Love it. We used the 118 elements as an example for lists recently and used pretty much the same idea. The idea of making a note of every fifth 'junction' in a memory palace that you can easily jump to, we ended up calling a 'Hard Junction'. (PS: 59 is fun one to turn into an image isn't it :) )

Incredibly useful, Nelson! I've been wondering how to go about memorizing data sets like that for the long term in a systematic way. Huge thanks for breaking it down into steps and especially the layering technique. You've been inspiring me a lot this year through your videos and I started to train my memory seriously with the help from the current Swedish memory champion. This led me to recently enter the Swedish Memory Championships, which was my first competition. I learned a ton from that experience and now I look forward to the next one.

Hey, wouldn't the association method work well in this scenario? You use the same mindmap and pictures for the names, but instead of person action object for the number you make the picture of the name large and choose some locations on this picture. On these locations you place other pictures for the numbers and such.

@avrilb72
@avrilb72 2 жыл бұрын
I had that thought too. My guess would be a separate memory palace. You would need a separate palace for that as blending all those layers of different info might get too complicated... The story with all the necessary info could get very long and it would take a long time to work through your stories to work out that piece of info. Especially if you're in a competition setting.
@BarKeegan
@BarKeegan Жыл бұрын
Is there a hierarchy to layering and a limit to how far you can stretch the associated story? I know there’s usually a recommended limit of 5 stations per room in a memory palace. Do you have to approach layering similarly so you don’t get lost?

I don't entirely get "parallel storage". I am not sure how you can connect two locations from different palaces. You probably can do that because both palaces are well developed in your memory and you have a lot of practice with both? I am not sure I would be able to keep that connections, like remember that location 25 in memory palace 1 is location 25 in memory palace 2? ... I need to practice that more. I have a lot of stuff that I want to memorize.
@NelsonDellis
@NelsonDellis 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I had mentioned that in a section but cut it to not keep the video from being too long. For the parallel storage idea to work well you need to be quite familiar with both palaces. The ones I used for these are very well travelled so I know them quite well.

Hey John! I’ll give my method, it may not appeal to some but it worked really well for me. 1. Group the elements into groups of 10. 2. Look at all of the atomic symbols for one group. For example, let’s look at elements 41-50: Nb Mo Tc Ru Rh Pd Ag Cd In Sn. 3. Combine these to 1-2 “words.” For this example, I did NbMoTcRuRh PdAgCdInSn (I just pronounce them how I think it would sound). Notice how I grouped them into groups of 5 to make it easier. 4. Associate these “words” with their numbers. For example these are elements 41-50, so you can just associate them with the number 4. I can’t go into more detail without writing a lot more, but this worked for me. As I did this, I learned what element each symbol stands for, so I know elements 41-50 are Niobium Molybdenum Technetium Rubidium Rhodium Paladium Silver Cadmium Indium Tin. Grouping them by 5 where possible allowed me to reasonably quickly find the number I’m looking for.

Hey John, so my teacher taught me this it's very easy. First you have to learn the periodic table , i learn it group wise because properties are almost same for a group . I used mnemonics . So for example group 16 oxygen family has O , S , Se, Te, Po, Lv . So if you know the atomic no of oxygen you know the rest . At no of O is 8 , now if you look in the periodic table there are 8 elements in the '3rd Period ' and S is in 3rd period so just 8 + atomic no of oxygen , you get 16 it's the at. no of S . Similarly there are 18 elements in 4th period and you now know at. No of S is 16 , just add 16+18 you get 34 that's the atomic no Se . Period 5th has 18 elements , just add 18 +34 =52 , that's at no of Te. Period 6th has 32 elements , (why? because 6th period has lanthanoids too) . Just add 32 + at no of Te =84 . That's at no of Po. In this way if you know the at. no of first element of group you can calculate at no of any element . Period 1 has 2 elements , 2nd has 8 3rd has 8 4th has 18 5th has 18 6th had 32( lanthanoids too include) 7th has 32 elements . Hope this helps you....

Hi Himanshu, I think your method assumes that I know what groups and periods are...I do not! Happy to be able to learn them as a list 1, 2, 3, 4 etc with the associated name of the element. I do not really need beyond that. John

Another option is if you have a peg system for numbers. If you have pegs for numbers up to 118, all you would need to do is associate an image for the element to the peg. The hardest part would be coming up with the pegs if you haven’t already

I've learned the names of all up to 118 but still a little bit shaky on symbols, and I didn't learn boiling points and discovery dates or anything. Pretty much just the same as for 10 elements just more locations. I used my old college because it seemed to have that Chemistry association. And just learned one row at a time. Work out how many locations you need for a row, plot a route and then just add the images. I guess I did one new row a day or something like that. Still I probably do need to keep reviewing it or it wont stay in long term.
