Thanks for this video. Lovely to see New Brighton signal box. My grandad was a signalman there. He used to cycle each day from his bungalow in Moreton to Leasowe station and then get the train to New Brighton. I got to see inside the box once and to ride in the guard’s compartment of a class 503.

Cheers, glad it brought back memories. Would have loved to have had a ride in guards compartment. Or the cab of a 503. Been lucky enough to have had a couple with the 507s though

Thank God for Train spotters back in the day when we didnt know what they were writing down in their note pads....now we have great videos like this that share all the info. Thank you for putting this together, it was brilliant.

@@Merseywail Its the detail that is needed. When discovering new places, for me anyway, I want to know everything about it. Id heard of New Brighton, being from Lancs myself but have never ventured out to it, Im getting to know our coastal regions now with thanks to people like you who do these well researched vlogs.... So thanks for the walk and talk, its just brilliant....Im also discovering old train spotter vlogs too, the knowledge they have is amazing, back in the day we used to frown/wonder what they were doing on the platforms with their notebooks and flasks 😄 I now see it as valuable for travelling because they are sharing their passion and knowledge.

Thanks for yet another ace video. I don't think I've ever seen NB station b4, despite visiting so often in the 60's and early 70's. We'd always get the ferry to Seacombe/Wallasey and walk, god know why... actually the ferry to NB was a tanner (6d) a fortune in those days, so that's probably why ! NB was a real hive of activity back in the 60's though, loved it, but always knackered by the walk back. Your videos bring back so many nascent memories for me, but in this case not of the railway ! Don't know why but we'd never take the train to The Wirral back in the 60's, always the ferry. Nevertheless a hugely informative and entertaining video and a real bonus after me flippantly commenting yesterday on the Xmas 502's. Thanks Merseywail , I'll be replaying trips in the 60's to NB all night, especially when the ferries were suspended because of weather and wish I'd known about the train.

Thanks. Back in my younger day's we would take the ferry to New Brighton, go to the pier. The indoor fair. Picnic on the beach. Go into the Fort which If i remember had a model railway in one of the rooms plus a children's play area. Walk round the gardens then a train back to Liverpool. After the ferry stopped it was always by train, but our visits got less & less as the place declined
@dufushead
@dufushead Жыл бұрын
@@Merseywail It was great. I'd forgotten about the lido and the indoor fair with the rockets in the middle and if you pulled the stick right back you'd think you would go through the glazed dome and overfly the seafront. There was also a weird sort of ski lift type cable car. In the mid 70's there was a place that was popular for a while with live bands, but it was " last picture show," sort of vibe, deffo end of the pier show and end of an era. It was ace but as you say became what my kids would refer to as "dystopian." Liverpool was a bit like that in the 70's. Loved it though, be great to go back there to see the sea, smoke soot, shite, piss, arbitrary violence, bad sex.....them were the days !

I’ve had a great idea: Why can’t the entire Merseyrail network be converted to overhead when the 777s fully replace the 507/8s? I understand the 777s can run on batteries so you could use batteries in all the tunnels and just fit pantographs on the trains, then Merseyrail could expand to anywhere. I wrote the comment below with regard to future expansion incidentally I’d reopen Bootle to Aintree as a heritage link and run the 502 on it and the retired 507’s and 508’s: I think a second link to Southport for the Northern Line could prove invaluable so Ormskirk to Southport should be reinstated. It could also be used as a relief line in cases of track renewal. For me a Lime Street to Bootle line also makes sense as it would provide a much faster service. This could also make good use of a reopened Bootle to Aintree/ Ormskirk/ Southport/Preston branch line rather than changing and shuttling these services would obviously enhance the existing network. Obviously we are looking at laying extra 3rd rail track but the Bootle branch to Lime Street could be done with relative safety as it’s unlikely to attract trespassers. The Bootle to Aintree branch could be run on battery power. I’m not sure how much of Northern’s Ormskirk to Preston could be re-doubled but the route would require it as services would be likely to run every 15 minutes, this would cause problems for trains passing and extend waiting times at loop line stations. Certainly a fast service from Bootle to Lime Street direct must be a no brainer. The Aintree branch avoids changing and shuttling and running through to Southport and Preston also makes total sense. You could also (theoretically) run a branchline loop from Ormskirk into Kirby (and vice versa) via Skelmersdale which could also be traversed on battery power.

All good ideas but unfortunately we're not in London. Indeed the proposed Merseyrail extension to Skelmersdale has just recently been knocked back. The problem is things like this have no problems getting approval down south but we're up north. All this talk of leveling up is just that talk. The full Merseyrail system was never fully realised & unlikely ever to be, regardless of which party are in power. Indeed it was Labour that pulled the plug on Merseytram. Still we can but dream

507’s 3 car units were replacements for the 2/3 car 502 units on the Northern Line, 508’s were almost identical to 507’s but had 4 cars when designed, these were reduced to 3 cars when they were brought up to Merseyside with the 4th coach remaining in the south and added to various EMU’s to increase capacity. They served initially the Wirral line and very shortly after introduction the Northern line. Both the 507 and 508 class EMU’s are currently being withdrawn and scrapped as the brand new 777 class are introduced. I was born in 1973 in North London and travelled very rarely to se family in Formby during the 1970’s and early 1980’s. I loved the 502’s which I still remember clearly travelling on, I also remember their replacement with the bone shaker 507’s. My Grandma and these trains are the whole reason I have any interest in Merseyrail and I have commented such with great detail in other videos in this series. These trains are like an old childhood friend, even if I’ve only travelled the Wirral from Lime Street to Central and Moorfields to Lime Street. They were a strong part of a magical journey. Thank you Merseyrail. I even remember once my mother taking us on the last leg of the journey by taxi from Lime Street, she asked to go to Exchange Station which had been quite normal up until this time. The taxi driver took us there but she remembered he looked very surprised. When we got their not only was it closed as in no trains, staff or even track. She didn’t know Moorfields had replaced it as the last time we had travelled that had been her route! My brother never fully trusted her directions after that. Of course after that experience was my first experience of Moorfields (which we didn’t know was the replacement, my mother genuinely believed we had come as far as Liverpool and couldn’t get to Formby, as she calmed down she asked a passing person. The taxi driver had just taken his fare and left!) Great memories.

Thanks for the comment & memories. The 502s are also a favourite of mine. So much so I am now secretary of the friends of the 502 group. We are restoring the the preserved 502 unit at Burscough. That taxi driver wasn't typical of them. Most are more than willing to help & would have told her that Exchange had closed and been replaced by Moorfields. New Brighton's decline was very sad to me . It was declining when I was younger but I was to young to notice. Although it's a nicer now, it's a shadow of its former self

It's so interesting seeing the units that the extra 508 coaches were grafted onto! They _almost_ fit the rest of the coaches in the unit, being BREL designs themselves, but they're just different enough to look just slightly silly!
