If you heat the head to 100 degr C the valve guides slides out very easy.

Thanks, i did heat it up to about 70C with a 500watt halogen lamp, but theres still along way to get to a 100C. I will give it a go the next time i do a engine head, Thanks Erik

Good video.. thanks for the videos you put out.. How many miles are pre.chambers good for. My 1987 m603 has 163k miles on it. Not sure if they have ever been done. I just rebuilt injectors with monarch nozzles and new glow plugs. Going to replace lifters soon. I wish you had a video showing how to do new lifters. Was going to do timing chain but after checking it I found it to be good and tight. Think vacuum pump will be in near future. I tested it and it pulls close to 20 lbs. Keep the videos coming. Good content.

Hello Robert, i feel like we talked about this before? i havent heard of people replacing the pre-chambers due to them being worn out or so, why do you feel its time to change them? The vacuum-pump is a good idea to change anyhow, even tought it might pump allright, there are two ball-bearings and i think you can see it on maybe "engine overhaul part2" i uploaded here on youtube.. when the bearings are worn the balls inside falls out of the inner/outer-race and drops into the engine.

Hello and thank you for this informative video. I am ready to replace the lifters on my 1987 om603. Is it better to put in the new lifter and bucket or just new lifters. I was thinking the original buckets are burnished to the camshaft and worn together. Is it better to use the old buckets or new ones. Thank you for your time. Robert

I actually dont know whats best, they arent terrible expensive to buy new on ebay? but i dont know the quality on those ones. But i dont think you should be to concerned about the lifters being worned together with the camsahft , they are round and can be rotated into its barrel in the hed so if that would be a problem you would have to think about mounting them the same way clockwise to wich ive never heard of. Lots of talk from me but no good answers for you on that topic.

Hello Foffe Fix, what are the dimensions of the metal gasket to disassemble the valve springs? You really do a good job! Are you a professional mechanic? Thanks in advance

@@Foffe2000 No, in fact I was asking for the dimensions of the knob clamp that presses on your homemade tools, but I want the ratings of your homemade tools for the same price ..... =D You are a hell of a super amateur anyway! Indeed, like any amateur there are missed ..... but congratulations to you, and thank you for your very informative and well edited videos! I have the project to redo the cylinder head gasket, the valve stem seals, a pre-combustion chamber and the distribution on my Mercedes 300 d w 124 from 1993, it has only 500,000 kms! a big thank you from France. Foffe, thank you so much for taking the time to show this rebuild, perfect timing as I am about to start on an engine rebuild/upgrade on my W201 - OM602 N/A and love your part of the word, I was in Iceland 18 months ago just stunning, and 35 yrs ago rode a BMW up to North Cape Norway to watch the midnight sunrise truly amazing, it is a little different to the burnt Australian bush I see about me now, I have a couple of questions? if you have time to answer? 1/are there sealing rings or metal gasket rings under the pre-chambers? 2/ how much metal did you remove while cleaning up the ports for an improved flow ? 3/ The N/A (normally aspirated) OM602 has some differences internally to the turbo version (no turbo OM60x was ever released in Australia due to our being right hand drive and the steering box being in the way for turbo & exhaust packaging, I have the "H" beam rods from ACM with the 26mm piston pins I will machine & fit the piston oil jets, cooling the N/A pistons underneath, the head will be built with sodium cooled exhaust valves the Turbocharger is from Alisport in the UK designed to fit aftermarket on to the 5 Cyl; 2.5Ltr Landrover TD5 Discovery (the VGT works mechanically from boost pressure) the two engines are very similar in their characteristics, the in the W201 transmission is a 5 speed (very rare in a mercedes in Australia) with a 7.8:1 overdrive, I am not looking to build a "Black Smoke" roaring monster, just a spirited pleasant to drive well engineered piece of history, any suggestions would be welcomed. thank you again for taking the time. P.s I also have a OM603 & OM601 waiting for a project.

1/ No, ive seen "elring" selling some metal rings, maybe thats for if you get the head shaved off (or whats its called in english) and you are supposted to schims back the prechambers so they dont pretroud to close to the pistons? Or maybe its something they do at the factory if needed so every head are different, some needed schimsing, some didnt. 2/I did not take off that much, originaly mercedes seems to have smoothen out the inlet ports a little bit, so i just took it a bit further and polished it all both exhaust and intake, but just smoothed it nothing much, since i didnt flowtest and matched the cylinders i may have made more harm than good. also i did cut off all the rough edges around the head, sharpt corners combined with bad castings are typical starting points for cracks in the heads. this goes for cast-iron heads, but i do think its a good practice on aluminium heads to. i didnt get the question at number three, but you seem to know more about theese engines than me so i think you will be alright! thanks for the comment Glenn.

Awesome to see a fellow australian playing with the OM series engines! I have a 300D with the om603.912 engine that i am doing a rebuild and turbo project on. How is your project coming along and did you ever adapt the ACM rods to work on the N/A engines? to my understanding the NA om603.912 engine has oil squirters to cool the pistons but relies on an oilbore through the connecting rods to lubricate the gudgeon pin. whereas the turbo variants the oil squirters lubricate the gudgeon pin and cool the piston. the turbo oil squirters are different in design to the N/A oil squirters. I am also surprised your engine does not have oil squirters. Im hoping that mine does!

@@smallenginedude71 G'day, yes there is a lot of debate around which engines came out with piston cooling jets I have four OM60x (two valve) engines in the family having rebuilt one OM602 N/A - no oil jets, my understanding is as follows all OEM turbo engines had a 28mm piston pin with cavity piston crowned pistons allowing the oil (directed via the jets) to splash around and cool the piston crown then lubricate the piston pin, combined with a heavier constructed con rod. The later N/A OM60x (two valve) engines particularly the EU models came out with EGR system for emission compliance necessitating piston cooling also came with cooled piston crowns via oil jets. the non oil jet cooled (earlier, engines non EGR) engines came with a drilling up the con rod to feed the standard 26mm piston pin verses the turbo 28mm pin without the drilling. All R/H drive vehicles were non turbo so were not fitted with piston cooling jets unless they had EGR system fitted ie; the later models As for the ACM.se rods, these are 26mm piston pin rods made specifically for the N/A pistons these being "H" beam forged are much stronger than the stock N/A rods - so really just insurance/ peace of mind. happy to have a chat to share what I've learned - much reading & research before I even decided to go down this rabbit hole. Cheers Glenn

@@glennstocker487 ah now that makes perfect sense. That has cleared up everything! Thank you very much for that information. I will be sure to further message you if K have anymore questions. I think ACM.se have discontinued those rods as I cannot find the 26mm specific rods

i ultrasonic-cleaned those hydraulic lifters before. There i air-bleed them and make sure its pure engine oil in them (and not ultrasonic-water and dirt). Its often enough to just put the lifter in a bath of oil and just use the back end (the plastig) of a screwdriver and press on the middle of the lifter a few times. A few of them was worn so i should buy new ones to be on the safe side
