@@achannelhasnoname5182 The depth sensor, that you would need to turn this into a somewhat usable AR product, was removed some months ago and is no longer present in the final product. What you see here is literally the same as what Quest2 can do, just with a bit of color added. The resolution is still too low to make it useful as a work environment. Lynx R1 can do this for a fraction of the cost and so can the Pico4. Nreal can do that with substantially more PPD and as real AR overlay without pass-through.

Even just three seconds experiencing the really trashy version of this that is currently possible on the Quest 2 will show anyone that this is a very promising use case, and the Quest pro improves on it by making it more comfortable to wear and adding color pass through so that you don’t feel like you’re disconnected from the world around you. But it’s a very long technological journey to get to a point where it gets mass adoption. It’s just too weird looking at this point for normal people to wear it at a coffee shop or something, and the experience isn’t quite polished enough to replace computer monitors even at home. But hey, we used to have 640x480 CRT screens that only displayed shades of green, and look where we are 25 years later.

I think the AR side of this is far more immediately relevant and interesting to people than anything else. I’m not sure I particularly want a VR headset strapped on all day but for now I get why it’s needed. Full brain interfacing tech is the eventual play here for VR, but meantime this tech is quite impressive. Kudos to Zuck and the team for going all out on this and taking risks. They’re aiming to do something ground breaking, they put ‘metaverse’ on the map. They deserve some credit for that.
@evolicious
@evolicious Жыл бұрын
This is XR, not AR/VR. There is no such thing as "full brain interfacing tech", and never will be. The human brain doesn't work like what you saw in the matrix movies and the anime you saw. The human brain actually only has a handful of electrical impulses that can be "emulated" with. Heat, Cold, and Wet, as well as the nervous system for pain (that would be illegal and unethical to use) can be simulated with sent impulses. With input limited to only 3 different impulses in a 1/0 phase. So something like a robotic hand than can move in 6-axis, and open/close the hand. Go lookup neuralink and Valve's BCI tech who are both very much invested in neurology and using these inputs and outputs. We'll never be able to do the things you saw in the movie or the anime. But we do have presence in modern VR, and that's all that counts. FYI, facebook didn't put "metaverse" on the map when they don't even have a metaverse or know what a metaverse is. VRChat and Robot are the only current real metaverses. Second-life that went offline years ago was one of the first. Also, this isn't Zuck or his team's technology, this is microsoft HL team who did all the heavily lifting hardware and software development for the Quest Pro. Before that was Brandon Iribe and Oculus who built the Quest system in 2018. They all left Facebook when the Quest 1 was launched. No one wants to work for Facebook.

@@evolicious Nreal field of view problem isn’t the form factor, as a matter of fact the sun shade like form factor on the Nreal isn’t being utilized,if you look at the Nreal you would notice that there’s a smaller transparent glasses under the sun glasses in the front,that small glass is the AR tech. Yes I believe in the distant future AR glasses in the size of sunglasses can have very large field of view. Regular sunglasses have a large field of view so there should be no limitations of making a AR glass in the future with the same FOV as a sunglass. If the money keeps pouring in I’ll say the next 12-13 years we’ll see something like the science fiction. I did tried the Meta quest pro at Best Buy and the AR FOV was large and immersive, it’s early days and I did saw the potential and I really believe that one day the tech will shrink and become even cooler. Like I’ve been saying for years I think VR need light field technology tho for eye comfort and mass adoption, I won’t pick up VR till we see something like that. That's not how VR works. Your eyes work exactly how they work irl, in the HMD. There is light bending depth being used to simulate the virtual world.

This is tecnically AR and yes its already very useful in apps like Google maps. With this hardware the possibilities for developement are huge. I hope one day we can have this in glasses-like form factor.

This is XR, not AR. Also, XR workflow has been around for years with the hololense1/2, varjo XR3, vive pro eye, and more. It's a gimmick no one likes. Meta is out of touch and trying to create a BS device that will jumpstart their order fulfillments of eye and facial tracking metadata to advertisers and the like.

@@user-fg1nt9vi7c if the Vision Pro is successful it will drive other VR companies to do the same, the Quest 4 might not have controllers in the box, might be impossible to self repair, might go up massively in price, might try to lock you into the Meta eco system All because they saw that people still bought a massively overpriced headset that did those things It happened to phones, it's very possible it'll happen to VR too And there is plenty on the market like it, the Quest 3 does everything it does except eye tracking, the Vision Pro however doesn't do half the things the Quest 3 does and it's immensely more expensive

@@marcrodet4900 First of all, "any of these", second I own a HTC vive so know how VR started, and the Quest 3 so know where it is at. While you are correct that I haven't used the vision pro (just like you or anybody who isn't a youtuber) I know that only the display and pass through cameras being better (still not perfect) will not change my viewpoint in calling the vision pro overpriced garbage. It's still not lifelike if it was I would say the price is justified. There are way better PC VRs for that price and you can buy haptic feedback and full body tracking with that.

@@trevorallen7554 Apple is aiming for that, and NReal already released theirs. The problem is there is still no actual viable use for AR other than automotive HUD and some cool 3d models to show clients. It's a gimmick for now and the market might take another 10 years to adopt it better. Still need mobile processing power for AR to get better, as well as micro-displays and battery technology. Metrics have shown that productivity suffers when using XR. Which is why companies that were using XR for workflow, no longer do.
