The real reason for these collections including the extras is the 50 year copyright law. They have to release them in order to keep the rights and that includes the demos that had not been released. It’s great that the remaining fans get to hear stuff after all these years though. I’m a big fan of these collections but not a fan of the huge price! The McCartney archives included a hi res download - be nice if the others did the same.

Totally brilliant review. I loved the scene setting with albums such as Delaney & Bonnie & friends ++. Like you say towards the end having lived with albums such as this for decades they do become embedded and remixes can be troubling to the ears - I was exactly same with the 2001 remix. Great point also about young people and streaming. Well done you.

I am very impressed Norman with your down to Earth approach to the Uber release and the remix of the album. Although the wooden box release has had some flack about the price, it is a beautiful package. There is also versions for folk with less money like myself and I am very happy with my 5 CD / 1 Blu Ray set. What is on my mind is that it is so important the music of this remarkable man is introduced to new generations of music appreciation fans.

Having met him in the 80's George was unique because he was just so down to earth, he retained his 'normality' throughout his life - I love these re releases and - always a pleasure to get your perspective Sir - keep safe

I share you opinion of the orginial Spector wall of sound mix. I always felt that this was grandiose record showing us the depth of George’s spirit. IMHO it was a perfect record. Played first four sides today and was taken back to that place and time. The Beatles were the soundtrack to my teenage years and ATMP started me on the path to adulthood. So I don't even know if I am capable of hearing differences between those I have heard or the new stuff. Not to say I'm deaf or anything (though my wife thinks I am). I no longer have my original copy of All Things Must Pass, and I do not know where it went (this is why you wrote Maslov on some of your albums) so I'll probably pick up the deluxe version, because much fine music lies within. As always, please carry on. You out of the blue bring up something I'd completely forgotten about (e.g., Herbie Hancock Sextant) and it makes me happy.

This was easily my favorite Mazzy clip. So informative and thoughtful. Your breakdown of other recordings that employed many of the same musicians that were on ATMP inspired me to pick up some LPs that I didn't have, including the Leon Russell record. Not going to get Beaucoups of Blues though because even YOUR passion could never persuade me to buy a Ringo record. lol MAZZY RULES!!

But I liked how you evaluated and explained why younger modern ears might want or hear things sounding a bit different. But I agree with you, my favorite is the 1970 production, to me it fits like a well worn glove…confortable, familiar and easy to wear.

I love this review - very intelligent and very fair. I agree that the best way to approach the new stereo mix is as a complement or alternative, not as a definitive version. So many new (previously buried) sounds now come to light, which I found fantastic as a lifelong fan of All Things Must Pass. Perhaps for every newfound sound there's also something lost from before, but overall, I think Wah-Wah, Let It Down, I Dig Love (especially) and Hear Me Lord actually benefit from the new treatment. Those high-pitched backing vocals behind the lines "And I know how sweet life can be / If I keep myself free" in Wah-Wah - wow, so beautiful. I agree that My Sweet Lord possibly suffers, but not as much as Isn't It a Pity: yes, we get to hear a fuzzy synthesizer figure that's quite a surprise (I've haven't yet gone back to previous CDs to check whether the synth was there at all), but Pity, as much as My Sweet Lord, is the big "rock cathedral" ATMP track ... so, well, that is a bit of a pity. I've got used to the drier George lead vocals, after being a little concerned when the title track was previewed late last year. The outtakes/jams disc is phenomenal, so funny and exciting in places, same with the Day 1 demos disc. Overall, I think All Things Must Pass has always been such a MYSTERIOUS album, in a way that, say, JL/Plastic Ono Band is not, and in fact no piece of John or Paul music is, because they were so (too?) confident and assertive - meaning that it's okay if something about George's masterpiece remains elusive. It's the way it should be, somehow. Loved your piece on the Uber Deluxe as well, Norman. What a work of art that is!

Some interesting food for thought. ATMP is a top 3 solo Beatles album for me. I've been looking forward to this release for a while. I can't really justify that uber set although I did consider it. I have been enjoying the remixes that come out from The Beatles and their solo releases. I don't think of them as replacements, but just an alternative experience. Like with Sgt Pepper or the white album, do I want to listen to the mono, the 2009 stereo remaster, the 2018 remix, or the vintage vinyl? Different things pop out on all of them. Like you I appreciate Phil's work on ATMP, but I think more than you I wanted to hear the less reverberated version to hear the individual parts better. Not that it becomes the definitive version, just a different experience. I haven't heard the new set yet. Looking forward to it. Thanks for the thoughtful discussion.

Absolutely with you regarding inclusion of things we've heard on bootlegs. I've had Beware of ABKCO since the 90s, but I'm so glad the Harrison Estate are finally able to make some money on those recordings. A lot of the Day 1 demo's are new to me, as are the other takes. My early favourite on this set is the Day 1 demo of "I Dig Love". It's so much fun.

Great video. I’m pretty underwhelmed with the remix on vinyl. Don’t think this album was in need of a remix, but I got it anyway because of all the hype. My copy is going back due to the horrible nonfill and I won’t be seeking a replacement.

Those forums are full of music snobs and know it all’s. I don’t read them anymore it just made me annoyed. I can’t quite make my mind up on modern remixes . Being an old guy I kinda want to hear the original record ( with no scratches and pops) . As for young people only buying vinyl when I was young that was all you could buy. Another first class video, informative as always.

I have to say that I have not bought any version of this 50th Anniversary release. I have an original box set, in NM condition. But I’m interested in the new mixes/demos/outtakes etc., and was interested in your thoughts on this multiple-release, Mazzy, and so I watched your video. It’s funny - you said pretty much what I thought you would say, in general, anyway - and I think that’s what I needed to hear! That is, that these mixes don’t replace the original mix! So now I think I know what I wanna pick up - probably the 8-LP set. I’d LOVE to have the demos with Ringo & Klaus, for sure - I think the electric demos from day one would push my buttons! This is a very thoughtful review, and I thank you for that. Wanna hear something funny? When I was in 6th grade, I remember Olivia Newton John’s hit version of “If Not For You”. She just turned it into a straight love song, I suppose - nothing really spiritual about it. But I LOVED her version; loved her voice and that slide guitar that almost sounds like it’s crying. I agree with most of the remarks here. Particularly regarding the remastering and remixing. Some random thoughts. My original experience with this was on cassette in 1970. Played it on a mono cassette player. I just wanted to put that out there because even in low fidelity, I loved this. When you are 13, you care more about the tunes than you can about the nuances of the recording and the instruments. Now, of course, I really appreciate the clarity, although personally I was quite happy with the remaster of the original tracks in 2001. That said, when you listen to remaster of White Album and this latest ATMP, side by side, I hear much more clarity in White Album tracks. Maybe it's my ears. But -- I love all the new tracks in this edition -- the demos with Ringo and Klaus are particularly good. It seems crazy much of this hasn't been heard (properly, outside bootlegs) in all this time. And I agree with the the presenter here on that topic. It all needed an official release. When ATMP came out, no one could have imagined it would be the *pinnacle* of George's solo career, although I think you must also include Concert for Bangla Desh in that pinnacle. Having more than 4 hours of ATMP material is almost unreal at this point in my life. But I'm very grateful for it. I also didn't know, until very recently, how very many of the songs on ATMP had been around for some time (some as far back as '66!) and summarily rejected by the Beatles. I knew about some, of course, and had heard some bootlegs, but the amount is rather astonishing. Songs George worked on while still a Beatle include: Hear Me Lord Let It Down All things must pass Isn't it a Pity The Art of Dying Run of the Mill Behind That Locked Door Not to mention Sour Milk Sea, Dehra Dun and several more, I believe. And yes, I knew George had stockpiled a lot, and maybe even began to hold some things back in anticipation of his solo album. But wow, that's a lot. And when ATMP came out, I think absolutely everyone would have assumed this was all brand new music from George. I know i did. But maybe that's fate. And maybe ATMP is the best argument for why the Beatles breakup needed to happen. However, I think it's interesting to consider what George's first proper solo album would have been like if all that material had been used up within the Beatles! We might have just had My Sweet Lord, Beware of Darkness, What is Life, and the Apple Jam! No, not really, but... A few more thoughts. This latest edition would be *more* complete if they had included the extras that are included in the 2001 reissue. Argh! Most notably, the other version of "I Live For You," which George wasn't wild about, but I love should be in this new collection. Personally -- I think an excellent bonus would have been a few tracks from unreleased Concert for Bangla Desh tapes. "Hear Me Lord" was played live in the afternoon and didn't make the cut on the official release. I'd sure like to hear it. But I hope ALL that music from the Banga Desh concert is re-released with a nice big package of musical extras. The music from ATMP is, after all, no less than musical history. And wow, does it stand the test of time.

I have All Things Must Pass with the Apple label and the Purple Capitol label. I think the original is all I really need (and maybe only one copy instead of two). It's a Pity the liner notes on the original do not tell us when the drummer is Ringo, Allan White, or Jim Gordon, etc. Great thoughts on your favorite solo Beatle album.

I’m 63 and bought this album when it came out. I never did warm up to the wall of sound thing. I’ve always wondered what it would have sounded like with a less cluttered mix, so I’m eager to get a copy of this. The last version wasn’t to my taste, but it sounds like this is going to be closer. I didn’t know Phil Specter from Phil Everly when I first heard this music, but ATMP just didn’t sound like a Beatles record to me.

George turned me onto Indian music too! i think in order to understand George more, you really need releases such as the Collaborations boxset with Ravi

When you were talking about all the influences of ATMP of 1970s albums and albums that are similar, i was really wanting you to mention Elton John’s “Tumbleweed Connection” which was heavily influenced by all those artists you mentioned especially The Band, Neil Young and Leon Russell.

I think they are mixing these anniversary editions for a younger audience to attract them on streaming and vinyl. I personally like them. For ATMP, I always thought a lot of the tracks were a muddy mess. A lot of them were great. So, I am looking forward to the remix and see it as an addition, not a replacement. I think you're correct about maybe including two versions on the Bluray, a remix and a remaster. Maybe it's a cost thing? But yeah, that would be the thing to do. I also agree, even though I have most of the outtakes, their cleaned-up presentation is really worth the price of admission.

Ooh, Steve Wilson would have been interesting if he had mixed it. For me, I have the original album and the remastered set from a few years ago - so I felt I'm good - I like this album but I don't go too it often enough to justify another version. Let it Be Spector, yeah, too much... ATMP/Imagine Spector - just right amount and essential.

Thinking about getting the deluxe. What would you recommend the cd or vinyl version?

I never even knew about what Phil did to this album or Let it Be until years later , maybe even after the internet and so many people were complaining about him. I was thinking I could not imagine LIB and ATMP sounding different and or better. LIB...Naked I got and was not impressed with it. Sure the songs are great but the stripped down I did not like as much. It was not horrible just different. I hope the ATMP is not too stripped off as again I did not mind Phil. I do look forward to getting this. All of those albums you mention at the beginning I have them all and I may sit down one day and play them all back to back. Take care.

Totally agree with you about separate remixes for streaming and CD/BD. I'm still not over how the CD of Jimi Hendrix's Electric Ladyland was compressed to hell and back. The funny thing though is that the young people are buying vinyl because they say it sounds better "warmer" whatever, and that's because you can't compress the volume levels on a vinyl mix, so they're forced to provide a very natural mix for them. That's why they sound better. The problem is that CDs have been ultra-compressed ever since the loudness wars began in the mid-'90s, and that got carried over to streaming, which is why CDs and streaming (aside from the added digital file compression) sound so bad-all subtlety has been lost.

Thanks for this great review, I agree that "My Sweet Lord" lost that magical touch in this Remix (The same applies to "If Not For You"), it's a little dry without Phil Spector wall of sound.

For me, most of The Beatles' remixes were an improvement over the originals - Hey Jude, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Helter Skelter and Get Back being exceptions. The remixes on All Things Must Pass are an improvement in sound. The dryer vocals take a little getting used to because of how we've heard them for 50 years, but it's more intimate and cleaner now.

I am with you @Norman Maslov - the music should be made to sound great no matter which medium (vinyl, stream, CD, Blu-Ray, etc). I don't get why they should sound the same. I feel the experience should be great no matter what medium you choose, I want the production to be optimize the music so the experience is amazing. In regards to CD's as a young person - I still buy them, I prefer the vinyl. I am not going to lie I have The Band Superdeluxe sets (Big Pink/Brown Album/Stage Fright) and I have never even listened the CD's in them even with the Woodstock and Royal Albert Hall recordings. I have streamed them though. Glad to have them though.

This type of video makes so much more sense than the stupid unboxing video I See from a lot of enthusiasts.

I do agree with you on getting someone else to remastering and cutting the records. I don't mean to piss on what Giles Martin did on the previous Beatles releases but look at Blue note is doing with their 80th and tone poet series and the price they're giving us and the quality they're giving us and who they got to remaster and cut it's top notch. Apple could do much much better I just hope the let it be release finally gets what everyone is expecting.

Could you comment on what the 2000 remastered, 30th anniversary version does for you? Not remixed, obviously, and under supervision of the man himself, so, perhaps, more faithful

I got All Things in 1970, I was 14. I had trouble with the production at first. But within a couple months I got used to it and it became, and is, the Bible to me.

If you have time jump over to Bobby Whitlock's UT page under header 'All things must be a joke.' It's an interesting rant. Apparently he hates the new mix overall. I mean he's mortified about it. He much prefers the original pressing. The one George personally handed to him.

Hi, Thanks for this video and the effort you put into it in showing the other vinyl lp's. Last week a book by Kenneth Womack and Jason Kruppa, titled All Things Must Pass Away, has been released and the albums you showed with a "connection" or with the same groove are talked about in that book. I really recommend the book, I am reading it right now and it's a very entertaining book. Very detailed. And now ...... waiting till Friday to get my 5cd/bluray set and the standard vinyl set of ATMP. Take care.

I love the feel of the album. It's just this unabashedly intense, sprawling thing that covers so many topics and ideas, from the religious to the personal. The Spector production has always been an issue, but to be honest it's really grown on me over several listens. I like how muddy and messy it can be, directly contrasting the perfectionist mixing on Abbey Road or Sgt. Pepper a few years earlier. George's songs went wild in a way they never previously had, and they shine through in spite of the wall of sound gimmick. As for this remix, I mostly like it, but I can't tell much of a difference on many tracks (I got the triple LP on vinyl, not digital or CD, so I don't know if it's different on those). I do miss how big and loud some songs like Wah-Wah or Art of Dying were with the original production, but lighter stuff like Isn't It A Pity sounds sublime. It's more or less just a slightly-different version of the album, not much better or worse. I listened to the outtakes and demos on KZfaq, and they're incredible; that's the real reason to buy the whole deluxe set.

New mix is my goto mix now with hi-res files. Not going back to old mix except for 2014 mix of my sweet lord.

All Things Must Pass never sounded as good as it did in its original vinyl version. I am keeping George Harrison’s 2001 30th Anniversary remix as a companion piece to the 50th Anniversary remix. Ultimately, I like what Paul Hicks and Dhani Harrison have done with All Things Must Pass. The moving forward of George’s voice and the bass in the mix work on most of the album’s cuts. I’m with you on the alternate takes. They’re revelatory.

Wonderful video Mazzy! I was hesitating to buy the Uber edition, but it's expensive and most of all, they don't ship to Mexico (which relieved me a bit!). I ordered the 8 LP edition instead. I am very excited to hear it. I also loved the deluxe edition of POB.

Bravo!!! I appreciate your perspective on the All Things Must Pass music. I love the mysteriousness of this record in its original form. I personally like the original Let It Roll with "Oh Sir Frankie Crisp' kind of buried but still audible - as a teen back when I bought it I thought that song in particular brought out the flavor of the original poster, kind of creepy but sacred. You used the word 'magical' to describe the music - I agree with that (as well as country and gospel - maybe not used together, I forget). I also enjoy George's understated sense of humor on this record (e.g. The album cover, and lyric: handkerchiefs to match your tie). The outtakes and demos are very well done - yes brilliant!!! - much better than the bootlegs. The only outtake I miss is 'I'll Still Love You' - relegated to Ringo a few years later for Ringo's Rotogravure. I am happy with downloads of the hi-res versions of the 70 tracks without packaging. I figure I haven't needed a book for this record so why do I need one now? There's plenty written about this album and info all over the place if you dig in the right places. Different folks for different strokes - however that goes or versa visa. Peace - and thanks!!!!

But let's not forget, George has expressed wanting to remix this for years. He was never entirely satisfied with the OTT production values of ATMP. George said this himself in the sleeve notes to the 2000 reissue. Personally, I like it a lot. I thought they did a great job on Wah-Wah. The 1970 version is almost unlistenable. Anyway. But yes, the out-takes and demos are just fantastic.

Great review, Mazzy! I'm not really a fan of remixes either. It's a bit like colorizing black and white films...a novelty at first but the original is what will stand the test of time. I'm sticking with my orange label Capitol reissue from 1976 but im glad you make videos like this so we all can see these sets.

I can't wait for my copies I ordered to come in! I'm mostly excited for the outtakes and archival stuff...but I am curious to hear the new mixes. I think another part that comes into play with trying to cater to the younger audiences with these updated mixes has to do with production value and how these songs would sound in playlists next to more popular acts such as The White Stripes, The Black Keys or Greta Van Fleet. The technology has advanced since the 70s and things also are louder.
