Its the grande finale for the engine that came to me in the begining of june, all in all it have been in better shape than i would dare hope to. Now fingers crossed that i havent forgotten to tighten any bolts or other misshaps that can accour when you do a engine overhaul.

I was just searching for a timing chain replacement but ended up watching the entire 5 parts of your engine rebuild in a row !! Congratulations by the great video edition and mechanical skills !

well dont stop now! got videos where i swap out the rebuilt engine with an old one, and another where i add a HX40 turbo to the car

Thanks John, i am not att all knowledgeable around the mercedes engines, there are some super pro´s out there. Glad you like the videos anyhow and hope you can widthstand some volvo 240 videos coming out soon even tought they dont got a mercedes engine in them

Nice series of videos! Did quite a few 603/606 "superturbo" builds. But never overhauled an engine. Very informative! Thanks and greetings from good old Germany✌🏻

thanks, i wouldnt "risk" renovating an engine like i did if it wouldnt have had half a million kilometers on it. But this one was a good kandidate. There are still risks that i havent torquied down everything as i should even tought ive testdriven it a 10-20 km. Time will tell. Thanks for commenting.

@@Foffe2000 btw a friend of mine is running a 606 with 770.000km and 597whp without any issues. I think it's cause compression is at sweet spot😂 He only changed main bearings before that build. That's just crazy!

@@ragnarlothbrok835 Yes that sounds pretty amazing. This engine probebly came from a car that where imported (second hand) from germany at some time. But there where signs of a previus timing-chain exchange and fairly high blow-by to the crancase and other signs of wear. So that a 77000km engine where up to the task of +500hp sounds pretty amazing. Maybe a car that been well taken care of.

thanks its very nice of you to say that, but when it come to mercedes engines a low milage and well serviced engine is better than anything someone actually put their hands on. there are no aftermarket parts that is better than the original ones and you are always haunted with the tought "did i torque everything down right". But its very nice of you to say that and i did give the engine a good cleanup at least

Very nice I’m building up an old school super turbo 603 aswell. I’m using a mixture of parts tho and aiming for a lot of horsepower out of the old single cam

Thanks, i am right now trying to fit a ZF 5speed manual gearbox from a bmw onto the same engine. I will upload a video on that in a couple of weeks or so

Coud you make a video where i can get feed line for oil to turbo. I have a 603 with no turbo and bought all i need for turbo conversion. But i dont know where or how to get oil to the turbo. I dont have any special tools. Is there any way i can get oil from the oilfilter house? The engine is in the car. Do i need to take it out?

Yeah those CO2 fire extinguisher are great for lots of stuff, and handy to have nearby if you cause a unintentionall fire to.

Hey John , sorry this video is from 2019 so its way to long time ago for me to remember, but i think i did line up alot of parts on the trunk of the car in one of these videos? You should be able to se the different brands on the part there, and i think the supplyer in 90% of the cases where random ebay-stores.

Hello and thanks for the videos. Good content. I have been watching a bunch of your videos past few days and just subscribed.. I have a 1987 300d w124 with162k miles on the om603 and auto trans. I would like to have manual transmission. Do you know if its possible to switch to manual trans 🤔. And is it all just bolt on parts . No welding. Also how many miles are the injector pre chambers good for just rebuilt The injectors with monarch nozzles and changed the glow plugs. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Robert

i think you can swap the automatic to a manual without a problem, but remember that you need the manual prop-shaft, flywheel, hydraulic clutch-pedal, brake-booster with a extra port for the fluid to the slave-cylinder etc. Theres lots of bits and pieces, so i hope you got a donour car parked nearby. I have never heard of a pre-chamber failure, just that they might benefit from a cleanup and some who have gotten the bigger pumps try to drill out the pre-chambers holes a bit. My guess is that you will be fine without touching those pre-chambers and if you are going to i recomend removing the head and just clean them without dissasembly (you can see how much hazzle it it to remove them in a head-renovation i did 2 years ago somewhere here on my channel) good luck with the trans-swap Robert

Nej mig veterligen finns det inga specifika motorböcker alls på mercedes personbils-motorer, däremot hade jag två olika modeller på "haynes" böcker för W124 och där stod dom moment som behövs vid renoveringen.

Hello from Australia, came across your channel by chance, love your back shed improvisation, I have a question? does the Dieselmeken pump (with the 7.5mm elements) over fuel and make excess smoke without the turbo fitted? I am rebuilding OM602 N/A (in a w201 190D) I have the ACM rods, don't won't to run the turbo until I have bedded the engine in - emission laws are strict here in Aus; I want to to run Dieselmeken pump but don't want excess smoke while running N/A - sorry long winded question. Hey Glenn, Dont mind the the text being long. Its easyer to understand your question that way. The Dieselmeken 7,5mm pump can run up to about 180cc if i remember correctly, Ive ordered mine tuned to 130cc wich i can later on adjust on some set-screws on the side to increase fuel delivery. And i think you are right about not running the engine without the turbo mounted, I did it in the test video you can find in my channel that i released just after this one, but i only testrunned it a few hundred meters around the house. Since i just cleaned out the pistons and the internals i dont want to get it all clogged up again. I cant make any promises but in order to meet your countrys emission laws at the very least i think you need to order the pump with the additional ALDA-system (wich they also sell if you tell them to). If you watch my video when i mount the engine in the car you can see me fiddle with the separate Alda-system there. Its a vacuum-actuated arm, the same as in the turbos with internal wastegate system. Without turbo pressure there is one set-screw on fuel delivery, on the second screw you can adjust the max fuel-delivery on boost. The maximum boost is adjusted on the vacuum-actuater. So make sure to order the pump with the ALDA-system attached, you will get an question on if you want it mounted horisontal or vertical. That you can choose depending on the space available on your car, I chosed the vertical one so that i could run the OFGEAR automatic transmission controller on the car later on. @@glennstocker487 Its the 722 gearboxes i am referring to. There is a guy in Denmark who makes standalone systems so you can run a modern 5speed transmission in any car. If you use this system you preferebly buy the throttle-sensor kit to, and it screws on to the back-end of the injectionpump (you can run the system without it) The Alda need to be mounted vertical to give room for this sensor. I have bought the system and hopefully will make a video on the installation it into the car somewhere in the summer next year.

Glenn asked about the amount of smoke from the Dieselmeken 7,5mm and i said that he should go for the ALDA system that they can fit the pumps with at dieselmeken .. and that i chosed the vertical one to accomadate room for the throttle sensor for the ofgear kit in the future.. if he isnt going with that he can choose the horisontal version if that fits better in hes engine compartment.

Hi Foffe! Excellent job! You are really a reference for this engine overhaul! I couldn't find in these video of and how you exchanged the precombustion chambers. I found a socket on Amazon with 58 teeth wish seems to correspond to my precombustion chambers (OM602). But I don't find a video of such a removal/replacement. I would like to know if after using the 58 teeth socket I will need something else to remove the chambers. Apparently there are 2 types of collar nuts (which are on the top of the precombustion chambers): one model with 2 slots and one model with 58 teeth. Do you know if specific tool is required to pull the chambers after removing the collar nuts please tell me? And if you know, which tool, tell me too please? Hello Armand, i go into dept on that on a engine head overhaul video on my channel i think its called "om603 engine head overhaul" and its not a part of this engine-series of videos. In that video i remove the collar and then use a home made tool to extract the prechamber, Thank your lucky star that you got the newer head with internal splines, i had the old type and ended up welding to get them loose and had to buy six new ones instead. Extracting the prechamber is the same kind of job on both the newer head and this old one.

@@armandh9287 yeah i think thats the only tool avaible to buy, i did make my own tool , i think it was like M30X1 thread. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gqefi5qnxpaugXk.html there you got the tool i used, i combined it as a slide-hammer to extract the last few millimeter.

I have a question, can the chain drop out of the crank gear teeth? Or the pumps teeth? I'm changing head gasket and the chain went loose when I lifted the head out, then when I got to rebuild it the chain wasn't in its original position and I pulled it and it sounded and felt like it had dropped out of teeth and I pulled it back on to them. I'm gonna check the timing anyway but can that happen?

its a little bit to loong time ago for me to remember now, but i rarely put sealant on stuff where there is gaskets so i wouldnt think so.

@@Foffe2000 Thank you for replying. The thing is that the timing chain cover has no gasket. At around 11:41 min you seem to install it with some type of sealant, because there is something on the screwdriver after you use it to help lift the head gasket with it.

@@SomebodyIUseToBe Oh, i looked at the same part and tought since i had 2 bolts in from the get-go when i applyed it , that it would indicate that there was a gasket and i used the bolts to keep it in place. But right now your guess is as good as mine since i dont remember and i am just reviewing my own recording there. The upper part got a seal from the headgasket that pretrude all the way out to this cover, i scraped the skrewdriver along to make sure it would lay down correctly, as i remember it was quite thin and flimsy

Halloj , merparten av momenten har jag tagit från haynes reperationshandbok för W124, den behandlar även dieselmotorerna. Kostnaden för boken är enligt mig blygsam och att ha en vanlig hederlig bok att bläddra i med oljiga fingrar känns mycket bättre än att smeta runt dessa på en touchpanel (padda, telefon etc) Så jag rekommenderar att köpa en sådan bok.

Hej Fredrik, Jag körde viktor reinz packningskit som även innehöll topp-packning. Att det fanns olika "versioner" av topp-packningen kände jag ej till. Trodde samtliga var lika eftersom en dieselmotor vare sig den har turbo eller ej går på väldigt höga kompressionstryck. Det var synd att jag inte kände till detta helt klart. Tack för info tar med mig det till nått framtida motorbygge.

@@Foffe2000 Ja jag har själv knäckt flera 603 'sug' packningar vid laddtryck över 1.5bar. Tills jag satte på riktig stål (mls) från 606.

Ja, jag tror jag pratade om det nånstans i nån av dom där videorna. Och den beskrivningen är utifrån att kammen står i övre dödläge. Men jag tycker du lika gärna kan kolla visuellt på vilka kamlober som pekar rakt ner mot lyftarna, där ska du spänna åt kamaxelöverfallet så nära dessa kamlober som möjligt. Tar du långt ifrån skapar du en onödig hävkraft som kamaxeln måste utstå. Samt att du även drar bultarna växelvis å inte för många varv på varje utan hoppa imellan å dra halv varv.

Yes, i think you can see me pressure-test the injectors in a previus video (part 2) with a rather bad result. I have overhauled injectors before and also got shims and some extra sets of used nozzles since before. But i think ill spring for a new set again rather than experimenting with my old sets. That will hopefully be a separate video maybe for the spring of 2020. Since i work outside and its freezing at night here now (winter is coming) i am not that keen on working on the car now.
