As a fellow scientist from the Mayo Clinic and avid viewer or your content, I would strongly recommend asking your local physician about a urine porphyrin test. Lipophilic mercury compounds often hang around in the body giving blood mercury tests a false negative. I've witnessed this personally. Just concerned Cody.. Hope you find this and it sparks your curiousity. Anders

What happens if a person has chronic exposure to elemental mercury. When I was 16 my dad accidentally broke a sphygmomanometer (blood pressure gauge) I collected about 2 ml of the spilled mercury and kept it in a non airtight plastic container, under my bed where I used to store most of my chemistry stuff. I lived in that room for 2 years straight and maybe about six months more. I live in India so the temperature during summer can reach up to 40°C. Should I get tested? I have anxiety and depression and chronic fatigue, these seem to be some of the symptoms of mercury poisoning, I also have very bad balance. I am so scared that I might have mercury poisoning. Should I get tested or am I being paranoid? I was so stupid I thought mercury poisoning could only occur if I ingested it.

It's really annoying how I still see these memes going around facebook about compact fluorescent bulbs, especially the one with the foot that looks like it needs amputating, which the meme claims is due to mercury. And yet the amount of mercury in those bulbs is such a ridiculously small amount that it would even be hard to measure.. There's probably more mercury in a can of Tuna. And yet Cody can dip his whole arm in the stuff without any ill effect.
@CzarYe2 жыл бұрын
yeah, but its mercury nitrate, not metallic mercury. Which is far more deadly and can be breathed or absorbed through the skin. So yes its ridiculous to think that metallic mercury is going to absorb through your skin and kill you, and no it is not such a ridiculously small amount of mercury in lightbulbs, its actually a different more poisonous form of mercury. I am sure you have learned this in the last four years.

having studied mercury poisoning a lot while working in my dad's law firm and learned a lot about how mercury can be stored in tissues at high levels without showing up in the blood (in fact a low blood level can indicate that you aren't detoxing it well and it's being stored insted.) Basically, if you're gonna keep messing with hg I think you should look Into consuming a chelation agent or even just eating a diet high in sulfer (eggs, garlic, onion ect.) as an extra precaution and it's liable to good for you even if the levels aren't elevated.
@pierrechevaliergeol6 жыл бұрын
I'm currently suffering from a disease (an erosive lichen planus) which appeared while I was on a mine site where mercury was intensively used, with infra-normal precautions. African-style, which is even way worse than your habits, Mr Cody. It is not yet well-determined whether my disease was related to mercury exposure or to extreme high stress (middle of Sahara, serious nutritional deficiency (proteins and vitamins), no vehicle, no power, no communication means, etc.). Most likely, it is a combination of all that which caused the sickness. As the only Western guy around, I paid a lot of attention and I didn't mess with the mercury, like the locals do. Only once, while panning gold and I took a bit of water from that pond where the guy was panning mercury from slurry all day long. But I didn't drink that water, I didn't soak my fingers in it, I just panned. So this is not a big exposure at all. But mercury is highly used on that site, and vaporised during the ultimate phase of gold recovery. This is done in the open air, and no one knows what happens with mercury vapour: does it condensate somewhere? Is it blown away by the wind over miles and miles? When I was finally freed and went to a hospital, there was no mercury in my blood analyses. When Hg is its metal form, it is quite harmless; but combined in methyl-mercury, that's a different story... The most sad part of my story is that I cannot drink beer any more, without suffering from the bubbling... So, in a nutshell, given my own experience, I wouldn't encourage anyone to play with mercury, especially in stressful conditions. And blood concentrations don't relate to some human body reactions, such as triggering an auto-immune reaction.

that may have ruined the ring since mercury absorbs into silver and makes it brittle, and mercury is very hard to remove from silver.

The word you need to google is "amalgam" and it is what was used for a century for tooth fillings. No, once amalgamated the mercury is not dangerous as such but once amalgamated you do need an industrial (Cody can show fillings being reverted to silver and mercury at some point I am sure) process to de-amalgamate them (as in, doesn't happen naturally).

@US4Sam6 жыл бұрын
It IS real bad! I read about a case where a mom broke an incandesent light bulb in a room where a child was playing, and didn‘t know that it‘s dangerous. The childs exposition to the mercury steam from that bulb resulted in noticable brain memory damage. Not hugely, but in this case noticably. But due to just one single exposure. Don‘t take my word for it. Or cody‘s. But you might want look into that.
@davidniemi40516 жыл бұрын
Incandescent light bulbs do not contain mercury. Fluorescent and neon bulbs do. Fluorescent tubes contain about 11 mg of mercury. This mercury is in the elemental form which as Cody said is not easily absorbed. A lot of mercury poisoning is due to ingestion of methyl mercury in water which contaminates microorganisms which then migrates up the food chain, bio-accumulating as it moves up to us humans. A breast feeding woman with elevated methyl mercury levels can easily pass it on to her baby in her breast milk. A large proportion of the population has a few grams of mercury in their mouths - mercury amalgam fillings. This mercury is excreted as it is generally not absorbed by the gut. The Mad as a Hatter expression evolved from the original felting process used by hat makers. They use mercury or mercury compounds (I don't know which off hand) that got into their blood, tissues and caused brain damage.

Just out of professional interest, was there anything interesting about the microbiology of your blood? Eg, was anything present?

just tested for heavy metals.

Unless you're actually showing signs of infection, there's no reason to think there'd be any bacteria in your blood.
@antonk.27487 жыл бұрын
Bacteria can be present in the blood before signs of infection. Furthermore, there are not only bacteria, but also viruses.

The dangers of mercury are over exaggerated. It can be dangerous as Cody says, but in its metallic form, it doesn't absorb into the body that easily. It took years of victorian era Hat makers using it every day before they started getting noticeable effects from it, The first emperor of china would swallow a bead of mercury everyday and he lived a pretty typical lengthen life, although he was going crazy and getting extremely ill from it. My point being that it is dangerous, but only if you expose yourself to a lot of it consistently for a long time

I remember when taking a college chemistry class they brought in equipment to suck up spilled mercury and store it under water because it was related that it had a vapor pressure at atmospheric temperatures. I was remembering rolling it around in my hands as a toy and storing it in a Sucrets lozenges tin box when I was a kid and wondering how much I had been exposed to. I am guessing it would have been a tiny fraction of Mr. Reeder's exposure though.

6 micrograms of mercury? do you know how much mercury your body needs? yup that's right 0 micrograms
@animowany1117 жыл бұрын
You do know that pretty much nobody actually has 0 mercury in their blood? There are trace amounts of mercury in a lot of foods like fish, and sometimes plants and meat if the area where the food was grown was mildly contaminated
@IkBenBenG7 жыл бұрын
A huge amount of chemicals, including mercury and even cyanide, occur naturally in small amounts. Our bodies can handle those small amounts fine. It only get dangerous when larger amounts of chemicals get into your body.
@daggawagga7 жыл бұрын
The average person's body absorbs around 0.03 micrograms of uranium daily through food. Think about that and all the trace amounts of the whole periodic table present in your body.
@ignemuton55007 жыл бұрын
well there are things that are 0%, for example you have 0% Roetgenium 274 a highly radioactive Isotop that has a half life of 6.4 milliseconds in your body, there is also 100% chance that everything that has mass has a temperature above 0 Kelvin.

Another great video. Glad you're enthusiastic approach to science hasn't harmed you. Seeing your experiments at your ranch makes me nostalgic. I spent my teen years on a ranch in N. California in very similar surroundings. Spent a lot of time on horse back, herding various cattle and sheep. I studied electronics, built radios, televisions and other electronics in our barn from parts I got from the county land fill! Living remotely will bring out the McGyver in anyone. We never threw anything away. Tin cans, old inner tubes, plastic jugs, rusty pipe, sheet metal, etc., are more useful than one might imagine. My dad brought an entire auto shop to a stop one day when he broke down and was finally willing to pay for a new muffler and tail pipes for his 1930s Chevy pickup. By that point, the entire exhaust system was made of juice and coffee cans held together with hose clamps. There was less than 20% of the original pipes left. The entire muffler was coffee cans and completely hollow! Your videos remind me of those wonderful days. A motorcycle inner tube makes a jim dandy emergency radiator hose in a pinch. Don't be like my dad and forget to replace it after you get back home. Inner tube repairs are temporary. They will only last for TWO YEARS!

Thanks for sharing those blood test results with us! When I was about 10 years old, a friend had a bottle of mercury. We weren't aware of any danger, so for about ten minutes, we poured it into our hands and rolled it around on a table with our fingers. Later in life, I was always worried that I may have incurred some mercury poisoning from that experience but in my case and from your test results, I'm happy to know the risk was actually extremely low!

Glad to hear your test results are okay. A few years ago my life came crashing down around me after eating too much (one can per day) fish (albacore tuna) for too long (six months) and started suffering from (chronic) mercury poisoning. It took almost a year to recover, with some lingering side effects to this day (numbness in my hands and feet) and tinnitus (ringing in my ears).

I'm sure you made an honest mistake but I think you meant intravascular not interest cellular fluid when talking about mercury levels in the blood intracellular fluid would be a measurement of the concentration of mercury in your cell extracellular fluid would be a measurement of mercury between cells and intravascular is in the blood
@xspitefire101x7 жыл бұрын
also I'm using voice to text so typos
@Maplechu7 жыл бұрын
Intercellular, Extracellular, and Interstitial fluids are exchangeable terms.
@xspitefire101x7 жыл бұрын
Lmao, you couldn't be farther from truth. Take a hydration or fluid and electrolyte class and tell your professor that.
@Maplechu7 жыл бұрын
Sorry I didn't mean they were synonyms, my bad. I worded that really badly. What I meant to say was they all refer to fluids outside or between cells.
@xspitefire101x7 жыл бұрын
Yes, I agree with that. But the level of something can be completely different depending on what fluid you're measuring. Take potassium for example, measuring from outside the cell it's relatively low compared to inside the cell and the blood supply has level of potassium that is not the same as the other two levels I stated. Same with all electrolytes otherwise there would be no charge difference and you would die. I don't know how mercury works in the body, all I know is its a neurotoxin so based only off of that limited info and not knowledge I think it can be absorbed by cells, and a cells toxicity level for something is sometimes very different that vascular toxicity levels.
