Melbourne's last four Tramway/Railway Level Crossings

This video features footage of the last four locations in Melbourne where an electric tramway crosses and electric railway at a level crossing. The crossing at Gardiner was removed in 2015, with the other three still operating at the time of writing. These crossings are manually controlled from a signal box, which also has the unusual task of changing the overhead wire voltage between 600v DC for trams and 1500v DC for trains. The two systems are also different gauges, with Melbourne's trams being 1435mm Standard Gauge while the railway network is 1600mm Broad Gauge. This footage is compiled from clips that are part of longer videos on each crossing, and you can watch the full versions here:
Glenhuntly - • Glenhuntly railway/tra...
Gardiner - • Gardiner railway/tramw...
Riversdale - • Riversdale railway/tra...
Kooyong - • Kooyong Tramway Square...

I've been on a tram that got stuck right on that Kooyong level crossing before. Some car cut off the tram and forced the driver to brake in an unpowered section.

As much as these suck from a throughput standpoint (so slow and cumbersome), they are interesting pieces of engineering, especially considering the switch over for the trains at 1500 volts DC from the trams network at 600 volts DC - this always fascinated me, and such a thing can only exist because of political will and cooperation between the companies at the time. It's interesting to me to think that when the VR lines were all steam, having a tram level crossing was a fairly simple concept, and then how it evolved with electrification of the trains. The good kind of madness :) I used to go past the crossing near Glenferry Road in Kooyong on the way from school back now and then in the day, but up near Glenferrie station (Swinburne University) that used to also be a crossing until they raised the railway during electrification. There was also one on Whitehorse road in Deepdene where the old outer circle line once ran but sadly no real remnants of it left. I'm still disappointed Melbourne lost the inner and outer circle lines - it's amusing that only now they start talking about the suburban rail loop. I guess there's still the Alamein line as a remnant, but Melbourne suffers quite a bit from the "hub-and-spoke" topology.

AMAZING Mate!! Only in Australia is possible to see level crossings like these, some time ago I was able to see only of Glenhuntly, I didn't know there were more!! I wanted to know the gauges of the train and tram... 1600mm and 1435mm. All the best Aussie from Bs. As. Argentina

Shame there is barely any remaining. It’s really interesting that’s there are crossings that have trains/trams!

Cool video ! Nice complication of the 4 crossings . Can barely hear the barker technics bells at riversdale road , probably because of who ever was mowing or what ever they were doing . They are pretty quiet tho

glen huntly is gone now. as i take this route often, i never really noticed this was something rare and special. i was just always mildly annoyed that the train slowed down quite a bit before passing through glen huntly

The Gardiner crossing was just stupid, I mean, they built the bridge over the freeway. A long time ago, the freeway literally used to have traffic lights at pretty much every main road. It was the south eastern arterial. So, they went and built a road bridge over the freeway when the freeway was finally built in it's current form. When they did this, it left a down and up road that only came down for the rail crossing. It's absolutely absurd they didn't do the entire thing in one go.

Have always wondered too, why railway separation wasn't done on Burke Rd/Gardiner crossing, when it became a proper freeway. Considering the tram tracks had to realigned (again) for the 'real' freeway

These crossings are/were probably among the worst in Melbourne as the trains have to slow to a crawl to get across the tram tracks.

So is the overhead power at the same height for both trams and trains? Is that a standard? Also, about how much of a gap is there for tram power?
@Taitset
@Taitset 2 жыл бұрын
The height varies around both networks as required, for instance it gets lower under bridges and gets higher as it goes over crossings. There is only a tiny insulated gap in the wire on each side of the crossing, the bit over the actual crossing remains live and changes voltage for trams or trains.

The new railway station is due to open in August 2023. Digging of the rail trench commences early in May. So no trams will run for a few weeks, replaced by buses, until the new bridge work in Glenhuntly Road is in place.

selfishly, the kooyong level crossing is helpful for trying to execute a turn onto glenferrie rd out of any of the neighbouring side streets during peak hr, so in this particular scenario i am grateful for it

It's all the same system: the Metric system. There are 10 millimetres in a centimetre, and 100 centimetres in a metre. All the countries you mention use the Metric system except for the US. You might want to have a read here: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metric_system
