My father used to listen to this when I was a child :) I'm really impressed to see an American talking about it, considering that Graziani was a kind of genius but sadly he's almost forgotten by now. A little mistake in the translations, redveard is translate litterally but is a Name, is "Barbarossa", i guess "Barbarossa" was the friend that togheter with him fall in love vhith the painter girl. They haved this strange relations with one girl for two boys but now is ended.
