Thanks for training me to memorize 3,141 digits of pi! The coolest thing about this technique is that it means I can recall the digits forwards, backwards, and even stop in the middle, eat a pie, and keep going. It's so cool and I hope more people give it a shot! - Sabrina

Came from Sabrina’s pi video. The craziest and somehow I’m surprised, believable thing I’ve heard of recently. It just makes sense that taking on a task like this would forever change how your brain approached things.

Just confirming this for my own understanding, so to do this you will follow the below steps: 1. Assign letters using the dominic system for every number (0-9) 2. Assign a PAO for every number from 00 to 99 3. Break down pi into chunks of 6 digits where the first two are person, next two are action, and the last two are object 4. Then map the PAO for how many ever digits you want to memorize in batches of 6 using the PAO assigned to every 2 digit number in step 2 5. Break your goal into different memory palaces of 50 PAOs each 6. Memorize/Visualise the PAOs in your memory palaces Do let me know if this is a proper understanding of the process. PS - I am super excited to try this memory challenge with a bunch of my friends!

I once memorised 200 digits of PI but I didn't know about PAO back then I think. I used 3 numbers for a word but also last number was a color of the object. I made a scale 0-9 of different colors. So if there was 1415 numbers to remember, I'd do like T R T -> could memorize just as Testosterone Replacement Therapy (e.g. eating pills or smth) and then the "5" would mean for example very light green color of the pills, which in my system was 5. It generally worked good but brain in general isn't good at recalling different colors (like what color is superman cape). And it was hard when I imagined for example a tree but had to assign other color to it (it's usually green so I see it that way). For me it was also difficult to create words and so on. I think assigning first (like in your point 2) is much, much easier. Then you can make a program like the girl which will show you all the words.

I liked this and AiP’s video. I’ve always wanted to work on my memory as well. I remember in secondary (high) school, I was having a lot of problems remembering language as I really struggle with memorising abstract words, sequences and symbols (I still, at 26, haven’t learnt my times tables). My teacher tried to suggest I use the memory palace technique, suggesting I put post it notes around the house, and that way I could memorise the notes and locations in my memory. I remember at the time, thinking this suggestion was ridiculous, but I only now have the words to realise why. I suffer from relatively high levels of aphantasia. I can maybe picture the outline of a square in my head if I struggle but images don’t come naturally. I’ve not looked deeply into it but most memory techniques seem to revolve around visualisation. Have there been any research/studies into effective memory techniques for those who suffer from aphantasia? Do you have any guidance on how to improve your memory (not necessarily to the extent of memorising thousands of digits of pi, knowing the times tables would be nice 😂) without the use of visualisation?

See I always left review part in my college studies, I used to place all the images in my palaces and not review them. Now I got the idea. What kind of human could eat dough and berries with sugar paste in it. (Like how I just place images in my palace and left the main part, the baking or review). Thanks man, for this perspective.

digits of pi cannot be a memory palace, because it's not that memorable, you need to use a familliar place, like your childhood home, place in your game that you play everyday, malls, streets and roads

Hi Nelson, I'm a big fan, and I'm able to easily remember a couple of hundred items in a list using memory palaces. What I'm struggling with is to remember a deck of cards. I'm terrible at assigning real or imaginary people to 52 cards (PAO). Can you recommend a better method?
@JeffTheHokie
@JeffTheHokie 9 ай бұрын
Harry Lorayne based his card pegs on the major system. For number cards (Aces are ones, tens are zeros) The pegword started with the same letter as the suit, and ended with the major-system consonant for it's number. Ace of clubs is "Cat", 2 of clubs is "Can" 3 is comb and so on. Jacks are the name of the suit, Queen and king start with the letter of the suit and rhyme with the words "king" and "queen". You can build your PAO pegs from that. Your action peg doesn't have to link to the person. It can link to the card, and your "person" doesn't have to be a fleshed-out person. It can just be someone or something that can take an action. I use an expansion of the PAO : person-action-adjective (describing the object)-object-place, but you don't have to get that elaborate. I prefer clusters of 5 because of our base-ten number system. Ace of clubs for example: person: Cat (someone I know full name Catherine) action: Cut Adjective: Catty (dressed up like a cat) Object: Cat (the animal) Place: Catbox

@@JeffTheHokie Thank you for the explanation. My problem is that I don't feel I know enough people to fill 52 cards. I've resorted to use the Major system for numbers 0-9 for family members and animals. Cards 10, knight, queen and king are 4 people and 4 animals in hearts and spades that I can remember. The rest are just people and animals the name or species of which begins with the corresponding consonant in the Major system. Still trying to flesh out values for diamonds and clubs. People and animals make for good PAO. My imagination simply fails me when I have to come up with 52 subjects that I can easily remember. I'm not big on sports or movie characters. Perhaps I'll just use 13 chess players, I'm sure I can find those :-)
@JeffTheHokie

@@NMalteC No need to find 13 things to fit into one category- the starting letter is the suit. Jacks are the easiest .It's just the name of the suit. Club (Fred Flintone) Spade (Spayed: all pegs are vet related, spayed as an adjective or verb could also mean neutered or figuratively weakened), Diamond (Neil Diamond or Donald Trump -before he was political he was mostly known for being extremely rich), and Heart (Cupid). Queen - originally started with suit letter and rhymes with queen, but I changed these a little. Clubs: Coquette - for CQ (Betty Boop, flirt, flirty or slutty, Betty Boop as object, and Paris as place). Hearts :"Queen"- it doesn't REALLY start with H, but if you say it out loud you kind of will hear the h sound. Spades: SQ words- (Squid squishes a squeaky squid in a squash). Diamonds: "Dream" (all things Freddy Kruger) Kings : Club: King (K is the same as hard C) Heart: Hang, hank or hanky (Rhymes with "kang"), Spades::Sting sings(to or about) a stinky singer(or stinger) in a sink. Diamonds: Drink (or drunk)

Could you please advise me on how approach preparing to the exams in STEM and at the same time memorize about 900 chinese hieroglyphs? I can afford 35-40 hours a week on studying. I have big gaps in knowledge and choosing between "just try to do this and cut corners" or "try to understand details and get stuck in the mud". Chinese is a second priority, obviously, deadline is 20 of January. For the STEM exams, deadline is 30 of December. I use google docs for my chinese, create associations for the shape, spelling and translation, then link them together. Right now I don't use Memory Palace, I do not quite understand it's application in this case, as I understand, my 3 existing memory palaces (30 places) are not enough for that, I might need to add some. For the STEM exams, I firstly go through theory, then try to paraphrase the meaning, write it down. You will probably advise me to put these paraphrasings into memory palace. Do I need to use different palaces for different subjects and keep track of them for that? I also don't quite understand POA, but I'll figure it out. Any tips?

You know, I have some memory problems and these videos really inspired me to work on that more actively! I work at a public library, so I want to practice memory techniques by memorizing the whole dewey decimal system. Any advice for that one? Specifically, this involves memorizing categories that are assigned to numbers and remembering which numbers go to which categories. And there's like 1000 (including knowing which numbers are unassigned)

Update: Nevermind I got this. I found your periodic table of elements video and that helped. However, the DDS is hierarchical and isn't just a list of elements. Each of the 10 classes has 10 subclasses and each of those also has 10 (and technically it goes further but I'm not going to bother memorizing down into the actual decimals). So I went with a mind palace for each of the classes. And each mind palace is placed in another mind palace. So I have my main mind palace for the main classes. And at each spot in it I have my mind palaces for each of those classes. Each of them is an entire library or building I've been in so that can further be broken down into mini-palaces that are rooms in those buildings. Each building will have 10 sections. And each section will have 10 landmarks. Now all that is left is to make my mnemonic devices and fill my palaces. My main one is already done and I now have the main classes memorized.

Ok, so putting numbers as silly pictures in thought palaces is one thing and we have seen it works. But how do I get my brain to connect a name to a person I just met? I mean the thought palace is right there, and strangely enough if I recognise the person, I can say, ok, that's the person doing this at that place...but the name is gone...
@Danicker
@Danicker 10 ай бұрын
I'm not a memory expert but my advice is firstly to repeat the name back to the person immediately after they tell it to you. This is helpful because it firstly makes sure that you have actually heard the name correctly, and secondly because the act of saying it helps you to remember it. If you find you are still struggling then try to use their name in conversation while you can still remember it. Every time you say their name it will get more ingrained in your memory.
