@@mattmartin3629 I feel like you had a very similar progression as I did with this album with respect to age and having the album grow on me more and more over the years. I can't say I was ever necessarily disappointed with Load and ReLoad. I just sort of ignored them for the most part, and continued listening to the Metallica music that I liked best.

The mother of james hetsfield died of cancer when they were writting the album, she was scientist christian so she refuse all medical treatment because of her faith, even with james tentative to make her accept. This is why the clip of this song is very religious themed.

I love the song, thanks for reviewing it, however I wish you did the studio official version, be it the video or a lyric one. The Symphony in this version is just so..... unnecessary and distorts the natural rhythm of the song. It played heavy on the radio when Load came out back in the day.
@obligatoryhandle
@obligatoryhandle 5 жыл бұрын
The symphony overpowers the main guitar riff, which is my favorite of the post-thrash period and Vin liked right away too. There are cool studio effects on it that make it sound like a Chris Issak riff and you just can't hear it here.

This was the first single off the Load album and also the first album since the black album (5 year gap). Metallica got a lot of hate for this album cuz of the drastic change in their sound and image. I was 16 when this album came out and all my peers in hi school hated it. It threw me off guard too but after numerous listens it kinda grew on me. It’s not my favorite album but I respect them for having the balls to do something no one expected. If you’re gonna check out more tracks from the Load era, listen to The Outlaw Torn. IMO the best song off the album 🤘🏼

They won't do sepultura. I tried forever to get them to. They refuse to do it. The only way you're going to get sepultura is if u pay them top dollar for it. It's funny because vin said he likes to discover new bands, but won't give old school sepultura the time of day. But I won't hold it against him. They're all about the money now. So whoever is donating the most they will react to it. That's the downfall of when a cool channel becomes big. All the comments and suggestions just become white noise. They don't even read it

James Hetfield wrote this song about his mother who died from cancer. He was struggling with his mother's death and was looking for a way to cope with his loss and deal with the pain. Hi Vin and Sori ! I love your videos, and your thoughtfulness and honesty regarding the music. Sori, I just wanted to say that for many years I thought the meaning of "It grips you, so hold me!" was the same as you initially thought. I always thought he was singing "It grips you" from a third person perspective, like referring to his pain and anguish as a sort of infestation that consumes many people (you). I doubt I am making any sense right now, so I'll leave it at that. I know this video is old, but keep up the good work!

Ah, Metallica's short-lived foray into the realm of goth, or at least, their interpretation of it. Should have watched the official video; it is hilarious (edit after rewatching video: it is also awesomely artistic and fitting to the song; the hilarity, to me, probably comes from the fact that it's Metallica with short hair and being melodramatic lol). Honestly I wish that I hadn’t watched this reaction video. When you started talking about losing your mother I completely lost it. My mother died a little over 2 years ago and this brought all the emotions right back to me. I didn’t handle it very well as I tried to kill myself. Now after lots of therapy I better equipped to handle my depression. But it still hurts me to this day and I don’t think that will ever go away

Love your product. Your chemistry and energy yall. Dont ever change. I may disagree on your political ideas but you are never bereft of common sense and intelligence. I have learned from yall. Esp that Sori likes your chair....

Surprised you hadn’t heard this song before....Load and Reload are generally hated but they do have a few stand out moments and this is certainly one of them. I saw them live at Slane Castle in Ireland a few weeks back and they played memory remains which is a song I never really liked but live it was incredible. Would love to see your reaction to that song if you haven’t already done it.....especially “that” vocal lol

That is a great version of the song. The Load and Reload albums have quite a few great songs.

Anyone with some kind of deep pain can relate to this song for sure. But if my memory hasn't failed me yet , which it most likely has , then i think this song is about/based on/inspired by , his mom dying of cancer. I could be wrong.
