The topic of this episode is the greatest German and some would say the greatest white grape variety in the world: Riesling. The amazing thing about Riesling is that it can produce a huge variety of wine styles at high levels: It can produce great dry or sweet wines, still wines or sparkling wines, it can be beautiful but it can age for a long time. There are very few grape varieties who can do this: Chenin Blanc and maybe Furmint come to mind.

Yes, better stay that way so it doesn't get the burgundy, bordeaux or napa disease, such that there is great wine at modest prices available to wine lovers, so that great wines are accessible to also those not belonging to the elite.

Riesling absolutely IS The Greatest white grape/wine variety in the world, especially when grown in Germany. From elegant Kabinett wines (dry or with a little residual sugar, especially from the Saar region) to well structured dry wines to accompany a good meal (including excellent Großes Gewächs wines) to Spät- and Auslese wines as aperitif all the way up to lavishly sweet Beerenauslese, Trockenbeerenauslese and even Eiswein. And they all can be excellent - no other grape variety in the world can achieve this, not even close. My love for wines started with Mosel wines and German wines are still on the top of my list.

We visited the Alsace region two years ago and purchased a Riesling from Albert Seltz (2011) for under $20. It was delicious! Out of curiosity, and just after watching this video, I “Vivinoed” this wine-4.4. No surprise. It was off dry but the acidity balanced the wine remarkably well. Great wine; great value.

I have just found your channel and love it! I am a big fan of Riesling. The range of styles is breathtaking and it is one of the very few grapes that make wines which are equally good with or without food. I watched a video about wine from Ningxia in China recently and it occurred to me that Riesling would do well there, even though the Chinese themselves seem to be obsessed with Bordeaux blend reds... Anyway, I find your approach to wine very refreshing. It combines erudition with approachability and without any pretentious fuss. I look forward to seeing more of them. Thank you.

Love Rieslings. Started with Alsace wines that are perhaps a bit more approachable, but now love the steeliness and high acidity of the Mosel too. Love sweet versions but my absolute favourites are aged dry Rieslings, when you can add a little honey and some nuts into the mix, but still have enough acidity. Lucky to have a few bottles of 20 year old Pechstein and other BW wines in my cellar for dipping into perhaps once or twice a year. Keep up the good work. Love your videos and nearly always agree so thanks for the education!

Really nice video about my favorite wine grape. Especially from Germany and particularly the Mosel. I love them from dry to dessert style with kabinett being my daily favorite. It is the acidity and lack of oak that makes it perfect to me. I could be pretty satisfied just drinking german riesling and red Bordeaux.

Surprising info about Riesling and Romania. We have a lot of good wines, especially in the last fifteen years, but in the stores Rieslings are actually hard to find. A lot of Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio or, last but not least, the local Fetească Regală or Tămîioasă, but very few Riesling. At least this is my experience. We have those imported from Germany in some supermarkets. Greetings from Romania. Noroc! Zum Wohl!

It's very likely that Romania isn't on the 2nd place with "real" riesling. Most of the riesling sold here is Italian Riesling (Olaszrizling, Welschriesling). Very few wineries produce "Rhine" Riesing, but the trend is towards favoring it.

@@kengillman5805 great point Ken. I have some Aussie and NZ Riesling in my cellar and friends (even German ones) love it. The Kiwi Reisling initially had a real peculiar petroleum aroma (which I learned was common to Reisling) but the taste was amazing. I lived in Germany and was blown away by the white wine and the vast choice of different levels of sweetness of Reisling. I find that the majority of German wines that get exported to US markets tend to be sweet or off dry at best, hence my question to Constantin.

Well, prices are also relative and taste is always subjective, I might be biased because I just like the grape variety. If the wines are a bit too sweet for you, maybe a Mosel Riesling could be better? I think many Rieslings are very fairly priced if you compare them to white Burgundys, or many red wines. I enjoy fairly inexpensive Rieslings but even the Grosse Gewaechs ones are just around 40-50 Euros and some of the best ones are just around 100 Euros, in other regions you might only get a very average white Wines or very disappointing Nappa reds for the same price.

Most people buy white wines in discounts shops like Lidl, where below 5 euro you get plenty of SB and even Chardonay but Riesling isn't there. And even when you find cheaper one it is rather really low quality. For me it is the best white grape in the world.
