Very Helpful & a lot of good tips. Performed the repair this afternoon on a 05 SLK 350. Shop wanted $1,986 for repair (wanted to replace everything they touched - didn't want to touch the gasket but entire assembly as well). I was able to do for less than $35 (Gasket for $7.50, a quart of oil $10 , a can of PS fluid $11, and 1.5L of coolant concentrate $5) - with your excellent video I saved about $1,950! A Couple of slight modifications. (1) Drained the power steering reservoir down with manual vacuum pump (I suppose one could use a turkey baster as well) . No mess & Got a partial PS fluid refresh out of the process. (2) End up not needing to completely remove power steering reservoir as that horseshoe clip looked to be a pickle. After removing the three screws was able to rotate the reservoir so I could get the lower screws. (3) Removing the upper radiator hose facilitated the process greatly - nice to have out of the way. Was sort of by accident as I was going to drain down the coolant but when I went to turn the plastic draincock at the bottom of the radiator the lower half of the plastic assembly simply fell away into my hand but fortunately the upper half remained sealed. A common issue I see after some research - so I removed the upper hose at the thermostat housing the bleed some coolant off - easy enough & after fighting with the flopping house a bit I removed the hose at the radiator as well and set over to the reservoir (left the reservoir hose attached).

this is amazingly excellent! It explains how Benz dealers can turn a simple $20 job into $2,000 robbery 😂 Did you get to the oil cooler: - oil leaking outside ? - coolant mixing into oil? I begining to understand Benz builds its cranckase pressure relieve system as a high maintenance item that needs attention else extra items appear (dirty throttle body, dirty intake valves, blown gaskets, oil leaks...) - My engineI M276 is a bit different.

Continuing on that I thought c clip wouldn’t allow the thing to flip. But if that is possible that’s just brilliant. It will make change that side of the camshaft sensor so way to change, specially in a slk that has less space than rest of the cars

Very nice vid. Easy to see what's going on - and especially a great tip about venting the oil filter housing to minimise mess and loss of oil! I did this job on my '98 E55. The oil cooler is the other side of the filter housing and coolant comes in to the cooler via hoses and oil ways are sealed with O-rings, it's a lot harder to work with than the later design you were working with, but all the principles are the same

Great job, although I also recommend fully taking off the PS Reservoir. I know many comments ask if the oil cooler can be removed without messing with the PS Reservoir, but in reality, everyone replacing the oil cooler seal should be removing the P Reservoir at the same time and replacing the leaky seal held on by the C clip. It leaks around the same time, just that the o ring seal is not easily inspected due to location. So it should be encouraged to be replaced not discouraged due to its difficulty. Matter of when, not will it...

Amazing channel, great resource! Am I a fool to not do the oil filter housing gasket as well? Looks as if all I have is the cooler leaking. Seapage all around where it meets the ofh. Dripped on the front of ofh as well as top of belt tensioner and top of ac compressor, so seems straight down. Back & top of ofh is clean, just unsure of an area where it meets the engine block if these things fail together

I think the dealer always replaces the cooler with the gasket. A certified Benz tech told me they do warp from getting hot and cold causing the leak. And as you can see the comment above his was leaking through one of the fins. Probably cracked from expanding and contracting. Both parts only about 60-80 bucks on FCP EURO

But, he also said the oil cooler should be replaced too. I have all the parts that are needed, but without a thorough inspection I'm not sure if it's one or the other or both that needs repairing. To remove bolts on oil cooler itself a T30 star bit (male) - for position sensor a Torx E8 socket (female), a curved pick if removing radiator hose (for clip), will need a 74 MM oil wrench adapter for removing oil filter assy to let it drain down. Recommend a vacuum pump or skinny turkey baster to remove excess fluid from PS reservoir and oil filter area. my vehicle was a 05 SLK 350 - assume the tools are the same for yours but not assured. recommend that you dry run on the accessible upper bolts before tearing into it (all five are the same) - same with the position sensor.

Could be this same exact gasket. If you watched the video you could see the oil passages are separated from the coolant passages by only that red rubber gasket.

Not head gasket. You will have water in oil if it were the head gasket.

the real question is WHAT caused the excessive oil pressure to blow up the gasket into coolant system.... bad Crankcase breather ! Do fix both consequence & root cause. Preventive: coolant over-pressure can get in oil, the cap on the expansion tank does need attention too.

Hate to say this but it's faster and cheaper to get your radiator flushed at a trusted shop. If you're gonna do it yourself.. Start by replacing your gasket on the oil cooler. Then you will need to flush the coolant from the radiator and replace it with new coolant. The radiator has a flush port on the driver side of the radiator. Do NOT do this when the coolant is hot. you will need to fill the radiator filler port completely filling the radiator. Then with the engine running and the radiator reserve port open fill it as it goes down. It's a slow process. You may need to flush it several times.

Thanks Keith. Oil cooler leaked on my belt tensioner a ruined it. Fixed now. I have a question if you dont mind. I have a chatter on cold starts on my 2008 272. It lasts a few seconds, longer when colder out. I believe its the cam adjuster/phaser. Left side of motor, behind the intake cam magnet. The chatter goes away car runs great. No codes yet, is this a common problem? Could it be the magnet itself? Thanks. Here is a video. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qceGnquc2Ze5Y2w.html

I think you are right: the soft lock-pins inside the timing gear adjusters are designed to wear out and cause the 2 chain tensioners to make extra noise at start-up 😂
