MECHANICAL ADVANTAGE FOR THE WIN!! Using Harbor Freight snatch blocks to remove a large tree stump

Using pulleys / snatch blocks to help me remove a tree stump in order to clear an area for a future sawmill. Its crazy how much more pulling power you get by just adding these pulleys. I try a few different variations from single line straight pull, 2:1, 3:1, and 4:1.

About the only smart thing he did was to cut a notch on the stump to keep the chain from slipping. Winches aren't build to take the shock loads of an inertia pull. When using the winch, raise the hood to keep the pulley from coming through the windshield if something lets loose.

Perhaps even use the truck to pull moving forward in bo-low ... Reverse isn't the best choice of gears for power-lifting. As trucks go; that one looks like a horse that has been whipped hard and put away wet.

I have a lot of logs left over after sawmill took out some trees, some too big to move by hand, and some too heavy for my winch, I have no anchor points for proper snatch block placement, but I will not try to pull them with my truck while attached to my winch, I am going to try your trick and make a notch in my biggest stump, good idea.

Don’t use a frame for more than 2/1 load of a nominal winch capacity. Get a chain, run it underneath, and anchor it that way. Lots of stuff been pulled apart or ripped off over the years of winches…

Another way to remove more dirt from the stump is using a pressure washer. Just hook it up to the water tote. You’re gonna get dirty but it is effective 😂
@TheBrushcutter

Exactly the comment I was looking for. After hurricane Laura decided I had too many trees in my yard the root balls left after I cut the downed trees up were too heavy for my little tractor to lift. I figured I had enough lawn damage to repair already and didn't want to create huge drag scars from just pulling them across the lawn. So I hooked up the pressure washer, installed the jet nozzle, put on my rain gear and blasted the dirt out of them. I was able to pick the stumps up and move them easily after that. Messy work but it did what I wanted.
@zerker2000

for the second part, wonder it would be easier to chain it to the bucket with how it's lifted halfway, and drag it backwards now that a lot of the weight's on the tractor

This is a good way to die. Body positioning is everything folks, and in no way should you ever be yanking on anything with a tiny winch cable. If youre using harbor freight (read chinese) equipment, you need to be extra cautious in making sure you are no where around when things inevitability go south. Murphy's law is a real thing...
@edmowrey9755
@edmowrey9755 10 ай бұрын
The first part is a textbook perfect demonstration of the power of mechanical advantage! The bit where you tried yanking it out with your truck bumper, not so much! Not recommended. Have you got another video showing the time when your bumper comes off?
@straightcutgeerz
@straightcutgeerz 10 ай бұрын
Thanks....as far as the bumper it's heavily built ....the mounting bolts for the winch or the winch would break first....however it's pretty tough..I have pulled much harder on other things with it before....no issues....yet!....

Son, you're sitting on at least two snatch blocks, USE THEM!! Don't put unneeded wear and abuse on the winch and your truck. An extra five minutes of rigging can save hundreds of dollars or more in repairs.
@straightcutgeerz
@straightcutgeerz 8 ай бұрын
That truck doesn't know anything but abuse 😂...don't get me wrong I love that thing but the reason I do it because it keeps on ticking...as far as the winch goes I give it same treatment and yet it continues to work like a champ ...they definitely do not build things like they use to... appreciate the comment though!!

why not just burn it out? sure you will have to stick around to control the fire and you could have use sender blocks to contain the fire if need be.

Because that stump would not burn completely out. Ground level and that's about it. And. You can burn the entire tree doing that little bit and still have all the roots that weren't exposed left.

@@TheBrushcutter that’s wrong. The stump and the roots would burn.
@TheBrushcutter

@@doccadaver maybe where you are is extremely dry? But in my area, the only stump that even tries to burn out and take the roots with it is an old growth pine. All others, not happening. That observation comes not only from experience but is reinforced by observation on military installations and National Forrest lands where I hunt. Those areas are burned regularly to help the Red Cockaded Woodpecker, and during military training exercises. Again. Pine will burn mostly away, hardwoods to about ground level. That is from observation and experience trying to burn them out. In fact, the video creator will learn that even now that the stump is dug up and moved to a pile, it still will not burn away readily unless he gets the dirt out of the root ball. Facts.
@doccadaver

@@TheBrushcutter I don’t care what kind of tree it is or where you’re at in the world that stump will burn. A fire only needs three things, fuel, oxygen and heat, and you only have to produce one fuel add fuel to the fire. It will burn all the way down it will burn the roots. Trust me on this I’ve done it more times than I can count. I wouldn’t be saying this if I didn’t know it would work.
@doccadaver

@@TheBrushcutter I tell you why don’t you go to the Internet, KZfaq find you a redneck or a hillbilly that’s done this before and watch how he does it. First off that that stump is dry, so grab your drill get the longest fattest drillbit you have and drill a bunch of holes in the top. Pour some used motor oil down the holes or not that’s up to you then build you campfire on top of it. then once that gets going down a bit through another equivalent of a campfire on top of that, then come back tomorrow and it will be gone since you’re in the middle of the woods. Make sure embers don’t go everywhere, so build you a cinderblock ring around it, top it off and put a chimney in it, make sure you got a hole for air problem solved problem Staying solved

Mechanical advantage is around us everywhere, but for the most part failed to be noticed or taken for granted. Doubtful that you could even point out every process in your video that makes use of mechanical advantage. But your video needs to start out with a lengthy and In depth legal disclaimer. There’s almost as many not recommended practices as there are mechanical advantages in the video. I dare not to list them all. But I can not be silent about the most obvious issue. Wirerope and chains are not designed to be shock loaded like that. Not only the dangers of it, there is no way to deny the damage you have cause to your equipment. How hypocritical can one be by taking the time to grease their snatch block, then follow up with the shock loading of their wirerope? It makes about as much sense as showing the advantages of snatch blocks and mechanical advantage but prove to the world the disadvantages out weigh the advantages in your mind. That’s what you did, when you didn’t want to take the time to set up the system that you had so highly praised. You opted to look like a fool. What better example could there be for not practicing what your preaching?
