies to prevent overheating and it could be that Mazda are just not up to that at present. Not a terrible effort as a first EV but not quite sure who they are aiming for with this?

You have to consider that Mazda are a substantially smaller company than VW, Toyota, Honda etc with less engineering budgets and employee numbers. Yes the range is very limited amongst the grand scheme of things, but for the aforementioned limitations they have, Mazda have done the most they could here.

Its a nice looking car but I think an extra 50 or so miles minimum would have made it more viable for a do anything family car or similar. I guess part of the target market though might be families who do most of their driving around a single city and its suburbs, which the occasional slightly longer trip being possible. For that I think it may do well. It is a bit troubling that the current sttate of EVs still requires tough choices for some as to just how much range is the minimum that they can live with, though I think for many that extra 70 miles from a top up would be enough. You could potentially do a trip of 150-180 miles (I don't know how the claimed range compares to real world) with a single stop on that basis and I'd probably want to do that anyway. It would be pretty rare that I'd want to do more personally. But it is hard to get rid of that thought from the back of my mind entirely, that should I want to do more on the odd occasion, Mazda apparently are not even offering me the option of a car more suited to it at present and I'd need to do some planning to eke out as much range as possible and stop more often. Own it for a few years and put a good few charge cycles behind you and maybe the situation becomes a little more tenuous. I think I could live with something like this but there are going to be some nagging doubts. I think there is a market for it but I can see how it is going to be a tough sell for some.

Though that does kind of sum up my thoughts on electric car range. Its something I think I could live with if I put my mind to it, rather than something I barely have to even think about. I suspect this will remain the case as long as range is typically so heavily tied to price. Maybe I can find a longer range car in the price range if I look but what will it compromise on to deliver that?

@@Karras353 If range-per-pound is all important, then for less money than the MX30 you've got the 245 mile Renault Zoe Hatchback or the 250 mile range MG5 Estate. The Zoe has a 28 litre smaller boot but more passenger space. The MG5 has more of both...! Neither will have the same interior design or quality as the MX30, nor the exterior design style - but both would be WAY easier to live with having the extra range. 👍

I remember a Top gear where the guys brought 3 used BMWs for one of there challenges, one of the tests was a CSI style swab analysis of the interiors of the cars.... They all looked OK but...OMG! many bodily fluids and excreations were found, yuk, still keen on ride sharing, especially after the trauma of an ongoing pandemic?

I’ve got a Nissan Leaf 24 kw so small battery is my life, yep it’s all you need for city work it charges on granny plug in 4 hours to 80 % and on fast charge 20 mins it’s awesome as long as you don’t want to go more than a 100kms without charging. My understanding is battery charging cycles influences battery life so smaller batteries should theoretically degrade faster than a big one 🤔 thoughts anyone.

I like this car in some ways but for me, the long bonnet, and the fact it's an SUV with less space than a Honda jazz just put me off. I wish it had a better overall package, then you could forgive the short range.

I like and have owned Mazda's, but "no" this one has no future in my country (US) unless the range increases, many more charging stations are created across mountains and deserts AND most importantly the price becomes realistic to the majority of people who purchase the most cars. (NOT just the upper-middle and upper-classes)

People could be doing the 'school run and weekly shop' on a cargo bike, why don't you check out and promote the cargo bike rental scheme launched in hackney? Very odd to be promoting hugely wasteful SUVs for getting around the city, after all that campaigning for e-scooters and the other micromobility/bicycle content.

Compared to the cheaper EVs coming from China now or soon this is way over priced and way under featured. I've owned Mazda's and loved them but I can't see them surviving the ev transition

Hello, Thanks for the case that you made in favour of the car. Are you pulling our legs? At best, this is a second car. It's outside the financial pocket of most lower income families as a first car. If it were chosen then its range is awful, so no family outings without "very careful planning". Oh, such fun. Are we there yet? Well, no. As a second car, this has done nothing to reduce vehicles on the road. As a London centric form of transportation, well what about cycles, buses, taxi's or the Tube? Maybe I am being unimaginative, but £30k plus sounds like a very expensive convenience. Also, the fact that in the U.S, they need to support sale with a limited offer gas guzzler suggests that Mazda are already recognising the shortcomings of the range. However the concept is sold, that car is going to need recharging at least 3 times more often as a tank of fuel and that tank only takes a few minutes to fill. I started this about the time that you started with the doors. Am I correct in saying that the rear doors require the front doors to be open and that if the rear doors close onto the already closed front doors, then the former will damage the latter. If so, then another worry for the parents of young kids. By the way, I think that saying "the room in the back is not as bad as it looks", might be classed as anticipation offset by faint praise. So, is the car flawed? Oh yes, most definitely. Its other features do not place it above above the other small range cars which, stuffed to the gills with pointless gadgets that will soon pall with time, appear to have lost the plot. But that's a more general problem for the future. How are most people getting by quite normally at the moment without EV's? Anyway, is there anything that I really do like about the MX-30? Well I've always loved that colour red. Regards, Glenn. :-)

I do get advocating for EV’s , but this car is just not up to 2021 , safety features are from 2015 , range let’s not talk about it , price 31k add extra 6k and get double of miles elsewhere 👎🏽 Doomed to flop I’m afraid

Did you even watch the video to see why Mazda went with the smaller battery approach? Also you do realise that Mazda is a much smaller company (engineering budgets and number of employees) than their rivals from Japan and Germany? Why do you expect them to make a car that can directly compete with the VW ID3 or a Tesla for 31k when they've been reluctant to hop on this EV bandwagon?

Nissan had that 10 years ago , I’m not against EV’s , but this car will not push nobody into the EV revolution with 31k price tag , test drove this car few weeks ago in Harrogate , and well , let’s not talk about it , correctly driving 6 years old 320d and in the market for an EV

@@LittleJoshVarela With all due respect, this is Mazda's first proper attempt at making an EV car - do you seriously expect the small company's first attempt to be all perfect and dandy from the beginning? As I said, Mazda are tiny compared to the development budgets that VW group, Honda, BMW, Toyota etc have. When the average motorist in the UK does no more than 20 miles a day, I don't see how the 124 mile range would make this doomed to flop. If you really care about the environmental impact you make, then you ought to also consider that by using smaller batteries, the manufacturing process is less damaging to the environment than manufacturing larger batteries. Less capacity means faster charging times, as it takes about 30 mins to charge from 20-80% with the majority of 50kw/h public charging points you'll find on motorways. If you do need to do longer travels, you can always rent a car that has better range for that particular day or heck, take the train.

@@smilepermile8165 I do get your point , but after paying 30k for a car ,I’m not going to rent a car to travel to Birmingham / London , and the charging time is not faster than any other EV out there as you know . A too small battery and range is a benefit? What a load of horse $h1t. Next you'll say removing one of the wheels would be beneficial because it would mean less wear on the road and rolling resistance so better range. Both are equally ridiculous. Bottom line, it should have at least double the range that it has. If anything this is Mazda's compliance model and they made it noncompetitive on purpose so nobody will buy them and they don't have to train techs how to maintain them. They also probably lose money on every one so the best way to slow the bleeding is to make it a dud.

I honestly don't get this car it's range is terrible for a modern EV and trying to claim its aimed to be a an urban car doesn't make sense when making it an suv nearly 4.5m in length and over 2m wide

I think Mazda’s EV isn’t the future, but a failure. The planned REX is a particularly bad idea. In order to keep the range extender healthy, you’d have to periodically burn fossil fuels even if you try to drive in all electric mode.

Cute haha, suicide doors easy as long as you have the front door open , like the i3 this was a mistake, but not as bad as the battery size . Nobody will buy Mazda at that price with that range , what drug have they given you, the advertised excuse for 2014 battery size standard of 33 kWh in this vehicle , you will be lucky to get 100 miles range in winter
