@Mary loved by jesus dude... yes it is. it can be interpreted in many ways yes. but he wrote it specifically about the cancer that took his mom, maybe his dad, but i only know about his mom. the lines that make it specifically about cancer is "it stains you", "there's some things inside without a cure", "no more can you hurt anyone", "it grips you", and many more. look it up

The Killer Bunny thing is just whoever created the lyric video. The song itself is about James Hetfield's Mom's cancer battle. Effectively he's telling it from the perspective of the cancer and his mother . Edit - the lines about 'wash me, until I'm clean' is referring to chemotherapy and radiation therapy.
@mfree80286

Except James's mother died because she refused any treatment, there was no chemo, no radiation. There wasn't even an aspirin.

The lines about "wash me til I'm clean" refer to his mother's Christian Science beliefs that God can "wash you clean" of all illness, and that doctors are not needed, and, in fact, caused and worsened illness by planting the ideas of it into the minds of their patients.

Both of James’ parents died of cancer. James is speaking about cancer “it grips so (so hold me), it stains you (sold hold me), it HATES you (so hold me), it holds you, holds you, HOLDS YOU....Until it Sleeps”. He then talks directly to the cancer...”I’ll tear me open, make you gone.....no more can you hurt anyone....and the fear still shakes me, so wash me...til I’m clean (meaning cured)”. “Until It Sleeps” is a direct address to how fcuked up cancer is. “So hold me...until it Sleeps”....almost meaning “if it chooses to spare me/if I should survive it”. Sobering song!

The beauty of this song is that you can just insert your own foil as the it and it works... I think this about the cancer fold James' mom did and about his own inner demons. Drinking etc. But it is pretty much the same for whatever your poison is. It is very relatable and that is the greatness of James as a song writer.

As someone else said in the comments section it is about James Hetfield's mother's battle with cancer and I agree that it is probably sung from her point of view. "Sleep" is no doubly used to express "remission" of the cancer and "it" is the cancer itself. One of the lines in the song could be thought of in this way: "Hold me, until the cancer sleeps."

ONE OF THE DEEPEST METALLICA SONGS EVER, AND FUNNY FACTS ARE: "UNTIL IT SLEEPS" and "MAMA SAID" are talking about the James Hetfield's mother who suffered from the cancer, and then James had to let his heart go away from her suffering, and so his mother finally died, because of that cancer, before James formed his band (almost the same thing happened to U2's leader - Bono, 'cause his parents died just before he formed his ICONIC ROCK/POST-PUNK BAND OF ALL TIME; althought U2 have got ALSO some songs that are talking about Bono's hard life after his mother suddenly passed away - these songs are: "I WILL FOLLOW" (1980), "TOMORROW" [and "OCTOBER"] (1981), "LEMON" (1993), "MOFO" (1997), "IRIS (HOLD ME CLOSE)" [and, also, "SONG FOR SOMEONE"] (2013/2014), and "13 (THERE IS A LIGHT)" (2017)!!!!!!!!!!!).

Great song, but I have a request or a dozen. I'm a big fan of Gary Allan. His life has been rough, and his music speaks to me very much. He has some kinda dark songs, but he's also transitioned to songs that are more hopeful. His wife killed herself because she couldn't deal with intense migraines and the depression that spiraled out of being in pain all the time. So I would like to see your reaction to "Best I Ever Had", "Life Ain't Always Beautiful", "Every Storm (Runs Out Of Rain)", "It Ain't The Whiskey", "No Regrets", "Watching Airplanes", and "Hangover Tonight". I think you'll like his voice, the music is pretty awesome, and the lyrics are really meaningful. Not many people have reacted to Gary Allan's videos, but when they have, they really liked them. One guy that analyzes the music and how it mimics the tone and story of the songs says it is an 9 out of 10, compared to other stuff he heard. Another said the message of the song he heard was uplifting and helpful. I would like to see your take on it, oh so crazy one! Would you think Gary Allan is an under-rated artist, an inspirational artist, or a run of the mill artist that is appealing to some and not so much to others?

I read an interview years ago with James Hetfield wherein he stated that he wrote this song about the experience of watching one (or both?) of his parents die of cancer. It's been a while since I read the interview, so I might be misremembering some parts of it, but I recall that he said that his parents were strict Christians who refused any sort of medical intervention and, instead, relied solely on prayer and other religious rituals to "heal". I don't think that James ever bought into the religion to the extent that his parents did so I suspect that he felt helpless and frustrated while watching his parents die. I also suspect that much of the wording of the lyrics was chosen to highlight the religious spin that his parents put on it. You might be on to something with your comment about demonic possession as Jame's parents might have thought of the cancer as something that they needed to be "cleansed" of.

They looked different, they sounded different and they changed their songwriting structure altogether. People were already unhappy with them after the Black album and when this came out, it took a long time for the hardcore fans to embrace them again. Actually it was his father that was dying at this time, around the Load era. He went off on a camping trip in the snow on his own and wrote a lot of stuff down because of it. It was also around the time he gave up drinking for a year and saw a therapist for his anger issues (Bleeding Me is a song that directly relates to that). So yes, this song is a culmination of many things not just about his mom dying.

This is the last good song by Metallica until now, when it was released, we thought that Metallica is back to its roots after the disappointment with the Black Album. But it was just a hopeless thought, once the Load album was released, we held a mourning service on old Metallica.

Top 5? From the Meh-tallica years? If they played this at a concert, I would boo and half of the audience would take a bathroom break.
