This is one of those pieces that you've never heard before, and you'll instantly like it.

Some of this melodic contour sounds strangely 20th century-esque, especially the flat 3rd in the first prelude. I love it! Keep up this great work :))

That's what I thought too! The beginning of the first prelude sounds surprisingly like Gershwin :)

Sharp 2nd* It's a C# which resolves to a D natural.

@@e.hutchence-composer8203 I acknowledge that they are enharmonics and in the score it is written as a C#, but naming the note a flat 3 (which is significantly more common and recognizable in jazz theory via the blues scale) better supports my argument connecting the piece to 20th century music.

@@SpencerCha I understand your point but it's a sharp 2nd. Like the difference between an aug6 chord and a dom7 chord; they are the same but are written differently. I suppose I'm just a bit pedantic like that.

0:14 that's a G minor pentatonic with a raised fourth that we usually heard in folk music (including blues), jazz, rock music, etc.

The first one reminds me of some theme in Gershwin's works: An American in Paris, first of all. In this sense, Mendelssohn seems very actual, and it is strange: one of the most classical composers is indeed so modern

The first one reminds me of the third movement of Prokofiev’s 7th sonata.

I don't really understand why he didn't publish this great pieces during lifetime. Mendelssohn seemed to be a fastidious perfectionist so he was prohibited from evolving his true potential.
