Turner Classic Movies host Ben Mankiewicz sits down with director and comedy writer Mel Brooks, now 93, who opens up about his politically-incorrect films like "Blazing Saddles" and "The Producers," and whether they could be made today; and about his relationship with his soulmate, actress Anne Bancroft, with whom he was married for 41 years until her death in 2005.

Last year, I got the high honor to see "An Evening With Mel Brooks" live in Vegas. At 92, he was sharp as a tack and told countless great stories about his days in TV and his years making some of the great comedies ever. The term 'national treasure' gets tossed around a lot, but it sure as sh*t applies here..or to quote the man himself in History of the World.."it's good to be the king!"

Cut the cash off and watch the "palestinian people" slither back to the countries they came from. I just see "political correctness" as meaning that politicians and governments have often gone too far in avoiding saying anything even slightly possibly insulting about different religions, genders, skin color, whatever human differences. In other words, a fear of criticism. And when that happens, you cannot have a sincere conversation anymore. If one is afraid that a single word, when clearly not being deliberately insulting, can bring war or terrorism upon one, we are lost, might as well pull the plug on everything. North Korea and extreme Islam are two of the most awful examples of this. Neither accept even the slightest criticism of their ways lest a horrible vengeance be upon us. We, as a diverse human community, cannot work like that unless we want to be slaves for eternity.

It was sad that he thinks Blazing Saddles went too far. I'm Black and that movie is iconic with so many other Black friends of mine and myself. This "cancel culture" needs to die. I'll be so glad when the societal pendulum swings back to the middle. This extremism and the uber-sensitive are going too far nowadays. They are destroying the very thing they thought they were standing up for. They have brought their moral meter to an area that never needed one. Mainly because it's where we go to escape ALL meters. They judge with blindness. They hate with no chance of forgiveness. And they destroy with no care of the repercussions. The audience decided by either supporting and buying tickets or not. It was that simple. And it worked! I don't look to comedy or comedians to be the moral compass of anything. They are not politicians or community leaders. They are not some religious leader preaching what's right or wrong. They are the jesters there to mock the king (society and everything in it). And people are saying they can't mock this or that now. Or at least mock in a particular way. HUH?! Do you realize the genre you're standing in with that soapbox?! Still, I admire the love and passion he still has for his wife. I can see the love and the pain simultaneously. And I hope that the woman I'm with and I can be in that same place. Even when one of us is gone. Mel, you brought TRUE laughter because you went too far. You became a generation's icon and told us about ourselves, even the extreme ways, in such ways that we actually did laugh at ourselves. You're a true treasure and the cancel culture can't take that away. No matter how bad they want the past to represent the present to form the future. They will and should fail every time. Thank you sir!!!

Out of control and load they were throwing gags at one an other. Our food went unattended because we were laughing so hard. Of course that encouraged them to create a stage of their booth for everyone in ear shot. As they left they sort of sidestepped their way bowing to us their impromptu audience to the exit. We all went crazy. Still watching their movies an laughing my ads off.

It is life’s special treasure to share it which the one you love. Mr Brooks and Ms. Anne Bancroft were fortunate to have that and each other. One of the greatest women to grace the stage.

Mel Brooks is a national treasure. He’s a treasure for ALL humanity. He’s maintained such a funny and refreshing style of comedy, and he is such an unassailably good person. He is kind, sincere, generous, loving, compassionate, and absolutely legendary. Long live the great Mel Brooks! ❤️

A couple extremely difficult to compete with when it comes to talent and even more difficult to compete with when it comes to a love story. An unlikely pair but a perfect match... I enjoy watching Jody Fosters "Home for the Holidays" every year because Ann did such an amazing job playing the Mother of Holly Hunter and Robert Downey Jr.

Young Frankenstein has, hands down, been my absolute favorite comedy!! I've watched it so many times that I think I could, literally, repeat all the dialogue of this movie!! I could, probably, watch it daily and still laugh heartily....It makes you feel that happy when watching Gene, Madeline, Cloris, and the irreverent Marty Feldman! Blazing Saddles runs a close second!! Thank You Mr. Brooks!

My great uncle reminded me so much of Mel Brooks. He was in sales and also a watercolor painter. Same age, similar background. And his wife, my great aunt, was like Anne. A great lady, forthright, and a sharp cookie. Love at first sight for them, as well. She passed before him (of cancer, like Anne) and he was just lost. I saw Mel Brooks give a talk at the Chicago Theatre.

It’s nice to see that age has not dulled the legendary comedic mind of Mel Brooks. He’s still just as sharp as a tack and he reminisces with such enthusiasm. It just goes to show that even though some people get older on the outside, inside they may feel as young as ever.
