Lyrically speaking, Load is probably their crowing achievement. James really begins to let it out. It's a great album. 'Bleeding Me' is a standout track but so is the next track, King Nothing'

Until it sleeps was the only song recorded as duet with both Hetfield and Newsted singing the heavy versus and certain parts of the chorus together. That's what makes this song truly shine. Newsted was the greatest backup singer Metallica ever had.
@DrWickermoon
@DrWickermoon 6 ай бұрын
If I remember correctly, Until it Sleeps deals specifically with James' mom's cancer, hence the "So tell me why you've chosen me. Don't want your grip, don't want your greed[...]", also the "I'll tear me open, make you gone. No longer will you hurt anyone." is a metaphor for removing cancer cells so nobody will be hurt by losing a loved one to cancer and James' anger at his mom, for not doing that ("And the hate still shapes me").
@blackenedtrooper
@blackenedtrooper 5 ай бұрын
A lot of people claim that, but it actually doesn't seem to have been James' main intent. In an interview, he mentioned he was glad people interpret his songs in different ways that resonate with them, but seemed kinda baffled when hearing about the cancer theory
@Saiyan585
@Saiyan585 6 күн бұрын
@blackenedtrooper Cite the interview because it's been my understanding that the song is about cancer, and it's been that way since the late 90's.

I was 16 when this album came out. My younger inner metal head was expecting another Black Album or Master of Puppets. I was anticipating some fast or heavy riffs, since Metallica’s music up until that point, was driven by guitar riffs. I remember seeing the video on MTV the very first time and could not believe what I was hearing and watching. No big guitar riff, James’s voice had drastically changed, they all cut their hair and the over all sound was completely different. I was shocked and confused. I’m 43 now, have been playing guitar about 25 years and write my own music and now I understand why they did this. No musician likes repeating themselves and evolving is much needed. IMO, at the time Metallica wanted to prove that they could do more then play fast or write heavy riffs. This was their experimental peak and they had to get this outa their system. Is Load my favorite album? No, but I respect it. ‘The Outlaw Torn’ is a masterpiece though. I’ll always respect Metallica cuz they have the balls to take chances. A lot of their peers are afraid cuz they don’t wanna alienate the fans or they’re afraid of being called sellouts. Metallica doesn’t give a shit and for that, I tip my hat to them.

James' father died during the making of this album as well Lilly. James Hetfield's father also died of cancer as well. You can definitely feel the emotional pain that James was going through because of his father's death starting with the last song, "The House Jack Built". His relationship with his father wasn't the same even though James ended up buying his father a house, and they both went hunting together. James' father also made an appearance in the documentary "A Year and a half in the life of Metallica" which covers the making of The Black Album. James even asked his father why his father thought that James' mother died, and his father danced around the question and didn't give James an answer. James is still a religious person, but he doesn't follow the religious beliefs of the Christian Science religion anymore.

And the lyrics make more and more sense to me now after losing my dad to bowel cancer on September 12 2023 at the age of 67. That's my take on it, I've heard he wrote it about cancer but I'm really not sure, music is art and always up for interpretation by everyone, that's what makes it so great. This isn't my FAVORITE on the album, but it's probably top 3-5 for me. The Outlaw Torn and Bleeding Me are tied for #1. Like many songs on this album, the music isn't necessarily heavy like classic thrash metal, but it's lyrically and emotionally heavy. I remember liking this song when I heard it for the first time (on S&M) but I only understood about half the words. Over time, I started understand more, and the song started to hit different. It's kinda funny that Load, Reload, and St. Anger are their least popular albums, generally shunned by their thrash-only fans, but they have the deepest and most relatable lyrics. So these albums still have a following, but that following is a bit different than their other albums. I actually love all Metallica, but Kill em All is probably my least favorite, with Load, Ride, and Justice being my top 3.

You got it right with this being about the torment swirling around in James mind due to his upbringing. Remember too that the other guys in the band have their own issues. Kirk made a sorta sad statement in an interview, basically that he and James aren't very similar but always came together when the subject or concept went to a messed up place in their lives. Imagine only connecting on terrible subjects and being friends/bandmates for this long! Truly one of the most amazing bands of all time. I was in high school when these albums came out and I felt the door had been opened up and I was seeing the actual people for once. It led me into my first band, leading to a 15 year music journey! I'm creeping up on 44 and just bought a guitar and amp the other day to see if there's still any mileage in these hands lol!
